Loving the growth of golf right now, Loving the influx of people from all backgrounds but...

I'm sure this is because I'm old, but I am not particularly fond of "growing the game."  Harder to get tee times, longer rounds, morons blasting balls all over. I'm thinking about starting a "shrink the game" movement. Encourage people to play tennis or go hiking.

Sometimes I feel absolutely crazy and like I'm the only person alive who doesn't care about slow play. Give me more bang for my buck. If I'm spending my hard earned money to play golf, I'd rather take my time and enjoy it than blow through it and be done before I know it.

You do realise your actions have consequences on others? Your partners have to play quicker to keep pace with your slow poking, and youre holding the rest of the course up.

Slow play is selfish, since everyone else has to make adjustments to accomodate you

I'm one of those people for whom early is on time, and on time is late. My normal course doesn't have a range, but I still like to roll in 30 minutes before the tee time to relax, roll some putts, stretch a bit, etc.

One member of our normal group lives literally about around the corner from the course and he can barely make it on time. I'd like to cut him a little slack because he's got a 9 month old baby at home, so I'm sure getting out the door can be an issue. I've been there. But instead I usually just tell him our tee time is 10 minutes earlier than it is.

I have a buddy like that. He lived literally less than 2 minutes from the course, and I don’t recall him ever pulling into the parking lot more than 5 minutes before our tee time. I eventually got to where I did the same and told him 10 minutes earlier, or just loaded up the cart and headed to the first tee and made him walk over. Im like you, if I’m less than 30 minutes early to the course, I’m late and feel rushed. My wife doesn’t understand it because she doesn’t have a bad back and doesn’t warm up. The struggle is real.

I'm lucky that I don't have a bad back, thankfully. For me it's just mental. I hate being rushed. I hate thinking I have to rush to be on time. It's a poor way to start a round of golf for me.

It’s a poor way to do anything in life. I’m perpetually early by nature. My dad taught me that growing up. It’s better to be 20 minutes early than 2 minutes late to anything. I’ll leave an hour early for dinner reservations 30 minutes away. Never know what Houston traffic will look like, and a bonus if I get there early I’ll hit the bar and pregame it a bit.

You should talk to my wife. We were literally the ones who’d be at the airport 3 hours before the flight because all these potential weird sh*t that could happen on the road.

Oh that’s me for sure. If I’m not parked and walking in at least 2-2.5 hours early, I’m bugged out. I’ll happily get there early and belly up to a bar for a bit so I can relax before I fly. As much time as I spend in the air, I hate every second of it.

If I'm traveling for pleasure... I'm early to the airport. If I'm traveling for business, I'm *much* more comfortable cutting it close lol...

I was taught if you’re only 5 minutes early you’re late. It’s served me well in life.

I've seen a starter get fired for that type of thing. Game of honor huh UFB

You've got a smidgen of a point, but...I get the sense you aren't hanging out at the local muni a great deal. It's been like this since I was a junior and in every place I've ever lived.

I've always been given the impression that I am the one doing them the favor. When paying customers can't be bothered to show up for a tee time, they always seem happy to throw me out to flesh out a foursome.

I've never seen a starter reprimanded. In fact, I've had course supers and head pros telling the starters to send me out. I'm like the Jeff Knox of muni golf, apparently.

I don't play slow. I'm saying I don't mind when play is slow. If I'm left to my own devices with an open course ahead of me and I'm buy myself, I'll walk 18 in under 3 hours. But if I'm playing a weekend round with an absolutely stacked tee sheet and I have to wait on shots and I spend 5.5 hours on the course? I'm not upset.

Get to know the starters. Walk and carry. Be cool.

Before you know it, they'll be telling you to put the receipt back in your pocket and save it for next time. Been doing it since I was 11 years old.

Do you rob convenience stores on the way home?

A smidgen ? Theft of services it's called and the employees are ahats for doing it.  Guess it's ok because it's a Muni lol.

Those who live in glass houses...

The level of indignancy here is a bit over the top. The comparisons are are not equivalent.

I'm not stealing anything. I'm helping the course out (apparently), and they are helping me out.

Perhaps if you were a little bit more human and understanding, you'd get some free golf too.

If they tell u to save ur receipt for next time and use it then and u don't pay for golf THATS STEALING. Ask the course owners their opinion. And the employees are stealing from the course also. Whats so hard to understand.

Lay off guys. If he is told it is ok by an employee, he is not stealing. The employee may be, but he is not.

No. You lay off. Who the hell are you?

Yes, he is being dishonest and lacks character.

If your buddy winks and doesn't ring up a few clubs and balls at the register of a golf store, you're OK with that?

It's unscrupulous and deceitful. I wouldn't hire him to cut my lawn.

Who am I? I’m a guy who isn’t going to turn down a free round of golf at a course I play at all the time if it’s offered by an employee at the course. And you’re a damn liar if you say you would.
