Rickie Playing Black Irons?

Is Rickie back to playing a Black Set of irons this week? Looks like it from the telecast and also an Instagram post from his caddy. Is he still in the RF Blades but in Black? Anyone got any pics? Rickie has already been thru numerous irons this year.

Yeah, looked like the Forged CBs with lead tape in the cavity. Still has the MMTs.

Yes looks like Black CB’s. I was planning on ordering a set of the new MB’s cause the shape looks epic but if even Rickie can’t hit them hmmmmm

Definitely a set of black CB’s with some lead tape on them.

I had doubts from the beginning, that he would actually hit the zero offset blades better than something else.  Regardless of how much he liked the look of them

When a striker like Rory makes a comment something along the line of he wouldn't want to hit the 4 iron in that set, you know that is one unforgiving club.  Rick Shiels has an interesting video on YouTube where he tested them.

Seems Rickie's iron-related stats weren't all that good with them.  He's been fooling with something or other of similar design for some time now.  Makes one wonder what exactly he's trying to prove. 

Use what it takes to be successful.  It's a good lesson for all of us.

I have the RF proto's and the hitting area is the same as Cobra's last MB which I played prior. I believe the sole is also the same so not sure why he would not have confidence in the new sticks. I loved the King forged MB's. I felt even though they were small they were easy to hit and get good results. Sole was perfect for my swing. The RF proto's just have about the best shape I have seen in an iron. I think he is just really struggling with swing changes and it can be easier to switch clubs and maybe feel like he has more room for error. Plus his putting is not even close to what it once was.

This. I would blame the irons less and more on his own issues currently. He's searching for something and it seems to be missing with all the clubs

Shiels wouldn't exactly be the litmus test for these types of irons to be fair, and I don't think Rickie is trying to prove anything as much as he is just looking for what makes him comfortable.

Yep. I’ve held them.  100 % not smaller than blueprint or Miura small blade. Not at all “ unhitable “ he’s down a rabbit hole.  Period. It’s not the irons.

That iron is the club he played out of the rough on 18 (2nd shot) it appeared to be the Amp Cell Pro long iron, he did also have the black Mb or Cb’s in the other irons.

He needs to figure out his game again. He was really dialed in a couple years ago. Top 5 in the majors and shifted into nothing now. Go back to playing titliest mbs

He’s already at Taylormade for Ball and Gloves.... who’s to say he doesn’t change Manufactures. It’s the only think he hasn’t tried yet.

He won't get the same deal from anyone else, not with his recent issues. I'd be interested to hear on his extension though as I can imagine cobra is more interested in keeping bryson right now

If Taylormade get acquired/ bought by someone who wants to sink more money into the tour stable I could see a play for Rickie being made. 
 

Rickie moves goods and it wouldn’t matter where he is. Taylormade is big into content creation right now and Rickie would fit in perfectly.

Who's to say he doesn't switch balls at some point? I haven't looked at the timeframes, but it feels like hasn't been very good since switching to the TP5x.

Cobra can't catch a break, they collaborate with Rickie on an iron set than he is constantly switching back and forth from.Then Bryson is winning with a 5 year old model, and an iron set that is un marketable.

I think the ball might have contributed to the problem somewhat.....just not fit for him. He should go back to Titleist ball once the contract ends and see if that improves his game.

Kinda similar with Taylormade a bit with the SIM2. Woods is out of commission so no Tiger bump on the product, DJ and Morikawa both winning with the older model, Rory struggling etc etc.

Hate to say it, but an iron that even gives Rory the creeps when looking down on it, might not be the best club for someone struggling. Just sayin.

As others have mentioned, the ball change has spiraled out of control. He immediately changed iron shafts after the ball change, didn’t work, and then started chasing his (imaginary) swing issues. His iron play is putting too much pressure on his short game and now that’s gone. It’s a mental death spiral. I root for BDR but his mental game has never been his strength.

This is a fair point that I had not considered. Mostly because it was so new and I feel like Rickie struggles have been going on a bit before the ball switch....

He needs to find something that gives him a psychological shot in the arm... iron switch, new puma underoos, whatever it takes...
