Suggestions on forged CB heads for son.

Tugu

Recommended Posts

So my boys is now 6'4 at 16 yrs of age. He just cracked the face of his G410. Now his 716 Ap-1 forged (Korea edition) is really dying a rapid death too. Looking to goto something like a one piece forged CB. No need for latest and greatest. Unless I'm wrong, forged players CBs don't change much in tech.

All suggestions are very welcome. Only thing is price is sensitive and I'd like to buy brand new. Ideally heads only because we really need to do some testing re shafts.

Thank you in advance.

Don't think you could go wrong with anything by Mizuno.  If you're not totally opposed to used, you should be able to pick up fairly nice older set for a decent price.  When my son was his age I picked him up a nice used set of MP32's and he played well with them.  In fact he just recently switched to something a little newer this last year.

From a cost, time, and fit perspective, you're probably much better off just getting fit for what he should be playing, instead of buying heads and shafts separately

If you wanted to "self fit" I would look at the Golf works heads and start there. Get a basic shaft to start and go to town.

Haywood 1 with Hzrdus Black RDX 70

Haywood 3W PXG 0211 5W

Haywood 18* driving iron

Haywood MB irons 3-PW

Mitsubishi Kuro Kage 80g iron shafts

Haywood 52/10 and 56/12 wedges

Haywood mid mallet putter

I’d agree with the logic here. But. Finding a place to fit irons outside on grass is really hard to do.  Inside on a mat with an iron is not a fitting.  Just no way to say it is. It’s like testing a race car in a simulator.  Ok.  Now what ?  Is the only conclusion.  It won’t mimic real iron activity.  For that reason I can only agree with self fitting through trail and error ( which is exactly what any fitting is ) or traveling to a place that will fit you on grass outside.

You're not going to find anything new without the shafts.  IF you are dead set against going for an actual fitting then you are limited to either.....

1. Buying components

2. Buying something and guessing and the re-shafting.

The second can get pretty pricey since new one piece forged are normally the most expensive iron model from every manufacturer.  So your best bet is probably discount dans to get a decent price.

Otherwise shop the classifieds here, you probably won't find new, and you may or may not find heads only, but you could find some decent prices.  Right now used clubs are pretty scarce in good condition, sometimes you can find a deal on Callaway preowned, globalgolf, 2nd swing, or rockbottom.

The Sub 70 639 irons might be what your looking for. They are a very good club and you won’t break the bank. Just contact them and they will work with your son and get a proper fit for him. There is a pretty long Sub 70 thread you should read through if you’re reluctant to work with a small club company.

Being he is quite tall, getting fitted would be the best way to go.

@Tugu, the exception would be if you do a lot of your own clubsmithing, and can be systematic in approaching the build.

Maltby TE Forged are the best value for money of any forged CB iron heads available. Excellent quality, good feel, small offset, traditional lofts.

Also worth considering are Wishon 565MC, if you can find a fitter near you.

At 6'4" the length and weight of the iron shafts are important to get right, so a fitting is a good idea. Take look at the Ping website and the color code chart under the Fitting tab to get a starting point based on his height and wrist to floor measurement.

Heads only and cost sensitive probably means you should look at Golfworks. Their forged heads are pretty good.

My next recommendation would be Wishon. They are available through Diamond Golf.  Might be a little more expensive but I actually prefer the head designs.

Sorry I am a current fan boy,

https://www.golfsub70.com/sub-70-639-cb-forged-black-irons.html

I have been playing with Sub 70 combos since October of last year.

But play CB' s 7irons to 4irons.  These are really forgiving.

PW - 4iron - $693 with your favorite default shafts.... Thats unheard of!!!!

How do you do meaningful shaft testing without the actual head?

What’s the magic of one piece forged CBs?

I’d get him fit by someone qualified. You can get pretty good ideas and some baselines.

Then explore where that leads with new or used clubs.

The idea is to choose a head and then try a few different shafts.

Re forged one piece, my boy is getting some crazy flights out of strong lofted, multi piece constructions.

Re fitting, it just costs too much.

He kinda leaning towards Titlest 718 CB and they are being offered somewhat cheap comparatively.

Thank you. Will definitely show him. He is right now leaning towards some Titleist 718 CB's that dont cost too much more than that.

Fittings are not expensive in general, but maybe you don't have ready access to facilities?

Cast clubs or "multi piece" clubs in and of themselves don't all lend themselves to "crazy" ball flights, sounds like you may be talking yourself into something there.

He should definitely play whatever he wants, but buying shafts and apparently installing them into a head to test them, guesses on the used market, are in the long run going to cost a lot more than some focused advice, IMO.

I’ve bought three different Wilson staff sets and my Srixons heads only brand new on the bay. Search head only sets and see what comes up.
