Blowing grips off headless shafts

I've done this a bunch of times but I have never found a great way to block the end of the shafts and make them air tight. Its always a rigmarole. Has anyone found a good way / solution?

I take a wooden tee and give a tap on the ground to seat it a bit.

 

Then I use masking tape to hold it in place by taping along the shaft, over the end of the head of the tee then back onto the shaft. 

 

It works most of the time,  the tee holds up long enough to usually do a set of irons

I've normally used quick set epoxy, just enough to block the end. After, just use heat gun and clean out.

I’m assuming if the old epoxy is still in the shaft and not removed yet it would work??  I have about 50 old shafts with perfect grips I’d like to save

I use adapters in the appropriate size and clamp the shaft and adapter in a vise together and it usually blocks enough air to get the grips off

Short piece of 3/8 id hose plug one end with a bolt or similar

If your vice is portable, Ie not anchored, just push the shaft up against the wall/ backing, tighten and puff puff

I think they would have worked but I’m trying to blow off glued grips which is always hit or miss and the amount to lube with the less than solid make shift tip end just doesn’t hold.

Use your finger.  Block the tip with a finger on your left hand and pull the grip off with the right hand.   Otherwise, a piece of paper towel shoved in the tip covered with masking or duct tape works.

All I've ever had to do is cover the tip with a piece of masking tape. Very uncomplicated.

Same, grip tape works too.  No need to make it complicated.  Steel and shorter shafts I just use my finger and dont even bother with tape.

I’ve been using a piece of dense foam on the floor, press the shaft tip firmly into it then use my air gun tool.

 

This is only for grips I have previously installed using air.

What are you using to get some solvent in there to help break the bond of the tape adhesive?   I think you'd have better luck looking at that part of the problem instead of other methods for plugging the tip.

I have never been able to achieve the desired results with ‘glued grips’ using air.  Always seem to blow a few up. Obviously I’m the issue, and so now I use the Golfworks grip removal tool when I really want to save a grip. Takes long, but is 100% effective.

When removing glued grips with air, you need to use a tube over the grip so they don't blow up.

I have got the sleeve. Watched the videos. Followed the experts.

 

I am pathetic and know when to admit defeat and save money.

Sometimes air just can't remove well-glued grips. A sleeve can keep the grip from blowing up in your face, but you still sometimes just can't get the grip to come off without getting some solvent in there to soften the glue. IMO, if they are that much work, they aren't worth saving.

Just use a bore thru pin and stick it in the end of a shaft if it's graphite.  You don't have to be aggressive just push it in a little and add the grip.  Then just pull it out when done.

Use a grip remover tool (20$) and some grip solvent (I use WD 40 with a needle  valve) to remove glued grips. Make sure to insert it between grip and tape not between tape and shaft. Otherwise removing the tape from inside the grip is a hassle. This takes 3 min Max for a grip and works everytime.

I cover the hole with my thumb.  Easy peasy.

That’s what I do too.  With hose clamps.
