Suggest A Hybrid Or Two...

Just curious about this stuff and trying to be as knowledgeable as possible.  I know hitting low irons is a hassle for some.  I am just preparing for that to be the deal for me.  So, any older used hybrids that do a great job (not breaking the bank $100 or less per hybrid)?  Does a beginner golfer usually replace the 2, 3, and/or 4 iron with a 2, 3, and/or 4 hybrid?  Or does one around the middle of those usually do the trick?  Many thanks.

For a new golfer hybrids are great. Id recommend any Ping hybrid that fits the budget. The things just want to fly high and straight.

Are we talking one hybrid club or two?  Or three?  Just curious which one (or two, three) an older (46) beginner should start with? Is there a good starting point with one hybrid?

As many as you want go 3. 4, 5 and 6. Whatever the person feels comfortable with. No one size fits all. Hybrids are great tools for new players to great players. I have my wife hit hybrid probably 75% of the time.

I agree with the Ping option.  Really any G series model will work fine.

A previous year model of Cobra is where I'd look - I'm a believer in the rails. If you look around you may be able to hit your $100 price point, especially if you look used. Any of the recent Pings will be more dough.

I agree with the idea of just one hybrid to start, 4h is probably right. Lots of guys hit 5W or 7W instead of 3h (though I love my 3h), and then you'll need to figure out when you're back in irons. When beginning, no need to have a full bag of clubs with perfect gapping as your gapping will likely change radically as your swing improves. I still like the idea of a driver, a hybrid, a couple of irons, a wedge, and a putter and have at it. Sometimes less is more.

Any of the used Pings in the G series (G30, G, G400, G410,) are a good choice but to get to the desired price point of $100 you are probably going to have to go back to the G30 series.  The Gs and G400s are still about $130-$150 depending upon condition.

In any case, I have hit the G30, G, and G400 and essentially they all perform the same: fine or well. In fact, because I am foolish, I recently bought a G30 for $99 to replace the G30 I traded in a couple of years ago to buy something else.

New Cleveland HALOs are at $ 140. Cleveland is no longer selling them direct from their website but many retailers still have stock.

If you already have irons, I'd recommend that you first figure out where you start having difficulty with the long irons.  You'll also need some idea of the distance that you get with the longest iron that you are going to play so you can figure out what you need to get from your highest lofted hybrid.  May take some experimentation since you are looking to buy used.

For the budget you are on I would look specifically for Ping G25 or Titleist 913 And target models between 20 and 24 degrees.  They look different so you'll have some room for personal choice.

The G25 is very un-Ping like in feel - which is to say it sounds and feels great and the stock shaft is superb.

The Titleist feels great as well and is adjustable but it has a bit of a 'swollen toe' look that some people don't like.

These two models spent more time in my bag than any other club I've owned - although both are likely to be passed by the Titleist 818s which are likely a bit north of your current price target unless you just happen to get lucky.

When I started golfing I got a Taylormade burner 2.0 rescue. It was really easy to get up. You can go down that route with the new sim2 version of it. I have since moved on to a TSi2 but a TSi1 might fit the bill for you. It really depends on how good your impact is, but a bigger the hybrid is the easier it'll be to hit.

I used a hybrid to replace my 5W (19) and another for a 3I (22) - I just bought Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119's The model previous to what they have now- They have Titanium faces and they are fantastic clubs - Really nice clubs.

I played Adams XTD Ti (Titanium) and those were nice bombers. they take Taylormade adaptors - which has endless shafts out there on Ebay

I really like my Lazrus hybrid, it was $65 brand new. They offer a ton of lofts, as well. I like supporting a smaller shop that isn't far away. Their wedges are great, too.

I have 3, 4 and 5 in Ping g400 and can't even think about replacing them. I have just added the 5 as got a bit honest with myself about how good the results were with my 5 iron lately. I was going to drop the 4 and go 3 and 5 but have carried on with all 3. They are probably too close together in terms of distance sometimes but on the course I just "see" different shots for all 3 of them and have had some decent scores for me so far this year. Just high and straight, and particularly the 5 will get a workable result out of any lie, looking down at the loft on it is confidence inspiring. I thought I would struggle with the 3 but is probably my favourite although the others can't find out that.

The reason I say 818h1 is because they are pretty forgiving for what they are and will also be good for you even as you get better. One of the only hybrids I've found that's forgiving and not completely hook biased, although you can shut the face and turn it into a hook machine if needed.
