Bang for buck wedges

nev adams

Recommended Posts

I figure my wedges are about 9 years old and they seem to be losing the ability to stop on the green. I tried a groove sharpener but didn’t work.
What’s the best bang for your buck wedge? I need 3 and I’m not sure if used is a good way to go. What’s your thoughts? I’m Left handed as well otherwise I would go to Costco.

My Lazrus wedges were $50/each with a coupon. I really like them a lot.

Mizuno T20 wedges are excellent.  Not sure if you're willing to spend 150 per club though.

Wow, $35 is very enticing for a forged wedge.

<edit> $60 for a KK shaft, sold!

I also recommend the Maltby wedges from GolfWorks.  I was intrigued by the direct to consumer companies like Lazrus and Bombtech but you have no idea what shafts they are using and the quality control from these outfits can be suspect.  With GolfWorks you can order an OEM shaft and their build quality is top notch.

Nothing wrong with used if you get them in good shape.  Maltby is a great option, also look at Sub 70 wedges.  The Hogan equalizer wedges are pretty nice too.

I don't use my 52 or 56 as full swing clubs and so the shaft hasn't been a real concern. But I am interested to see if the Maltby wedge with KK shaft is much different than my Lazrus. It was only $10 more and the shaft is $25.

Sub70 wedges come in left handed and they are around $109 per club.  Excellent value and lots of shaft choices (some are upcharge) but custom built for you.  They will also adjust lofts and lie angles.  Excellent customer service

I just picked up a couple ascot wedges in great shape for under $50 shipped for each from the bay. I was intrigued by the Edison wedges but not the $180 price tag. Same designer, great sole and remarkable spin so far, even on range balls at the practice green I see hop and stop. Plenty lefty options even cheaper

Ever considered the house brand wedges from your local Dick's?  Their Tommy Armour brand looks petty decent, very reasonably priced, and are available left handed.

2ndswing.com usually has "9.0" or "9.5" condition wedges that are effectively brand new. Certainly no groove wear on those categories. Not super cheap but if you look through some of the less popular brands you may be able to assembly a good set. They do tend to have fairly plentiful lefty options (although obviously many more righty).

You may have to get different lofts from different stores/sources, but you should be able to find new RTX-4 wedges in left handed for $100 each.

If they are anything like the old Harmonized wedges back when I was starting out in the golf (1990's) that was my first three-wedge set and I really liked them. I think that would be an excellent option.

Second on the Sub70 wedges. Best wedges I've ever played. I'm also gaming their 699 Pro irons. Absolutely fantastic clubs at a great price. Starts at $109 per wedge, shaft/grip options can push it a bit higher. I'd put these clubs up against anything the major OEMs are putting out. Not only that, the CEO will give you his cell number and get on the phone to discuss technical options with you to make sure you get the right clubs. Plus they offer a 60 day money back guarantee, and the best customer service I've ever dealt with. When I screwed up my order on my driving iron from them (ordered the wrong head, my own fault), and didn't realize it until after I had hit the club a few times, they took it back and sent me the new one, no questions asked.

If you're in the market for ANY new club, check these guys out, you won't regret it.

I purchased a few 9.0 and 9.5 wedges from 2nd Swing, and all have been near brand new. The grooves had zero wear. They will also regroup and bend a wedge to loft and lie, which is pretty rare for a used club purchase.
