Leave range balls on the chipping green or pick them up?

Recommended Posts

Lots of people are lazy, while others lack simple manners that tell them to clean up the mess they created.  Same slob leaves tees on the tee or stuck in the ground, instead of removing them and throwing them off to the side, maybe into the nearby collection cup.  It's NOT the job of the course to clean up after slobs.  The same slobs leave garage on the ground after throwing it at a trash bin and missing.  We saw each of these examples this past weekend.  If anyone in my family uses a practice green, out of respect for others, we  clean up after ourselves.

Left about 20 range balls on the chipping green today.  I had been practicing short sand shots from the practice bunker to the chipping green.  At this range and course someone will come along and use the balls.

I view it the same as leaving part of a bucket on the driving range.  Someone will appreciate what's been left and use them.  This is a common practice where I'm at.

I did rake the practice bunker before leaving.

Perhaps after covid panic dies down more courses will put out the PVC rakes again.  We took ours out during the crazy times and just put them back out a month ago or use.

I find it amazing that someone would chip balls all over the chipping green and just leave them there for the next person to pick up or move out of their way so that they can chip.

The balls are either put there by the course or left there by a nice person leaving them for the next person to use. Anyone using them should pick them back up or group them to the side so that the next person doesn't have to deal with your mess before they can use the green

To anyone saying the staff takes care of them. So a staff person is watching the green? You hit balls all over the green and when you leave they clear the balls for the next person to chip? If so fine. If that's not the case then the next person wanting to use the area has to deal with your mess.

To those that have said they use the balls on the chipping green and then take them over to the range and hit them. Really? They were left there or supplied there to use there. If someone leaves balls at the range they were left there for someone to hit so hit away but if they were left there at the chipping area they were left there to use for chipping.

I find it odd that someone would waste range balls at the chipping green. I suppose if it was a pitching green where you're hitting the ball from well off the green. Weird people do weird things and most golfers are weird.

It's a mix. Two courses I regularly play have signs that say to not leave any balls on the chipping green. One other leaves a few dozen out on theirs.

The thing I do not like are those that I occasionally encounter where there are probably a full two or three large buckets worth of balls littering the whole green. It's basically a complete mess left by entitled slobs.

Someone leaving balls for someone else to use vs hitting them down range is "entitlement"?

Where I'm at there are retired folk who wait for someone to leave balls.  I think it's because they can't afford it and still want to do something golf related.

Different perspectives for sure.  To be clear this isn't a country club, it's a public course.  It's also used by the general public.

If it's just a couple dozen balls, no problem, from my perspective.

My point was for the situation where the bulk of the green is just fully littered with tons of balls. A complete mess. That serves nobody. Most of these courses have no pvc sweepers so clearing a useable area to hit to is annoying. The green didn't start that way at the beginning of the day. In this situation, I fully stand by my comment.

If they swept them off to the side before leaving the green, again, no problem.

I've got no issue whatsoever with folks who want to use some of these balls for the range or their own purposes.

sometimes I struggle with this (e.g. go with the flow and don’t complain) versus “be the change you want to see in the world” and maybe ruffle some feathers. Not always an easy choice 🙂

I have no problem ruffling feathers I'm quite outspoken.  I was inferring that this is an absolute  non issue.  A few extra balls hanging around a practice facility for a junior golfer, a young father, a guy short for an extra half bucket, id just do what that course does

Fair enough to leave the balls for the retired folks. But do they have to leave them all over the green? That’s the entitled part of the comment, and that is the point. Different perspective is correct. Cleaning up after oneself is the norm in my world, always leaving a mess for others to clean up is the norm in another perspective.

Totally agree, never know why people leave their range balls there. That whole thing of feeling like it is some else's responsibility is beyond me.

Rakes still not in traps is the most asinine thing on the planet right now.

There's a separate green for chipping at one of my local places between the first tee and the range. I've never not seen a few dozen range balls there year round, I'm pretty sure no one ever picks them up because they've are always there.  Bunch of people warm up with them on the way to the range, or knock a few around on the way back. I don't see the big deal.

However, seeing balls - usually range -  left behind on the main practice putting green is very annoying though.

I don't use range balls when on the chipping/putting green (Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose?  Don't you want true reaction?) but if I see them I'll just take 30 seconds and swipe them over to the fringe, no big deal.

seems rude to me to show up to an empty clean chipping area and leave it littered with balls. You're also impactig the surface for the other people practicing there. They could at least put the balls back into the bucket and leave it on the side. Curious if they pay for the bucket, or if they're free?

If it's empty when you show up, you keep it tidy.

I never even knew range balls for practise was a thing. Kind of defeats the purpose to practise short game with 1 piece no spin distance balls.
