US only, right?

Doesn't look like it. It does "regular" stats like GIR, # of putts, etc... Probably has all the data it needs so maybe in a future release.

Are these features iOS only? I don't see anything like this in mine and just re-installed it to check.

Nothing under "More" showing in my iOS Ghin app either.

It would need each hole map geocoded for fairway/rough/sand and so forth.

I think that (the actual lie) gets manually entered for the shot tracking since GPS isn't going to know if you are in the lip of a bunker or the grass 1 foot away. The GPS function marks the distance though. From there you just need the shots gained calcs.

Thanks.  I haven't looked at updating the last few days.  An update was listed.

And only $40/year for the detailed heat maps. I feel like there will be a lot of competitors upset with that. You can also preview courses before you play them and measure any distance. This update is huge!

Oh great; can't wait to see guys whipping out their phones on the green, squinting in the sun trying to see their screen so they can "study" the subtle breaks in their 6 foot bogey putt. It's bound to slow pace of play, which is the last thing golf needs. I know the technology was already available elsewhere, but I'm surprised and disappointed that the USGA is lending its name and support to this "upgrade". I guess the potential revenue source outweighs its commitment to pace of play. Ironic that just when the Tour is finally banning green books since it regards green reading as a skill that should differentiate players, the USGA is providing the same maps to every amateur in an app.

I’ve been using the Golfshot app for the last year, but happy to see this in the GHIN app. The green maps are a good addition, one Golfshot doesn’t have, and will be good for playing new courses.

It almost looks like they purchased the GolfLogix app. The OS, imagery, even the preview of the green maps looks EXACTLY like it does in GolfLogix.

Definitely uses Golflogix in the background. I’m curious if Golflogix licensed this to the USGA or if there was some type of M&A.

Ha, ha! I have to admit when I re-read my post it did sound a little more ornery than I'd intended. Sorry about that.

I've been playing this game for 55+ years so I can get that way about some things. I've just seen too many people look at putts from 4 different angles AND plumb bob it from <10' to save bogey (or worse!) for a $5 bet.  Heck I've seen guys plumb bob shots from 50 yards out and THEN go through their pre-shot routine which may include practice swings and Sergio-like waggles. Basically taking way too long to play a shot that just ain't all that important. Those guys slow down the pace of play and lessen other players' enjoyment of their rounds.

On one hand the USGA and PGA tour are about to outlaw green books for pros as they are seen are unfair aids to players that don't have the skill to read the greens themselves, sort of like caddies standing behind the player to line up a putt before that rule was changed. On the other hand the USGA is tacitly endorsing their use at the weekend hacker level primarily (imo) because it wants the revenue from it. Disappointing, but not all that surprising I guess. 😀

There are so many bigger problems contributing to slow play. An app that less than 5% of the golfing population will use is not going to impact your pace of play.

Just upgraded. May see if it's good tomorrow, if it doesn't rain out.

FYI: You can look at courses ahead of time, or use it on the course, I believe, by going to "More" and then "Course Maps & GPS". May actually be the recommended way to use it, IMHO. To me, it will come in handy when I play in one group that score is uploaded to GHIN for me.

But I can see some rounds where I can track stats while playing. May take some adjusting because I don't use a phone while playing at all (Because garmin S62).

Also has Heat Map & Putt Maps. Heat view has fewer direction changes via arrows than the putt map.

At my club, green view is not available for any of the courses. We have three 9s which rotate on a weekly basis making up the main 18 for the week with the other 9 being the 9 hole only option for the week. One of the 18 hole combos view is also not available. All combos have been rated in GHIN are available to post outside the GPS function.

You may have to view them as 9s alone and not combined? There's a local 9-hole muni near me and I was genuinely shocked they even have those mapped. Of the two courses I have been playing going on 15-20 years now, I know the breaks. The maps are pretty accurate just looking at them on the phone.

I did. Yesterdays #TNML was rained out. But, will be playing today and Monday. Todays round, I will reference the maps, but I know the greens (see above) very well. From what I've seen, they're quite accurate. It's just a matter of interpreting them. I'm playing a course I play 1-2 times a year on Monday, so it may be of more use then. One of the big things I'm giddy about is the breaks away from the greens (front or near pin). Which ones do I have to fly, which ones can I land short and roll up, or which ones away from the pin/middle of green (many are old-school sloped back to front).

Next Q: anyone know the grid spacing? Is it by yard? Didn't find that info yet. I think it may be.

Nope, doesn't work.

It has an overlay of red yellow green colors to help indicate the severity of the slopes.
