Anyone else get annoyed with guys constantly removing and replacing head covers during a round?

I play with a couple of guys who use head covers on various clubs.  I don't see the need for them, but maybe someone can tell me why they are necessary.  On every tee where they use driver, they remove the cover, toss it on the tee box, hit the ball, replace the cover (if they remember to pick it up), and repeat on the next tee.  One guy has a putter cover, which he takes off on the green, tosses on the green, replaces on the green, then repeats the same on every green.  Granted, this doesn't add a significant amount of time to the round, but I don't get the need for them at all, and consider any time they add to a round unnecessary.  I used to have one on my driver just because I liked the looks of it, but found I'd rather just grab the club and not have to deal with it.  Is there really any need for them?  How much damage can you really do to a golf club just carrying it around?

Well, I use them on my "woods" because I don't want them to look like I bought them at a garage sale 15 years ago, or make noise while walking or riding to the next shot. Guys WITHOUT headcovers are loud as hell! "clink, clink clink".  I want a peaceful day on the course.

This is almost as good as the thread with the one dude who was mad the group in front of him left a tee by his ball when he hit into them.   I can't imagine the struggles of your day to day life if this is what bothers you.

OP has always been an "It's all about me." sort of a bloke.

Hilarious that you think you know me from some posts on Golfwrx.  Sure, if everyone played golf the way I do, we'd all be much happier with the pace of play on the golf course, but I get along quite well with everyone I play with, and I guarantee you'd enjoy a round with me as well.

As long as it doesn't slow down play, I don't care what people do with their precious clubs. If I keep the honor on the tee I never have to wait for them to "unsheath the big dog." 🤣

Agreed.  But some folks I play with seem to be a bit head-cover challenged, and I just wondered if others had encountered the same.  Glad they're moving this thread around the forums though so everyone gets to participate.

My day-to-day life is swell, but my days on the golf course would be better if people would stop fiddlin' around and just hit the ball!

Three of the four of us that play use headcovers on our woods, drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, taking them off before our shots, putting them back on after, and we play in about 2:45 (yes, for 18!). Our fourth who doesn't use headcovers always seems to ride with me. His clubs are constantly banging into each other and I don't want his clubs banging into mine causing damage no matter how slight.

Actually, of course there may be exceptions, but I think anyone not using head covers on their woods and putter is usually a bad golfer.

It's always my friends who are new to golf who let their clubs clank around getting damaged on the back of a golf cart. Obviously their clubs generally suck, but still. I could complain about the noise.

Good players generally have expensive woods and putters and they would rather keep them in great condition...

Imagine your putter or driver getting a ding on top and having to look at that before every shot...no gracias.

Many of us who are super avid golfers take pride in the cleanliness and good condition of our clubs. It matters. Look good, feel good, play good. And also have actual resale value when they aren't beat to crap.

Edit: removed the word mint, since that's always a bad word to use regarding used equipment 😄

i love these threads. the guy using headcovers gets the last laugh because his clubs are still in great condition when he goes to sell them to upgrade, while the clown who didnt care has clubs that look like they got drug over a concrete driveway and then swung in a pile of rocks. i just sold my blades i used for 2 years and they looked like they had barely been hit, thanks to headcovers. so go ahead and try to hate, im getting the last laugh 😀

I kind of agree with the op.  Why are people so OCD with their precious little clubs.

And the guys who have covers on all their irons...please child!

i am sure the same guys line up the labels on their soda cans in their fridge so they are all pointing in the same direction.

We must strive to achieve 100% efficiency at all costs.

And we can best do this by simply being lazy.

It's not an "OCD" thing. It's a practical thing.

If you spend $200+ on a driver and/or $200+ on a putter, most people would prefer to protect that investment.

The materials on the modern driver are pretty fragile. It doesn't take much at all to produce a noticeable mark or ding on a driver head.

Irons are much more durable, so I agree there's no need for iron covers.

Your statements could be made toward people who wash their cars as well. Wouldn't it be more "efficient" to not wash your car? It will still work just as well with a dirty exterior.

But people wash their cars because they want them to look good and washing prolongs the life of the paint and the value of the car. Same with golf clubs. What's wrong with that? It's just the smart thing to do.

It's good to take good care of your things.

I probably spent about a minute total today messing with headcovers.  Too bad,  we would have had a pretty speedy round but I killed it with my headcovers.

The thing seems to be far more trouble than it's worth (he generally tips it or has some other trouble at least once per round), but he loves his little toy, and he's certainly not gonna put it into storage after paying that much for a cart.

Hmm, surprising comment. I see what sparked the post. Didn't get that GI Joe when you were 5 pal?

Oops. My clubs were bought at a garage sale 15 yrs ago. Then given to the thrift store. Then stuffed into a barrel with dozens of other clubs. Then taken home by me. Then cleaned and taken to the course. They look like it too.

I do like headcovers for woods, especially persimmon, especially while riding in the car. Never irons though, and never my beat up old vintage putters.

The putters that are being punished are uncovered in a dark corner of the basement along with the other misbehaving clubs.

Metal woods always have covers.

And, I like finding tees on the tee. The other day I must have harvested 5 tees on each tee. Maybe someone had a hole in their bag.

But at least I'm not that guy who never saw a creek where he didn't spend 5 minutes looking for golf balls he didn't loose. Harumph!

What?!?! People complain about this?!

I thank them--on any par 3 or a longer hole where I'm teeing off with FW, hybrid, or iron, I look around for a broken tee to use. Why break my own tee when I can use a pre-broken one?

One person did in a "what are your pet peeves" thread. This guy was really irritated by it. The reaction was exactly what you'd expect.

FTR, I see it exactly the same as you. If I'm not hitting driver, I'm looking around the tee box for a broken tee to use.

Yeah, I forgot about that one. 🤦‍♀️

But I can't decide. That situation happens once in a blue moon. This one happens all day every day.

So which one is "better" ? boredom.gif

Zero time lost but I would never put a dirty/wet club in a cover. Just saying.

I totally get that.  I forgot to mention that I clean my clubs after each round and if my club got super dirty (read: dirt caked on it) from that shot, I do clean that off with my finger before covering.

He kept them in gym socks, took them off to play, put them back on before they went back in the closet.  I won't even get into G.I. Joe coming out of the closet, and not that there was anything wrong with that! Not one bit!

I'm skipping the range this week.  Instead I'm practicing my headcover removal and replacement techniques.  I think my problem is I replace the cover to steeply adding extra time.  I think I can get my one minute down to 30 seconds if I figure out how to shallow the approach to the club.  Any tips?

The real key is stabilizing the shaft.  You need a solid base to work from.  Rookies use the knock kneed thigh squeeze on the shaft.  Wrong!!! You can't walk and use that technique.  It's a real time waster.

The secret is using the bicep to pec squeeze on the shaft freeing up two hands for CHC (Club Head Cover) installation while walking.  There are cable exercises you can use to increase PSI for maximum stabilization while walking but make sure you work both sides for symmetry.
