Smoking near kids

Recommended Posts

Living in California, I rarely see anyone smoking at the range.  As for someone smoking on the putting green, I steer clear of them or just do something else until they are done.   To me, its not worth an argument.

I personally like to have a cigar during golf, but not if any kids (mine included) are playing.

When I’m with my kid, we just avoid them whether range, chip, putt or course.  @mrshinsa Obviously, we go to the same course, and thankfully, there aren’t many smoking cigars at the practice areas.

If it’s the adults only, I love having a good cigar during the round, but I never drink.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

I am of the exact mindframe as you are except I will drink ONE beer every now and then if the notion hits me. Now when i grew up everyone smoked (60s 70s) but I never did but I do chew and dip. However I enjoy a cigar on the course from time to time. Now some people take it to the extreme on the anti smoking thing--- At my former course ( now closed) I was always up on the range early with a cigar and coffee in hand watching the sun come up. I always went to the left corner to keep from touron hacks from shanking balls across me. I had been up there maybe 30 minutes and the rest of the tee was open. Now these were out of towner tourons-- One of them made some kind of smart aleck remark about me smoking. I told him the whole was tee some 50 yards long was wide open and besides after all I was local and a full time member and I was there first. Now I am not a ****** and if the range had been crowded and especially if kids were present I would put it out or moved on. I would absolutely not walk up on a putting green smoking one if kids or others were present that it may bother. But some prople live to be dramatic over stuff

I would say 99.9% of the time you can avoid them and there plenty of space to stay away from them. Most people understand people don’t like smoke.

I’ve only been to one place where it was huge  issue. This place hands out shots every few holes and everybody is doing money games.   Can be a fun place if you into that but no place for kids.

I am no fan of cigarettes but don't mind cigars and the MJ, since it's legal here in CA..LOL   But I do believe in peoples rights to do with themselves what they please if it's legal.  It's my opinion that I have no right whatsoever to tell someone to stop smoking outside.  I don't have to like it but they have a right to partake.  If it bothers me, I will just stay away.  But getting verbal about it makes everyone a loser...  I think it's super important for kids to know that the world doesn't revolve around them and they may need to learn to adjust sometimes, no different than we all did.

I disagree with some of this and agree with the rest.

I agree with the somewhat obvious point you should not “tell” someone to stop doing something you don’t like, unless you think they are maliciously targeting you or people you feel inspired to protect. Even if you are being targeted, obviously not everyone agrees on how to enforce that appropriately.

but I think Asking a smoker to adjust is fine, in my opinion.

some reasoning may help in the parent acheving their goal , like the putting green is small and smokers are upwind of it, or playing partners smoke is canvassing the kid during the round. But that does not make one party right, and the other wrong, in my opinion.

Even if you generally just don’t agree with people smoking in general, people should probably be allowed to say what they want (“I think you are gonna hurt yourself and others by smoking,” or whatever one feels inspired to say).

If is also fine if the smokers then say “no,” for whatever reason. the parents/kids are not policy/law enforcement.

If parent/child are passionate about it still after hearing “no,” they should take it up with the relevant policy makers/enforcement (I.e. ask management to step in).

I think this approach would be great for everybody, nobody would loose, except for people that disagree with certain laws/policies, or all law in general (which is obviously a whole different conversation).kids learn the world doesn’t revolve around them, they also learn they can try multiple ways to avoid things their parents think are gross and/or toxic. I think we agree on that being a useful thing for them to learn.

And obviously, the smoker may consider it a loss that they have to listen to things they find inconvenient. or the parent may consider it a loss if they have to take steps past asking nicely to get immediate gratification. But I think it may be ultimately more difficult to deal with other alternatives

Agreed, but doesn’t hurt to ask for adjustments. If they say no, so be it, cause arguing in front of your kids will teach some not great habits also.

Don't get me wrong, I agree, everyone has a right to say what they want, so if you want to ask someone to stop smoking, I support that.  I just think that on a range or a golf course outside, there are plenty of ways to create distance from someone who is smoking and everyone wins.  Yeah, it bothers me but like I said, I just am not a fan of teaching my kids that they need to complain to make the situation around them suit them.  More important to me that they learn they only have control over what THEY do and have to power to change things if they so wish, or at least try.

Now if someone is smoking where they aren't supposed to outside (which we also have a lot of here in CA) then I understand speaking up and encourage it.  But the course or range may be a stretch for me to make that request is all I am saying, nor do I think it's appropriate unless stated otherwise.  My first job was working in a bowling alley, so I am no stranger to cigarette smoke, it was/is awful.  LOL

Nothing quite like the smell of someone lighting up at 0700 hrs as you're waiting to start a round.  I don't like it, but I just move away from it - not a big deal. I walk so it's never an issue having someone smoke sitting next to me. If a smoker somehow ended up in my cart and was polite enough to ask "Do you mind if I smoke?" I would probably respond "No. Do you mind if i fart?"

I agree it's someones right to smoke outside but when you're at a packed driving range and the guy next to you is smoking right by your side, and you have nowhere else to move then what? I think it's not only important for kids to know the world doesn't revolve around them but so do those adults who are smoking. they're the kids who never learned.

Or Better Yet…  keep your mouth shut and parent/kid adjusts.  I don’t smoke, but if I did and someone asked me, there would be a confrontation.  People need to stop raising their kids to be a wuss.

People need to learn to stay in their lane.  That famous saying “know your role and shut your hole.”

I agree with this statement a lot.  It goes both ways when someone is smoking.   Most people smoking have the common sense to be away from people. If you just walk up to a crowded area and light it up then it's the smoker who is the problem,

The same person who just lights it up on a crowded driving range is the same person who is standing in line for food outside and will just light one up. I wound't go out my way to pick a fight with someone lighting it up but lots of people would and do say something about it.

I really don't see to many issues though at golf courses to be an issue.   I have a bigger problem with people vaping and our all places it been at Disneyworld.  That's just unacceptable there.

In California there is no smoking within 20' of any state, county or city building which includes city and municipal golf courses.  It is also illegal to smoke cigarettes, cigars, pipes, vaping devices “or any other lighted or heated tobacco or plant product intended for inhalation” on any state beach or in any state park in California.  You also can't smoke in any vehicle (parked or moving) with a person under the age of 18 in the car.

This state has taken the stance that by putting these laws in place that they will be able to mitigate future expenses associated with heart and lung disease associated with smoking.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Man, not a smoker here, but at a certain point, mind your own business.

I don’t miss being around smoke in the workplace, bars, restaurants, and airplanes, but if someone wants to smoke OUTSIDE I need to butt out!

Imagine you’re an asthmatic non smoker living in an apartment next to a person that smokes on their balcony and their smoke wafts into your apartment daily. Are you going to butt out or move?
