Anybody using CBX Zipcore wedges?

hammergolf

Recommended Posts

I’ve always like the tech behind these wedges to improve spin and distance consistency. I’m a good wedge player, but if these can be more consistent I’m interested. After reading about Fritelli’s findings from playing the set gap and sw of the tcb irons I’m even more curious… I’d love to see some testing between the standard Zipcore and CBX Zipcore .

I retired my sm7s a couple of months ago and purchased the new CBXs in 50, 54 and 58 degrees.

I’m a 13 hcap and consider my wedges one of my strong points. In my book, this is one of the few clubs that live up to their advertising. They are more forgiving than my old Vokeys. They do have a different feel, but it’s still very good and wedge like. I was afraid that they would be too hot to be precise, but that is not the case. They are very controlled. The spin is definitely more pronounced, but my Vokeys were due to be replaced so it’s not a fair comparison.

The highest praise that I can give them is that when these wear out, I would certainly buy this again.

I’m interested in these also for this year and look forward to hearing more experiences with them. I have SM8 wedges now.

I just bought a CBX ZIpcore 54* which replaced a Callaway CB 54*

Now I am considering replacing my CBX2 Full Face 58*

This is the one of the most solid wedges I have ever hit

The head feels heavier than the CBX2 and I can feel it throughout the entire swing

I didn't think they could make it more forgiving but fat shots are almost a thing of the past

Even the thin shots are not that bad

Just a solid wedge

I did not think it would be that much different than the CBX2 but I was wrong

I bought a CBX2 last year and if it was older I would have replaced it already

Definitely an upgrade from the CBX2, I didn't think they could do it.

PS

This is just my experience but I was a huge fan of the CBX2 and now I am a bigger fan of the ZipCore CBX.

I would with your thoughts. The heads do have a good weight to them which I prefer. I also love the stock shaft. The CBX shaft (DG Spinner) was much better for me vs my Vokey shafts.

I know a lot of better players stress the importance of getting the correct grind and bounce on your wedges. Yet the CBX's are praised and frequently played by better players even though you cannot select a specific grind or bounce for specific lofts. Is that part of the reason for their greatness, the simplicity of just picking your lofts and letting Cleveland decide which grind/bounce combo works best for each loft? Keeping it simple with less overthinking and just playing easy to hit forgiving wedges.

Wedges were the last part of my bag rebuild, so I headed to 2nd Swing to try as many as I could my hands on. Off the top of my head I tried:

Vokey SM8s in a couple of grinds

Jaws

Rtx Zipcore

CBX Zipore

Mizuno T22/20

TM MG3

Ping Glide 3.0

For all of the above, I tried half shots, full swings, and some standard chips. The CBX Zipcores outperformed the others by a huge margin both in terms of forgiveness and feel for me. I thought they might be too chunky for tight lies, so tried doing flop shots off the matte in the bag to see what happened. I was able to pull them off. I really think they are excellent, and am looking forward to getting out on the course with them once it thaws out.

I keep telling myself I don’t need wedges this year and you’re not helping matters at all….

I think I am going to order the 60* and try it. If I can hit the shots I want and have the versatility I like I know I won’t have issues with the 48* or 54*…

Interested in the responses here. I have CBX2 in the bag now and love them. Not sure if the "upgrade" would be worth it.

I'm a huge CBX2 fan. I had no plans to buy the CBX Zipcore until I accidently left my 56* on the course on New Year's Eve. I've been working really hard on them short game the last couple of weeks, so I can give a head-to-head comparison.

I'd say the biggest difference is the CBX Zipcore feels better - more 'solid yet soft' at impact.  I find from a forgiveness/playability standpoint they improvement is more iterative than substantial. I don't feel a need to go out and replace my other CBX2's.

Knocked SM8s out of my bag. Unbelievable feel, so consistent and easy to hit. Tons of confidence in them and the my can hit every shot a "player's" wedge can hit.

Highly recommended

I want to order these as soon as they're available in Australia. I've been playing in wet slop the past few months and I can really notice the difference in spin and stopping power and lack of flyers from my Glide 3 56 and CBX2 60 vs the JPX 921F set Gap and PW.

I went for a putter/wedge fitting this weekend. I have Zipcore Tour Rack wedges that I really like, but I was shocked at how much better the CBX Zipcore wedges are. I'm a low single digit and my short game is by far the best part of my game. I could not believe how consitent my launch, spin, and carry numbers were with the CBX. Not only did I launch them lower consistently, I spun them more consistently, and my deviation was better than everything else I tested. I will be ordering CBX 's this week.....

How do they play off tight lies around the green?

We’ve got 6” of snow on the ground so as soon as I can get out on the grass I will report back. I know the 50* and 54* will be fine because the v sole has worked well for me before, however it was awful in open faced shots with the 60. Just by looking at the grind on the higher lofted wedges it looks like it would be versatile but we shall see.

Great

I only played 1 rd with it , but when practicing with it, I have hit almost any shot you can think of

I have a 54* and it has been as automatic as it can be.

Tight, soft, or sand, it has worked great.

Thoroughly pleased with the purchase and will replace my CBX2 if they come out with a full face or satin finish anytime soon

I finally upgraded from the original cbx(50/54) to cbx zipcore. Never played the cbx2 because I loved the ogs so much. Have been to the range a few times and they play exactly like I expect. Some people think the soles are to big but these can do it all. I have a cbx full face for my highest lofted club and that thing is just ridiculously good.

I was hitting off a mat inside but I tried some open face shots and it worked fine. As soon as I get a chance I’ll take a 60* out on the grass and make sure it works the same.

Cbx are amazingly easy to hit, spin plenty, very forgiving and nice feeling. I had a lot of trouble with little touch shots just off the green though. I had to go back to standard zipcore. I’m comparing the standard to the cbx2 though so maybe the new ones are better.

Why were the touch shots trouble? Was the sole too wide?

Just purchased a 54* CBX Zipcore and 60*RTX Full face. I'm playing tomorrow and will report back, but I am replacing my SM8's-

have only hit them off of mats while testing and both felt great- I use the 54* on 105-50 yard shots, so will be interested in how it performs on full shots.

Questions for the massive. The CBX Full-Face isn't Zipcore? What's the Full-face losing if it's not Zipcore?

Been looking for new full-face wedges...

I would red up on the 2

Zipcore moved a little weight and improved the grooves

At least that's there speel to get us to buy new clubs

I love the look of the wedges but I play mainly firm courses and worried there's too much bounce for around the greens.

If it helps, I have hit the 58 off hardpan and it is great. Very much a C grind look on that one. Nice curved leading edge that sits low. No issues at all off tight fringes or hitting flops. I just traded in my CBX2 58 for a CBX Zipcore 58. It is good for so many shots. It’s like a security blanket — and I’m Linus.

Good to hear. That’s my only concern is how it would react on tight lies and if I’m able to open the face of the 60* without the leading edge getting too high.

Cavity back specialty wedges are just fun. Absolute pleasure to use them. My TM Hi Toes still have a little life in them but, a lot of new offerings out there in this market.

CBX2, Mack Daddy CBX, Ping Glide 3 / 2 and new 4 coming out soon. Lot's of wrenches to try but, everyone wants to bag Vokeys because of the "cool factor".
