Are PXG Irons "That" Good?

Brenkj

Recommended Posts

I've never even considered PXG irons before because of price.  But now that they're running some crazy discounts on their 0311 Gen 3 irons, they've got my attention.   I've read all the online reviews I can find, but I always take those with a big grain of salt.    I'm wondering if the folks on this forum who have played PXG's can weigh in on whether they're really as good as advertised.  I'm currently playing TM P770's, so my current clubs aren't old.   But if PXG would be a decent upgrade performance-wise, for a reasonable price, then I think I have to consider that.  Plus, I've been reading some good things about graphite irons shafts, and this would give me a chance to try them.

I'm about an 8 or 9 handicap, so I think the model I would opt for is the "P", so if anyone can give their personal experience with that specific model, that would be great.    Thanks.

There are several long threads here about the Gen 3 P irons.  In my opinion, the answer is YES.

Simple answer is yes, they are very good. I've played PXG irons since the day they came out and don't see me changing anytime soon or even later for that matter.

But so are pretty much all the OEM's offerings. They are all good and just comes down to personal feel and what fits your eye.

They are very good. I always played Taylormade and jumped on the P770 pre-order. I played them and I liked them, but something felt off. Switched to zx5 and loved them other than my swing doesn't like the sole. After that I bought some 699, pro's and really really like them. They are similar to PXG in my opinion. When PXG had the hero pricing last year, I ordered a set. They were awesome. Similar to 699 Pro but felt much better. Just got a set of Gen 4 PXG 0311P and they are longer than the 699 Pro and super soft.  I won't get rid of my 699 Pro's but my PXG's are my main gamers.

Just a bunch of jacked up lofts that make you think you’re hitting the irons farther on the launch monitor. It’s a good hustle ill

give em that.

How do you figure???

The PXG Gen 2 and Gen 3 0311p 7 iron is 31 degrees.

The P790 is 30.5 degrees.

The T200 is 31 degrees.

Pretty standard for "players" irons.

They're really good. Let's take the Gen 3 XP. Wide sole but can't be seen at address. Least amount of offset of any GI irons, same as T300. Lofts same as T300 and little stronger thank G425/JPX 921 HM. Sound and feel is better than anything you'll find in this chassis size. If you go Gen 3 P it gets a little muddier but still they're that good. Oh, and here's the part..... $133 per club with the Elevate steel. That's the same Elevate steel Cally uses in Apex and they're $185 per. The closest competitor for size, playability, offset, topline and feel is JPX 921 HM. They're that good. I've played em and tried to replace em. I shouldn't have but here we are. GET 'EM!

I've been considering the 0211 DC to replace my Mizuno JPX800s. I'm headed from reg flex steel to regular flex lighter graphite as I'm getting older.  At 77 bucks per club you can't really lose.  Haven't read anything bad about them, except from people who have not played them.

BTW My PXG 0811XF driver kicked the Ping Max out of the bag.  The PXG is a tad longer, just as forgiving and more workable.  The Max would either fade, fade or fade.  The PXG can be worked both ways.

They aren't.  For clear data based results - go to golfspy.  Unbiased reviews and most data points.  No worries do you like them, yet there are A LOT better irons at lower price points.  Some people like a Rolex - some people like PXG.  Similar vibes.

Might have been the case a few years ago or for Gen4, but not Gen3 @$133 per iron or the 0211 series @$77 per iron.  Both are cheaper than TaylorMade, Titleist, Ping or Callaway?

Before I even played PXG, when the Gen 3 irons came out there was a independent test (golf digest?) Or another similar review that did a video of all the players type irons that year from the big companies.  JPX 919 Forged, HMB, Callaway, Taylormade, Titleist,  ect. Out of all of them, PXG was in the top 5. The 0311P and the 0211 DC.  The 0311P was in the top 2 or 3 if I remember correctly by a few yards or so.

Let's assume you have $1,200 to spare...

  • If 0311 irons fly noticeably better than your current irons, the answer is yes.
  • If 0311 irons fly the same/worse than your current irons, the answer is no.

Like every consumable item we buy (most of it is meant to fall apart!), I wonder about the durability of those multiple screws irons.

Since PXG has no where near the length on the market, we don't have long-term results on their wear 'n tear.

But alas, as an Arizonan, I Luv it that there are now two major OEM golf club makers from this state out for the game.  FWIW, I have never tried any of the irons, but will attempt to this season if I can borrow one at the range or course from a bud.

Thanks for the response.   When you bought the PXG irons using the hero pricing, I assume those were the Gen 3 version? And were they the 0311P?   If so, how did hey compare to your new Gen 4 irons?    Thanks

I certainly hear what you're saying if we're talking $400 per iron.   But are there really any top-performing irons out there selling for less than $133 each?

I've played the Gen 1 0311Ts for the last five years, and just put the Gen 4s into play.  I bought the Gen 1s with "hero" pricing, so didn't cost me any more than any other premium iron, and they had the least amount of offset of any non-custom set I could find or buy.  I normally play irons for about that amount of time (4-5 years), so hadn't really looked seriously at others over the last few years.  I chose the PXG Gen 4 0311Ts this time for similar reason.  I've trusted my game to them for the last several years, and then they had a deal going after thanksgiving for $225/club (for the black), which wasn't that much of a difference when comparing to TM P770 or Callaway TCBs, once the shaft changes were incorporated.  Also, the wait for the TM was into February when I was ordering in November, or perhaps longer, depending on shaft and the supply chain issues.

I prefer the low offsets, the consistency and forgiveness, and feel the price difference, when I think about how long I play a set of irons, is negligible when making that investment.

To get lower offsets, you have to go to the TM P7MB or P7TW, and I just don't play enough to play those blades anymore.  I used to play the Titleist 681s (constant offset of 0.080"), and had three sets that I played from about 99 thru 2009.

For me, because I play irons for usually at least 4 years, the difference in price was worth it to get the new ones.

YMMV
