Anyone ditch the 3 wood for a 4 wood?

I lofted my Epic Flash SZ 3W up from 15° to 16°, to make it 4Wish.

I also want wouldn't mind swapping out my 3H for a 6/7W.

FYI... I tried the 7w to replace a 3hy and ended up in the UW instead.  Best of both.

I'm seriously considering a change in this part of the bag. 3w is 15* PXG 0341x Accra 475 M5, or 5w is SIM Ventus Black 7X turned down with same length shafts. I'm looking at the new Cobra LTDx as an option as I'm looking for the ideal launch/spin without too much distance. I had an M5 15* that went further than most people's drivers and have a few run outs into water hazards that are to be avoided with our deadly snakes to consider!

At 105mph ss for 3w, what launch/spin gets me 245-250yd carry and ~40* land angle?

I am making the change back to 4W this year. Looking to have better FW/HY/4 iron gapping this year. Found the 4i and the 2HY was a big gap. Changing to 16.5*/21*/24* for the lofts instead of 13.5*/18*/24*

Good evening WRX. I wanted to hear some stories of folks that have ditched the 3 wood and what they’ve replaced it with. I have a XR Pro 3 wood that’s always been really good to me and held its spot in my bag for a long time now. I just don’t find myself using it all that much though. Off the tee, it’s not too far behind my driver, so I usually just pull driver. In the fairway, I’m usually either to far to reach with the 3 wood or close enough to reach with hybrid or less. So it’s this weird spot in my bag that I’m considering changing. What are some paths that others have gone down?

I dropped the 3w and 5w for the 4w and added another wedge instead. One of the best decisions I've made equipment wise.

In the process of dropping my 4 wood (16*) for a 5 wood (18*). In testing (albeit off a mat but on Trackman hitting out onto a range), the 5 wood was getting almost the same carry number as the 4 wood but was much more consistent. So, yeah, we'll see when I get the 5 wood and have a totally different experience out on the course. Story of my life.

This sorta happened with my set up but my 7wd was going almost 3wd carry. I switched to a 5wd lofted up to get that carry I wanted over the 3wd. Provided more carry yardage over that dagburn 7wd freak

Like many have posted, I pulled the 3 and 5 wood out. And built up a Maltby 16° KE4 4 wood and a Maltby KE4 21° Hyway. Both with Kuro Kage  shafts. 4 wood stays in the ballpark easier than a 3-wood for me.

The Hyway is smaller than a fairway wood but a larger than a hybrid. It's a great trouble club and an absolute blast to hit.

I recently put an Epic Speed 4 wood in the bag as my only fairway wood and the second longest club in my bag.

The 4 wood is replacing both a Mavrik 3 wood and an OG Rogue Heavenwood so I'm down to 13 clubs for the time being.

My new bag goes driver > four wood > four hybrid > five iron.

The conventional wisdom is that a lot of players can hit a four wood as long as a three wood and more consistently too. While I hit plenty of good shots with that old 3 wood, the 4 wood has stepped right up and gives me similar distances off a tee. It's also easier to elevate off the turf which has led to longer shots in that situation.

The biggest benefit for me has been shot commitment. I love the Heavenwood, but it kind of smeared the gap between the three wood and hybrid. Whenever I used it on the course it seemed like I was less than fully committed, wondering if I should just hit the hybrid (for a 190-200 shot) or if I should be swinging the three wood (for a 210-215 shot).

Now there's a clear breaking point between shots where one club is the obvious choice over the other. I'm able to buy into the shot and focus on execution. It's working for now.

I carry 4 wood or 18 degree utility iron at top of bag. Definitely use the 18 more, so typically 4 wood stays I car.

Since driver is favorite club in bag,  only time I don’t hit it is when distance issue.

I dropped my m5 3w and replaced it with a cobra LTDx ls 5w at 17.5, turned down to 16.5.  I probably carry it the same as my 3w, but it stops faster, I can take some off, hit it low, high, cut or draw.  My mizuno 3 Fli-hi will run out almost as far as 5w, but probably further chased down a fairway off the tee. Working well for me and cobra is a great 5w

This is turning out to be a good bag setup for me. I really like having only one fairway wood. It’s doing everything I need it to do.

Went from TS3 3w to TSi2 16.5. Use it more often as it is more reliable from the fairway. If more than 250 on an approach, probably chipping anyway so might as well hit a controlled wedge from the fairway on a layup instead of who knows what kind of lie from near the green.

Yes, not WRX like to lay up but save a couple shots with a close wedge a round more than hitting a 250 yd approach with a makeable putt.

Man, I must be getting old!

Hmm, while reading through the thread, the thing that kept going through my mind was that the reason I have a 4 wood in the bag and am not carrying my 3 wood is because I've just given up on hitting reliably from 250 yards out.  I'm wondering for how many people that is the case...

Huh?  I basically just said I'd bailed on hitting my 3 wood for long approaches...  That's why I play a 4 wood.  Not following you.

That was a weird response. Maybe a language barrier or something...

With the changes in golf balls in early 2000s, went to a bit more loft in fairway and driver to achieve flight and distances I desired.

My apologies.  I read it wrong and was suffering a temporary language barrier.
