I bet Sergio had some seasons that looked similar statistically. I’m pretty sure he finished dead last in putting when he won the 2008 Players Championship

Didn't someone put up a stat that if Scotty could putt like Tiger then he would have Tigeresque win results?  I love watching Scotty play but dread watching him on on the greens.

As I have shamelessly bumped my own thread today, it occurred to me that the initial post was of course a joke, no one was actually worried about his putting back then.

Scottie should try the Rafael Campos approach to putting. It couldn't hurt.

Campos' wild week doesn't end there. The 35-year-old is playing this week with a rental putter from the nearby par-3 course after his normal putter broke ahead of the first round. "It feels pretty good, I won't lie," he said.

 

All that has put Campos in a good position entering the weekend. Starting his second round on the back nine, he birdied the par-5 12th and holed birdie putts of 28 and 17 feet on Nos. 14 and 15, respectively. Campos shot a 4-under round of 67. He is 5-under overall.

 

Campos SG Putting 1st round - 1.72 - 19th

Campos SG Putting 2nd round - .261 - 57th

At the time of this post (3rd round) Campos is 25th in SG putting with a rental putter.

Since either the late part of 2022 or the start of last year through the WMO he had high 200s strokes gained on the field excluding putting IIRC. He's gained 2-3 strokes on the field per round every round for going on two years now. He could be middle of the pack in putting and he'd still be having a Tigeresque time of it.

doesnt this assume that all the work he's putting into ball striking wouldnt be drastically effected by the effort needed to make him even a decent putter ;}

What I don't get is why he doesn't at least try (maybe he is in private and we will never know) a stroke that wouldn't have any crossover with his other mechanics - armlock, claw, broom etc.

I mean, have other top players who turned around their putting suddenly gone to crap elsewhere in their game? Rory's full swing certainly didn't fall apart while he was somewhat improving under different coaches or finally getting it together when he switched away from a blade. If he'd get a decent caddie capable of reading putts and that he trusts to help him in the clutch moments he'd likely be even better.

 

If you can point to specific examples of anyone in the top 50 or so at any time who's crashed and burned in the rest of their game by getting their putting together I'm happy to concede your point.

i'm not sure i can name anyone thats dramatically improved their putting to begin with.

He wouldn't even have to dramatically improve. If he could just be mediocre enough to stop burning the edge or lipping out from 3 or 4 feet he'd be fine. Getting used to an equipment change would likely be enough for that. 

 

Realistically even just something like a center shafted putter may be enough, but he needs to try something. Still don't see anything suggesting the minimal effort it would take to switch his putting practice to putter searching being a detriment to the rest of his game. I'm sure what his current putting does to his nerves & attitude is far worse in that regard.

The putting is a mental thing. 

 

Scheffler needs to research an athlete of the past that was highly successful in his field and overcame the seemingly impossible.  I suggest former world record holder, Dick Buerkle. RIP

Nope….while he lost 0.077 strokes per round on average in 2008 he gained 0.381 in his Players victory.
