My new homemade* putter

The last putter I made worked really well but I was getting the itch to make another homemade (* made using the 5-axis machines at work) putter. I wanted to add some weights to be able to alter the overall weight for faster/slower greens.

Designed this one on MasterCAM and machined on our Bridgeport 5-axis VMC out of cold rolled 304 stainless steel.

351g with light weights

371g with heavy weights

3° loft, 72° lie

Approx 4 o'clock toe hang

What do you think?

Not my style, but craftmanship looks excellent! I'd love to see a Newport style with flow neck from you.

Not quite my style either but like the mid-mallet/blade shape you came up with and the work definitely looks quality. Would be cool to see you mill some other shape/styles for yourself in the future.

Yeah man, pretty impressive work. I'm not sure why all of us (including me) are wanting something besides a plumber's neck on that sucker. Could by our assumptions/prejudices concerning mallet vs. blade putters.

 

Just out of curiosity, the only part of that model that is standing out as "slightly funky" is the connection between the neck and the body of the putter. I would be expecting a weld there to smooth out the connection a little. Are you using epoxy or a mechanical connection?

I've used epoxy on it for now as this is a prototype. Hopefully I'll get a chance to machine a flow neck so, with the epoxy, it's easier to change over to try a different neck.

The hosel is interesting. Is it welded to the neck, and am I right in thinking the hosel piece has grooves cut into the side? Is that for any particular purpose, or just for aesthetics (to match those on the neck)?

Yes, the hosel is welded to the neck. It's an easy way to make it with different lie angles as I can machine the location to exactly any angle. Grooves in the hosel are just aesthetic, tried to make it a bit more interesting rather than just a plain neck & hosel.

My only critique would be that it looks like the neck kind of overhangs the topline? Just something to think about on the next one because you'd never be able to tell this is your first effort.

What if that's exactly what he wanted? Not everyone wants offset on their putters.

I really like everything about this putter. I play an older Squareback  so this design really appeals to me. I also like the way you did the plumber's neck. I  like a heavier putter so the weights you added are something I like. Very clean looking. Great job!

He could be going for different toe hang too. 

 

But to my eyes all plumber necks look awful, the worst neck for a putter but everyone is different in what they like and if this is perfect to OP then it's perfect to him and not others.

I would game that! If it was a righty..... Nice work, I like that mid mallet shape. It would probably fit my game better but I refuse to not play a blade. 

 

Also the fact that you can add weights to your homemade putter is some serious skills. Makes you 1000% better than some of those overpriced "artisan" putters.... *cough cough* Swag.. *cough* Kraken..... *cough*

Hosel slots look perfect for tritium vials. Probably couldn’t see it in daylight but if you ever play at night…Imagine that!

It is, marginally, cut into the radius on the back of the top line. Not perfect but I'm OK with it.

I get the dislike for the plumber's neck but it's what I know how to make. I'll be looking at a flow neck at some point as it's an easy change. At the moment it feels right..

Kraken is nothing like swag. He makes his stuff and much more limited and better quality

Made a couple of slight changes as I was getting a bit of glare on sunny days so gave the visible-at-address faces a light bead blast and knocked up a copper insert for the rear. Adds about 15g but I can counteract that by popping the lighter weights into the sole.

Not sure I agree with your Imperial stormtrooper design for a ball marker, seeing as those guys missed everything🤣
