I read the complaint as well and I think it is likely to succeed on its merits. In my professional opinion several of the charges are slam-dunk wins for Reed, especially the hostile work environment complaint, for which the complaint is especially strong.

I hope Reed wins to shut Chamblee up. Not sure how someone that wins 1 time on tour can talk about or to anyone like that. Yeah, I'll put up with Johnny Miller, he had the game to back it up, but Chamblee is a self proclaimed golf guru who barely hung on for his career. Remember, Chamblee was warned in the past for this but didn't listed. I'm no Reed fan, but Jesus, Chamblee needs to give it up. He is like a 5 year old wanting a toy in Wal Mart.

Chamblee also called Tiger a cheater and Tiger shut him up pretty fast. Chamblee is a talking head who's only attribute is being controversial. He is in no way insightful or clever and just takes up space. Again, there is only so much you can bash someone over and make accusations until you have to provide proof. He cheated on camera. There is clear video evidence of one incident, and pretty damn convincing evidence of a second.

What's interesting is of you click through to the GolfWeek article, you see this:

A third party who happens to be a professor of sports law has said what many of us (including me) have said in this thread: Chamblee's statements regarding Reed are opinions and not demonstrable false statements of fact. Which means it is not legally defamation. 

 

Reed's suit is like Chamblee coming after you for saying he's like a 5 year old wanting a toy in Walmart and defending himself on the basis that he is, in fact, 60 years old and therefore you, cardia10, have defamed him.

Chamblee is a commentator. It doesn't matter how many wins he has. So according to you Bob Costas shouldn't comment about sports? And none of us here should discuss golf? P Reed is a cheater and for Golf that is big.

Watching the tournament this past week, every close up I saw showed guys placing their club behind the ball in the rough pressing down the grass to improve contact on the back of the ball. Chamblee has picked the battles against Reed selectively while letting others slide. Tiger showed Chamblee where he could stick it and if others would refuse interviews until Chamblee is taken care of, this wouldn't be an issue. He is the typical bully but people get all up in arms when the bully gets punched for some reason. Reed isn't a likeable golfer or person but that shouldn't subject him to repeated abuse. It gets old fast and is classless. I'm sorry, but again, brushing sand in the backswing is wrong, but to call that blatant cheating is questionable as we don't know the intent. We can guess but only one person knows that answer and it isn't Chamblee.

Chamblee's golf legend isn't big enough for his own mind so he tries to create it with his mouth. He wasn't a top tier player and isn't a top tier commentator. Again, I hope he loses. If you bully someone for so long, you deserve whatever comes your way.

cardia, I get that you're not a Chamblee fan; I'm not either. But Reed has a documented history of cheating involving more than accidentally brushing sand that began years ago when he was in college. Unless you believe that 2 different groups of teammates at 2 different colleges are all liars.

There are a lot of bullies on the TV. 

 

But defamation has a relatively clear legal standard. If Chamblee hasn't met it, then there's not much you can do about it. 

 

Everyone wants to cheer when a bully gets punched. But if the bully wasn't an immediate threat to whoever punches them, it's called assault.

Social media has made everyone comfortable being a desktop bully. Chamblee is part of that group. If nothing else, I hope the lawyer fees and waste of time is enough to shut him up. Reed lives rent free in his head for some reason. Reed has an uphill legal battle to prove but if he wins, it will change the landscape of how announcers continually antagonize players that aren’t even competing in a given week. The broken records of announcers will stop and they will have to think of something original instead of “he is just a cheater because college kids say so.”
