Guy caught stealing golf bags at Denver International Airport

Don't know if anyone has seen this article about the theft of golf bags at DIA:

Nice to see a bag thief get his comeuppance, but what surprised me was that the guy is accused of stealing eight golf bags with equipment worth $41,699 dollars. That's an average of over $5,000 per bag. I think I only spent about $1,000 on mine. I need to up my game.

Surprised it doesn’t happen more often. You never know where your golf bag is going to be in baggage claim at DIA.  I’m sure many sit unattended for lengthy periods of time while the owner frantically searchs (as me how I know)!

Hopefully they got their gear back and the police aren’t holding on to everything.

I suspect it happens quite frequently, just that no one ever gets caught for it. I've only brought clubs on an international flight once (and it was just a single wedge and a driver shaft; the head I removed and put in my suitcase). I was reunited safely with them at the other end, but I've read stories from people who weren't so lucky.

The article didn't say whether the accused was a baggage handler or similar airport worker. I'd like to have known that detail.

My brother-in-law has a business where he buys from OEMs and gives quotes to insurance companies on club losses.

The stuff people claim which was in their bags when a loss occurs is pure comedy.

$5,000 probably isn't as outlandish as it sounds. For example, this is my bag....

Bag itself = $300

Driver = $600

3 wood = $300

Hyrbrid = $350

Irons = $1,200

Wedges = $350

Putter = $700 (it's an original SC TeI3 so it's priceless to me but the value is most likely around $700)

Rangefinder = $250

Balls/gloves/misc. = $100

All in that is just a hair under $4,000 and I'm not exactly carrying a brand new model of everything.

Ummm, yeah, i had a faberge egg in there....

If i went through every bag at my club i'd bet 99% of them are under 5K

I'll give you $30 for the Cameron.  🤣🤣

Seriously, I have an SC Tei3 Newport Longneck.  I understand your attachment to it.

I've had it happen twice.  Once was an international flight into YWG and it was an accidental mixup with both bags being Club Glove bags (although mine was far heavier and said "Titleist" on the bag).  I was stranded waiting to clear customs and the other guy was already in a cab when I called him.  Fortunately, he had his contact info on his bag.

Second time was a clear case of theft.  It was a domestic flight and I noticed right away that the oversized luggage door had already closed and my bag wasn't there.  I ran to the exit and caught the guy waiting for a ride.  Grabbed my bag and said some really bad words and left him there.  Should've called the cops, but told him to beat it and went to get my other bags.

Edit: with clubs bag, shoes, balls and whatever else I stuffed in the travel bag, it's likely in excess of $3500 Cdn.  $5k US is a stretch.

Travel bags also contain lots of gear for said golf trip, so golf shoes, headcovers, clothing, the actual travel bag, stiff arm, rangefinder, rain gear, miscellaneous others. And while I didn't pay close to 5k for my current bag, the replacement cost could come pretty close considering current prices. But admittedly I've never gone through the process.

FYI, Airtags provide a big help in this IMO.

I'll add that every time I go to Bandon I have this same thought. Last time I just walked in and got my clubs from the Ship Sticks area, nobody asked or questioned me, anybody could've done it.

I suppose there are guys who even loiter at baggage claims for grab and dash opportunities.  I had no problem stencilling my travel bag in large, bright-colored letters with my initials and numbers (the year of my first car).  It wouldn't stop a determined thief I suppose, but might give hesitation to most.  Worked so far.

Some guys at my club keep a few k in cash in their bags at all times when they want a high stakes schlong measuring contest after a few too many tequila shots during those friday afternoon money games.

I was advised that when travelling with your clubs,  to use an inexpensive travel cover as an expensive one screams out "steal me".

And an inexpensive one screams "break me" to baggage handlers lol

Anyone stealing bags should be hit in the nuts with a 2 iron.

I disagree.  A 9 iron will loft the nuts higher into the neck

I disagree with both--- A butter knife 1 iron will do the trick cuts as it hits

I guess I was thinking that the 2 iron would maximize ball speed.

I'm with you.  The only way my bag would be worth over five grand is if I kept a couple of krugerrands in it as ball markers.

That's what I was wondering. As every club in my bag is over 3 years old, I can't see insurance paying out full retail price.

Those baggage handler positions are extremely high turnover. Not unusual for someone to last a couple of weeks or less in one of those positions (especially in Denver).

You can always FedEx your bag, but either way, a cleverly hidden Apple air tag is not a bad idea.
