I'm originally from Chicago, played in Eskimo Opens a few times, played in snow with frozen solid greens....that's when I was young and dumb.

 

Just a bit south of OP, suggestions as if the course is open, we play...

 

- dress in layers

- nothing like a GoreTex Windstopper outerlayer, though if it's cold and really windy we might skip that day

- find some low compression balls you like, or can call acceptable

- expect 2-3 club delta from summer temps

- mostly have fun, cuz we know Spring, Summer and Fall are coming

Callaway winter gloves have a slot for hot pockets. They work great.

This was a round last year. It started to snow on the third hole. The picture was on the fourth green, we played maximum two putts until the snow melted on the ninth hole. The back nine was fine. The only challenge was the buildup of ice on my Clic Gear wheels. I am the handsome dude on the left.

Down to play tomorrow and Sunday. However it is minus 9 at the moment and snow / sleet forecast for Sunday. Plan B may involve beer.

I took the day off to play on Wednesday because of freezing rain and predicted colder temps through this weekend. It was 37-39* with a stiff breeze early. Fairly high on the "miserable scale". Started at 11:40 and chilly through the first 7-8 holes. Then warmed up to 40-43* later in the round. Finished about dark and it got back to chilly on the last two holes. 

 

For me, it all depends on the ground and if it gets below freezing overnight. I hate hitting into concrete greens and I like to be able to put a peg in the ground.

 

On Wednesday, there was about an inch of semi-frozen ground and then purchase underneath - like if you forced a tee through that first layer - it was soft underneath.

 

But, the greens never thawed - meaning you had to take a big bounce into account. As a result, I was short all day long.

 

I might play Saturday, we will see what happens.

Same here. Played 18 yesterday in Michigan. Comfortable 42 degrees and light wind. Probably the last round for 2022 in Michigan.  Not a bad golf season at all to play until Dec 15!

In the Boston area, as long as there isn't snow on the ground there are some courses open.  Most courses close once it snows but again there a few that stay open during the fall and winter.  You really need to walk in colder weather to keep warmer and combining that with layers of clothing, softer golf balls and hand warmers and it's usually fine.  Don't have any high expectations on scoring though as the ball can bounce, plug, etc anywhere on the course - I really just try to good swings, good contact and a good quiet walk.

 

Also I prefer Mizuno or Callaway winter golf gloves (the FJ version is too thick for my liking) combined with mittens on my Clicgear cart, and I also bring an ice pick with me in order to get a tee in the frozen ground.

12 and -11 on Thursday and 1 and -5 on Friday.

 

Warms up nicely on Saturday though - 12 and 2!

 

But then again "only" five inches of snow between now and then.

Yeah, I got lucky for the weekend in question in that it was actually planned to be a getaway which we cancelled, so I already had Friday off work. I played that Friday and then was supposed to play Sunday, but the rain on Sunday was pretty rough in the morning. So at least I got out once in the "weekend"... 

 

This weekend looks beautiful. 76 Saturday and 79 Sunday. Too bad golf will be interrupted by Christmas. Ugh!

 

Supposed to play next Wednesday, but right now the forecast is showing rain again. Hoping it's a typical SoCal forecast where a week out it's dire, and then every day we get closer it looks less and less like rain will be a reality.

The Eddie Bauer lined Ranier pant is excellent.

 

Haven't wanted to take 'em off the last few days in this cold.

 

Water repellent and seem to do a good job of blocking the wind.

The best thing to do for practice and playing in the winter is....... wait until after 9am when temps are over 60*.  Then again you can wait til noon and avoid the crowds and it's even warmer!!

That stated, you also mentioned practice suggestions. Find a simulator. They are everywhere now days. If you have space means and desire, get your own.

Played end of last week and it was high 30s/ 40s. No golf now with temps around 10 degrees.  Going back up to around 40s end of this coming week so hopefully can get out again.  Tough time of year, but thankfully no snow in Boston area from this latest storm, just lots of rain and wind.

Played in snow like that a few years ago with some friends and had a blast.
 

The part that we all still talk about is putting. As your ball rolled, it would pick up a donut ring of snow around it. Then as it would stop rolling it would sort of topple to one side or the other. We had a couples putts “fall” into the hole like this and needless to say were going nuts. 
 

I think one of the biggest keys to playing in winter or really crappy weather is having a good group of guys (or gals) to play with. I’d tee it up in a blizzard or a hurricane to play with my buddies!
