Request to stay out of a player's shank zone.

If you learned how to play ready golf with professional caddies you know where to stand

No one should have to be requested to stay out of a players shank zone. There's not one good reason to ever be there. 

 

I've read this entire thread and no one has said anything to make me think different.

No one who has golfed with me for very long would ever stand in the shank zone!  Actually I don't think that anyone who has played for very long would ever stand or sit in a cart in any average hacks shank zone as we have all seen enough hosel rockets and also driver / hybrid / fairway shots off the toe end of the club to know that it is a really stupid thing to do.  

 

I have read that Bobby Jones was afraid that he might kill someone if he shanked a shot as folks were really close to him on a lot of shots, as I remember it this was supposedly a contributing factor in his decision to retire.  I know that I am a bit nervous when I end up in a spot like that at a pro tournament even though the risk is infinitesimal in that case.

I agree. I play regularly with 3 better players. I always hit last and usually further back. If we walk, they are always in front of me and it is a general nervousness. I had yet to hit someone but it is always in my head.

The last two posts highlight why it's not just a safety issue but an etiquette one too.  People who do this don't seem to understand how much it can unnerve their playing partners.

If you’ve never battled a case of the shanks, especially severe ones, you’ll never understand the trepidation of standing over the ball with someone slightly ahead and to the right.

Yes, voice of experience. I spent one summer playing an old laminated 5 wood all around the course. Wasn’t a fun summer.

My dad used to carry a 2 iron that he loved but only actually hit the thing decent about 10% of the time. I was 30 yards ahead of him and well off to the right when he fired a hosel rocket straight at me. 
 

Things went into slow motion like I was back in Iraq. I could see the dimples on the ball spinning. I felt like Neo from the Matrix as I expertly ducked under the ball… and fell back into a mud puddle. 
 

I don’t stand in the shank zone anymore.

Nothing wrong with asking anybody to move,  especially for their safety.   Your friend however, needs to work on his mental game.

We all could stand to work on our mental game.

 

But no one should have to deal with another golfer walking up in front them on their right. IMHO, that's just poor golf etiquette and is nothing more than being inconsiderate of your fellow golfer. You really shouldn't have to ask anyone to not do it. 

 

There's a guy in my regular group who does every round 2 or 3 times and, to make it worse, he doesn't even turn around and look at us while we're hitting. And we have a 25 handicapper in our group who is good for 2-3 shanks a round. We've told him and told him and told him to no avail. Like someone once said, you can't fix stupid.

If he's gonna stand in the shank zone, he definitely doesn't want to be looking back. Better to take one in the neck than right in the mush!

If you move ahead of me(more common every day) I simply say heads up or watch youself, after that it’s 100% on you and my mind is clear
