7 yards of roll with a wedge?

Golf labs test on a range not a green. Most important thing to see is it’s comparable to other balls tested.

So one thing I been wondering about is when does the original Prov1 patent expire?  Patents only last 20 years and someone is bound to copy a prov1 soon. Not sure if this is one but I thought I heard 2023 is when knock off prov1 could be sold.

With dimple pattern and being a 3 layer backed up with data on their site it may be the first knockoff prov1.  It probably is not a knockoff but would be exciting if it was.

The next question is who is making this ball. Pretty sure they didn't make a factory for this ball.

Titleist does not have a patent on 3 or 4 piece golf balls with a urethane cover. There are literally hundreds of golf balls on the market with that same construction. In fact, Spalding were the first company to produce a multilayer urethane covered ball.

As of today they're available in stores and will be used as their main ball for fittings. Feel great! Solid, not harsh, at contact like a Srixon Z-Star Diamond or Vice Pro Plus, yet very soft off my putter which is the feeling I like. I also like the alignment aids on the side.

From what I have read the golf ball market in the US was $1.3 Billion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a 5+% CAGR.  Titleist and Callaway are the dominant players, but if PXG can capture 1% of the market that would be an astounding $13 million dollars in additional revenue.

My real hope is that at $40/box they keep enough pressure on ProV's to bring the price down a bit.

What’s the point in making a ball with 20 year old technology? The pro v1 has changed a decent amount since then, would be much easier to do some simple R&D for a 3 piece ball and dimple pattern using current materials.

They’re in Scottsdale with 75 mph wedge swing…..have you ever played out there?

No... like I said, I've played pretty much exclusively on the east coast.  Furthest west I've ever played is Baton Rouge.  But, I've seen plenty of tour events all over the country where the pros are getting tons of roll on their drives and having trouble holding greens so I know these conditions can happen.

For what it is worth, the PGA tour average swing speed for a PW, according to the TrackMan chart, is 83 mph, so it isn't like PXG's 75 mph test is a bump and run.

Most of the innovation is how the ball is manufactured and the big advance was the first ball.  The changes are just small since then and probably not that big of deal.

the PXG Xtreme is three-piece ball with an injection-molded 338-dimple aerodynamics package (aka “cover”). The balls are produced in Vietnam.

Almost certainly in the same facility that Kirklands are made.

Can't imagine them ever lowering the price of ProV's unless sales somehow slipped which seems very unlikely. Besides, just take advantage of the buy 3 get 1 free deal every spring. Brings them down to 41 bucks a doz, right in line with the PXGs.

Availability, pricing

PXG Xtreme Golf Balls are now available at PXG retail stores, PXG.com, and over the phone with PXG Player Support. They will also be sold on Amazon starting in March.

Makes me wonder what they're actually trying to accomplish.  Out of curiosity, looked to see where they were -- seem to have at least 1 store-based fitting location in/near every large and mid-size US city.  Plus at some private golf clubs.  But that's about it.

Golf balls are very low-margin products, so you need to sell a lot of them to make any money.  You would think they would try to get their golf balls into all retail locations and golf courses, to try to drive more interest in the rest of their products.

Doing it the way they are, it looks like they're just targeting their own existing customers to make a low volume of sales on a low-margin product.  Plus Amazon, but it's probably going to be most of those same customers who just want to buy 1 box with free shipping instead of buying 3 boxes to get free shipping direct from PXG.

Maybe there's a larger plan in the works, but doing it this way doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.  As I've seen from a bunch of the comments here, people are curious, but not curious enough to spend about the same as a dozen ProV's just to try them out.

I disagree. I think it takes more than just one quality premium ball to get a lot of tour guys to play it… it takes years of consistently proving that ball and brand is reliable. We still see callaway and TM struggle to get some of their pros to switch into their ball.

Look how fast Brooks ditched Srixon balls to go back to his ProVIx.

Not to mention, the margins on golf balls are HUGE! For the manufacturer, not the retailer.

And Justin Rose, Bryson, Pat Reed, Bubba and all of the Nike equipment guys basically just went back to Titleist.

~90% of the top ams play titleist. Almost every kid grows up playing junior golf with a titleist. That kind of goodwill is hard to replicate in the short term.

I just ordered 3 dozen for $109.17 with the heroes discount. My next round will be at RTJ Capitol Hill in about 10 days.  I have only played three times in 2023 so I expect to lose a few.

It will interesting to hear how these work out for you.

Brings up an interesting question too....  Before all the major retailers like Golf Galaxy and PGA Tour Superstore start carrying them, will they be manufactured in the factory in Scottsdale and ship from there? Or will they ship from the closest PXG retail store to your location?

Just curious since that could be a week wait for a dozen balls (including $7.50 shipping) when you can just walk into target or academy and grab a dozen Pro Vs for about the same price.......

The article I read stated PXG direct, available in their stores and starting in March, from Amazon.

Ball looks nice, looking forward to receiving the box i ordered and trying them out.  I'm certainly not paying $55 box now for Prov1.  I think only time I'll play the new Prov's is if I get one in my gift bag at an outing.   Cant wait to beat my golf buddy's with PXG ball and keep taking their money.

Buy 3 get 1 free from Titleist starts back up in March. Makes them 42 bucks a box.

Golf balls have huge margins, they cost next to nothing to manufacture, and they sell for a bunch.

Interesting marketing strategy paying golf labs (who are known to find results that benefit who is paying them) to compare them to ProV1.

I’m not saying this can’t be a good product at the price point but does anyone knowledgeable really think this is comparable with a ProV1 in terms of performance or overall quality?

This is really competing with other D2C balls which is where the story really is.
