So what is his gap wedge?

He doesn’t use a gap wedge usually. Looks like he’s using his Rors Proto P wedge not the MG3 46 he’d been using.

What has me curious is that TM has the ability to grind/mill wedges. They could easily scan his Vokey wedges and make exact replicas. Would be very interesting to hear why he went back to Vokeys.

If it is 12 then his gap would be a taylormade. If it is a 10 it is probly a vokey. Also wonder what his next non taylormade club would be.

Rory as of late has only played 2 wedges which the last 2 tournaments were vokeys but his pw is from his set then 54 then 58-60 since it’s varied.

I may be talking out my arse here but...

I've seen the TaylorMade tour truck tour with Wade and he has his grinder tucked away in an unused corner hidden behind a roller door. His idea was kinda "why the hell would I use that? I can just give the guys the same thing every time from the drawer with no guess work". Which tells me they don't have a ton of experience grinding wedges on the range, while Arron Dill actually sleeps with his grinder. Maybe Rory wanted something that the TM wedges didn't give him and it's just easier and more consistent to get it from Dill on the Titleist truck.

Thing is now that they mill their wedges from a blanks they literally can make Rory whatever he wants. A person doesn’t even need to anything but load it into the milling machine.

Whoa. Lot of moving parts in his bag for sure. My suspicion is he visits the Kingdom one good time while on this Westcoast swing and dials things down. I would like to see the new P7MBs in his bag this year!

So far from what I can see:

1. Tinkering with combo set at the top. He's one of the few that's stayed blades all the way up for awhile.

2. Tinkering Stealth2, and to also see an 8g weight on the front slide track where normally comes with 15g. Where's he moving the weight, esp as he tends to like a heavier sw in his drivers.

3. Wedges. Part of me thinks, "don't break what ain't broke" aka "I just won with these in a desert, let's roll"

I think he finds the Stealth2 really good for him this year. He had a really good breakout run with the SIM that this Stealth2 is close to.

Not many guys go from 46 or 47 to 55… almost like a guy leaving an 8 iron out in a set… wonder if this set up allows him to keep 3 iron or if he prefers the simple set up of only 3 wedges as he used to play 4.

True story. Simply take a 3D scan of the Vokey, upload it into the milling machine and voilà! Also interested to know why they wouldn’t do, or at least try that??? Maybe they did.

I had the same thought. Why do non staffers keep playing vokeys? I imagine the wedge guy on any truck should be able to make anything. It's a wedge. There is only so much you can do with it. Not to diminish Aaron Dill's craftsmanship and expertise, but in the age of digital measurements, what gives? Are vokey blanks or grooves that much better? Just curious

He’s had 3 wedges for a while now from what I remember. I’d assume he likes the simplicity and likes to keep the 3i in.

I’ve taken my gap wedge out because I didn’t use it that much and wanted a 3i for off the tee.

The 8 gram weight and the 15 gram weight have a 3 gram slider weight underneath. The tour heads have a lot of hot melt. Swing weights at anything longer than 45.25 really heavy. 8 gram weight probably gets him to right around d4 at 45.5 finished. Also, I think a lot of these guys will play these in upright settings and they’ll get along really well with them. I tried both the old head and new head the other day and the new one feels a lot better once you get it dialed in.

Article on Rory's gear changes right from Rory.

“This is my first year of my new deal with TaylorMade, and they gave me just a little bit of flexibility with some of the clubs that I can play,” McIlroy said on Wednesday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. “So that was really it. I was messing around with Justin [Thomas’ wedges] — I see Justin Thomas all the time at home and messing around with some of his wedges and some of the grinds he has. I got in touch and ordered a couple, and they’ve worked really nicely.”

McIlroy didn’t comment on how much flexibility his new deal offers, but it’s likely 2-3 clubs in the bag, which is similar to many of his peers. In recent years, equipment manufacturers have become more willing to let players use a couple of clubs from competitors, provided the large majority of their setup remains with the brand cutting the checks.

McIlroy actually isn’t the only TaylorMade staffer with gear flexibility. Scottie Scheffler, Tommy Fleetwood and Tiger Woods all have at least one non-TaylorMade club in the bag. (Collin Morikawa is playing 14 TaylorMade clubs at the moment.)
