Driver with the best sound/feel?

hlca

Recommended Posts

Using the Cobra LTDx and it's the worst feeling and sounding driver I've ever hit when I'm not on the center.  That said, it performs better and is more forgiving than my prior Cobra F9 when off center and that's really all that matters.

I've actually hit some drivers where after contact...I'm like...dang it...I missed that one bad.  But the ball still gets out way out there, and when I look at the face, the ball mark is maybe only a half inch left or right from dead center.  Anything a half inch higher than dead center sounds like I hit the ball with a frying pan, but it still performs within my expectations for that type of contact.

It really caught me off guard when I first hit it...but I quickly got over it as my driving is better than ever.

the word around wrx says paradym triple diamond with ventus has the most crisp/solid feeling atm. I haven't got to try the heads out yet, but a close second would be the og sim

This is so subjective and personal.

I've played a Ping driver for a long time. Still playing the G30 which I purchased when they were first released.

Picked up a used ST-Z 220 head not too long ago, and the difference in sound is stark. The Mizuno is so quiet compared to the Ping I'm used to, that I thought something was wrong with it.

Can't say I have a strong preference for a specific sound, but I am very used to a loud Ping driver. It's definitely an adjustment going to a much quieter driver.

For sh*ts and giggles I grabbed a TM BRNR mini driver to horse around with and am impressed with its sound and feel.  This coming from a longtime Titleist driver guy.

My favorite of all time has been the Callaway Epic Flash. The newer drivers seem to be muted in the Callaway line up. I still like to hear some noise with my driver. Maybe I need a hearing aid.

The G400 doesn't fit this.  One of the best feeling and sounding drivers in my opinion.  Along with the TS3 when hit on the screws.

The number of people saying TSR2 is baffling to me.  Was messing around with a demo head yesterday and although I quite liked the performance, the sound was not appealing.

Anyone who has ever hit a persimmon driver has entered the chat.

But talking about modern stuff, for me it's either the TS4 or my old Covert Tour 1.0.

Yes please, nothing beats a center hit on these. More folks should try it when out for a few holes.

They have been sneaking the volume down for a while.... i just made the switch from a diablo octane (09) to a big bertha fusion (16) and its a very noticeable sound level difference....but i love the shound of the fusion, has a nice crack remeniscent of a persimmon, with a touch of ting of the titanium face... very pleasing to MY ears at least...

If you think the 220 is "quiet", wait until you try the 230. I have all three Mizuno ST drivers, and while they all perform similarly, the 230 is definitely and distinctly more muted than the previous two ST models.

The Cobra L4V (circa 2008 ?) was the absolute loudest and worst-sounding driver I've ever hit/heard.

Some think the Ping G400 was as bad and the G425 only slightly better than the 400. While both those drivers weren't nearly quiet, they weren't as bad as the Cobra.

The current G430 is mile quieter; darn near "muted". 👍

No-one considers the G400 worse than the 425.
The  G400 standard and LST actually saw Ping working specifically on improving the sound. The 425 was considered a step back.

Having used the G400 LST, G425 Max and LST and just now the G430 Max the G400 was absolutely better than the 425 and the 430 is back on track.

I enjoy the impact sound of my 220. I plan to someday buy a 230, and it's good to learn the sound is as good or better than the 220. Thanks.

Read the whole thread and I'm disappointed.

Evidently you guys forgot about the Bridgestone J33.

How can you forget that baseball bat "thwack" at impact.

@jj9000 Would you recommend the J33R 460cc... or the 420cc?
I've heard so many good things about the J33's sound ... that i recently bought one for ~$30!

(460cc pear shaped 10.5 degree head paired with Aldila RIP alpha 60 stiff shaft)

Surprisingly forgiving!

I've heard that the J33R's muted thwack is due to a 'turbo rubber' butt plug

... i.e. perhaps this turbo-rubber plug =  provided some inspiration for the elastomer that PXG uses as weight/dampening for PXG drivers?
