The Genesis Invitational 2024

After a week of debauchery in the desert, the PGA Tour returns to the familiar surroundings of Riviera Country Club. Expect a less raucous atmosphere and more focus on the golf which I suspect even those that love the Waste Management will be keen to get into. Of course, the return of a certain Eldrick Tont Tiger Woods will mean that there is certain to be a high degree of anticipation as we head into Thursday and all eyes will be on TW to see how his game, fitness and clothing looks as he begins his 2024 season. As ever with Tiger it can never be said that he doesn't stand a chance heading into the week but safe to say he will have to go some to overcome what is a talent laden field. Last year's winner will not return as he is busy with his new venture to "grow the game" but the remainder of the Top 10 in the World will be present. That said with a stacked field behind them, even they will need to go some if the wish to get a handshake from Tiger come Sunday afternoon.

Genuinely excited for this. The venue and the field are great. A serious tournament.

My home turf. Such a fun tournament. Riviera is one of the best places in the world to follow players around. LA spectators don't drink excessively either. We need to watch our carb counts.

I still vividly remember Tiger's first pro tournament teeing off as a 16yr at Riviera.  Crazy it's been that long and what a ride.    Such an iconic golf course.

As much as I like Riviera, I would love to see the course a little later in the year. Its usually kinda winter barren, that last par three hole, those trees and all that. Still, 10 is great, 18 is great and the field is… decent.

So 71 players, the cut is set at Top 50 and ties, and anyone within 10 shots of the lead.

US open is coming to Riv in 2031!

One of my favorite courses/events on the tour schedule. So many iconic holes and winners. Hope Riviera plays firm/fast because that’s when it’s at its best.

They've had an extreme amount of rain.  The article I read this morning mentioned the first day or two could potentially have softer conditions than normal.

The one constant through all the years has been Tiger Woods.  America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers.  It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But Tiger has marked the time. This course, this game, is a part of our past.  It reminds us of all that once was good, and what could be again.

Any advice for first-timers to a golf tournament, specifically this one? 

 

My 16 yo son and his grandpa from his mom's side* will be going on Sunday. He's a soph on his HS golf team so he understands the sport. As I understand it, they have tickets for the 17th hole... I don't know what sort of access that grants you beyond actually being at your assigned area, nor do I know whether they're assigned seats... 

 

Assuming they have roaming privileges, I would think maybe the goal is to try to get there early, check out a few holes / follow a group or two, and then by the time the contenders are starting to reach the back 9 to find their way to the 17th? 

 

Weather is potentially rainy--should I suggest they wear golf shoes for traction if that's in the forecast?

Sounds like a good suggestion. 

 

Me:

Depending on how much time I'll be spending there. I like to know where my favorite player(s) are teeing off and follow them for at least 4-5 holes, switching to some others after that. With tickets to the 17th hole on a Sunday I'd probably want to see at least the last 6-7 groups, assuming the leaders are a part of them.

 

Golf shoes... I've seen more than a few threads over the years, folks ridiculing folks that wear them... which I think is silly. Either way, make sure whatever they wear are waterproof if it's going to be wet.

Of course, I went straight to the footnote - do you dare venture advice? My experience is it probably depends on the shoes. Pro SL types? No. Beyond that any sensible sneakers or golf shoe equivalent would be fine and comfortable.
