Best Golf Ball in Wind

Recommended Posts

I'm a Vice Pro / Maxfli Tour fanboy.  However, yesterday, had 20mph coming in off the water on Long Island and the way it was coming in spent the whole day in either a crosswind or headwind.  Had a drive that started on the left side of the fairway and blew about 30-40 yards right off the fairway.  Happened to everyone in the foursone.

Question is what ball in the Vice or Maxfli lineup or other DTC or OEM would be a good ball to play on "Breezy" days? What characteristics should I be looking for?

There are certainly limits to how well a ball can resist blowing sideways in a crosswind. You may have encountered a situation where that was simply going to happen no matter what.

In my limited wind-play experience I found the Chrome Soft X LS to be pretty amazingly wind resistant, compared to the Pro V1, Pro V1x, Tour BX balls I have used a lot over the years. I didn't particularly care for CSXLS overall but on a windy day it held its line pretty darned well.

Vice Pro Plus is in my rotation of balls and it does ok in the wind.  MTB-X was the best wind ball I've ever played, but no longer available.  New TP5x is pretty good in the wind as well as the BX.

I used to swear by Bridgestone for their playability in the wind, but haven't played them in a while.  I would like to try the new BX.

I've been using Srixon Z-Star XVs the past few years, they are quite good in the wind, so is the regular Z-Star.  CSXLS is also good, tested it for awhile last year, but the version I played was very firm, I didn't care for the feel that much.

But I must say, the past few weeks I've been playing the Pro V1 Left dash, and it is outstanding in the wind.  I played a tournament a couple of weeks ago, on day one, the wind was 20-30 mph with gusts to 40, and the left dash was very resistant to the wind, and long....  The only thing I really noticed was downwind; it tended to drop out of the sky somewhat, but that is part of it, perhaps. I was expecting more help from the downwind and didn't get it.....

This is the correct answer.  Played it yesterday in steady 20 mph winds and hit a couple of shots that cut through the wind that had me scratching my head

Drives down wind reduce spin so it makes sense that the ball would look like it would drop outta the sky.  Ball will also usually flatten out a bit down wind as well.  I have the left dash in my rotation as well and it's definitely one of lower spinning tour balls.

Bridgestone Tour B RX for adverse windy conditions. It's lower spin than the Tour B X, so irons balloon less into the wind, and lower spin also means lower side spin, so crosswinds don't amplify off-course direction as badly.  On tailwind holes, play the Tour B X.  I usually play the Tour B X, but pull out the RX for headwind and crosswind holes.  Then you're also used to hit.  Between clubs on a par 3, and really want to hit the shorter club harder?  Easy, switch to the lower spin RX, which will go a few yards further (I find irons and wedges about 3-6 yards longer with it) and swing away.  Those flyer lies can really go long with the RX though since it's already low spin.

Play in a lot of windy conditions on my home course here in Norway, and I can vouch for the z-stars. I've compared them with AVX, ProV1 and ChromeSoft.

I recently did one run with ballnamic and it told me that the 2022 AVX (which I listed as my current ball) had a driver wind score of 100 since it is at the top of their rankings for driver distance into the wind.  The left dash had a score of 92.  Since I was looking for a pretty balanced ball, not just one that is good into the wind, my other three suggestions were less good into the wind, but better in some other categories.  I might do another ballnamic run to see if there are other balls that are similarly good into the wind as the AVX or left dash.

Bridgestone and Srixon

Snell was the best the MTB or the Black

That ball going away has cost me a lot of money in trying to find another ball I like that much

Kinda settled on the Triad and BridgeStone XS

Looking forward to see what Snell has coming on the 22nd

I played in my 50 and over club on March 30 the same weekend the women played in Gilbert AZ.  Winds were over 20 mph with gusts over 35.  One hole downwind I was 188 out and bounded a 7 iron 20 feet by the hole.  Later in the round into the wind I hit 7 iron from 115.   I shot a bogey free 67 with a supersoft.  The 3 guys I played with all used Titleist.  One of them shot 70 but had 5 bogies.  Historically the old dual dimple bridgestones were my windy day choice but now I use callaways. Their dimples allow curvature for me without the ballooning or crazy side spin I see other balls develop. I hit 14 greens that day including a par 5 in 2.  Avg score in 1st flight was 74.4. I am older now with low 90's driver speed so I prefer the lower compression balls. But the dimples on the callaways are quite similar throughout the line.

I live in Nebraska and play in wind more often than not.  By wind I mean 15+mph.  Anything under 15mph is just a breeze :-). Of the various balls I've tried in windy conditions there are two standouts for me.  The Tour BX and Chromesoft X LS.  I have not tried the 24 iterations of either ball (Chrome Tour now) to see if they've retained their ability to cut through the wind.  I recently bought a few dozen 22 model year BX balls because they are a) an excellent ball overall and b) they handle the wind extremely well and c) are currently offered at a really good discount..

Great news, fellow Nebraskan that plays at an entirely open course in North Bend that never see's less than 15mph surrounded by open fields. I just ordered some BX to try also trying to cut some spin out of the game so should be a fair match!

Most of the time, people don't want to hear about the performance of premium balls, mainly due to cost.

Anyway, I am recently back from a south AZ golf trip where we encountered a day of ugly conditions, wind, cold and drizzle.  Half-way through the round, wind and cold on a difficult target course, had me switch from my regular #1-DASH -ProV1x to #2-AVX, which performed nicely to the end of the round.

The next day was much warmer out except the wind was still gusting 2-3 clubs worth.  Because of the warm temp, I kept low-spin DASH -ProV1x in play and it performed as I anticipated.
