I Googled "hook of hamate fracture" and I swear I may have the same ailment. I just gave it a lot of time off and play with graphite shafts when it flares up. Much worse in the summertime with harder fairways. I've been avoiding an xray or mri, but may need to do that...

 

Watch that video Titleist-Golfer just posted, that's exactly where it hurts. I can still function, right now it's not in a cast or anything, but certain movements really hurt bad, my pinky finger is very bruised and is slightly numb. The problem is that you can still use your hand and it will improve, but you'll just keep breaking that bone and it will never fully heal unless you get lucky or remove it. I'm naturally left handed but golf righty, so this is going to really suck for a little while not being able to use my left hand.

3 months off wont even dent your game though, don't stress

we have 6 months off every year and it only takes a little bit to get things going again

My son is a lefty and golf right too! It sounds like that's what I had as well. I had no idea how I got it it just hurt like hell swinging clubs. I took about a month off and tried to play through it. I wish I would have just got it handled like you are as it would have saved me more time vs trying to play through it. Sounds like yours is worse though. Mine hurt at impact. Didn't hurt when holding something, just when pressure was applied. Now I know what to look for if it happens again.

I watched that video and that is exactly what I am going through and precisely where the pain is located. I'll have to get it checked out by the doc and go from there. I figured it was just an overuse injury to a tendon or ligament, but from the videos and other pictures on the net, it sure looks like the hamate. The prospect of playing golf without pain is something that would certainly make the game more enjoyable!

The silver lining is that it broke pretty bad, the fracture is noticeable on the x-rays vs. many that have it it's very hard to see and is more of a lingering pain like yours that can go on for a while (years my dr. said). I'd get it checked out and see what they say, surgery gives me major anxiety but sounds like the healing process isn't as bad as I initially thought <knock on wood>

I'll probably X-ray and then MRI if the doc says we should. Good to know that the diagnosis is definitive and the path to healing in track. It sounds like a more common injury in baseball and golf, but I've never heard of it before now!?

I hope you recover fast and well. Don't take any shortcuts through PT. It sucks Tai. Last year I broke my humerous. in my Left arm had no power for about 3 months. I feel your pain!

Man that is unfortunate. I have had a slight fracture in my hamate bone for about 4 years now and yes it is a lingering pain in the A.. mine will go away for a while until one day I hit a shot a little fat or usually comes back when I play hockey and take slap shots. I just got some ridiculously expensive topical pain cream that seemed to have helped with inflammation and pain quite a bit but surgery is the ultimate fix eventually.

Sorry to hear about the injury man. Sucks to get new toys and then not to be able to use them. On the plus side, 1) you are getting it taken care of and it that means there is a light at the end of the tunnel for recovery and 2) more family time. Either way, hope you all recover quickly.

So what did you do? Did it heal? Mine is actually getting worse, so even though I'm not thrilled about surgery, it's coming up fast and ready to get it over with.

mine wasn't swing related. during playoffs in my sophomore year (i was a pitcher) a line drive came up the middle and in a natural reflex i put my my hand to try and stop it/slow it down/unconsciously cause myself great pain --- lol it hit me clean on the palm and at first we thought the pain was just from bruising/etc -- come to find out that little bastxxx was broken. thankfully i didn't do much in the off season so, it 'healed' -- and since i didn't really swing a golf club/bat or anything in college it would appear at face value that it's holding up just fine.

 

at any time swinging a club it could break tho so, i'm not going to jinx myself. although i think i just did. or didnt. i dunno.

Surgery last week, cast off this week, phys. therapy starts next week, and about 4 more weeks till I can golf..

Thanks guys, such a frustrating injury.. but such is life. Funny thing is that I've been posting about it on my IG and one of my buddies is a really solid NCAA player and had to WD recently with pains similar to what I was describing. We exchanged texts and I basically told him what took me a few weeks to settle on (surgery) and he used his college connections with a specialist to get diagnosed and fast tracked to surgery the next day. Same injury, crazy! Funny thing is that the nagging "arthritic" pain that I had for a few weeks was definitely playable and I could go 100% with my driver no problem, till that one swing that snapped the bone.. just a really weird injury a lot of golfers probably overlook it for a while and deal with it.. I think I just got lucky that mine broke in the way it did so it was easily diagnosed and remedied.
