Stiffest shaft you've ever seen/played

Tyler Harris

Recommended Posts

Stiffest I ever had was a Penely hybrid heater prototype in a tour issue idea pro 18*. Before I had ever even hit it my buddy asked me skeptically if I even could. Landed about 6 ft from the pin from 210 or so out.... never hit another good shot with it. Ended up giving to another friend of mine who is quite the power house. He was complaining about it being stiff as a telephone pole. Pulled the grip off and it was XX stiff or something stupid like that.

But at least I shut that kid up with the first hit. Must have gotten my adrenaline flowing :)

I'm playing PX7.0 now and finding a shaft stiff enough is usually my problem. BUT, the stiffest shaft I've ever played is a Matrix Infra Hybrid. I like the feel of boardy shafts (like the RIP) but this thing is an I-beam. I feel 0 flex from it at all.

Read on here somewhere that a Ping rep somewhere built a rh version of Bubbas driver and was letting some guys try it. I have never seen it or played it but from reading the post no one could get the ball off the ground with it!

Rip boardy? I'm getting rid of mine at the moment out of my Titleist because it's so weak?

Who else here thinks the Rip is boardy?

Honestly stumped by this one as I can't control this shaft at all??

Two shafts come to mind for me, and I'm much more "mortal" than some of you. One day when I wasn't swinging well, the Devo 7 05 was absolutely rebar. Couldn't get it to flex.

The one I'm really thinking of is the Cleveland Fuji Fit-On Red X flex shaft in an older XL Tour. That thing was absolute rebar!
I love my DEVO! I play the 6 06 and it's great, It just got kicked out of the bag though lol
Have you sold the Devo 6 6 yet? I'd be interested in trying it.
Im holding on to it for wet days as I carry it further. Right now I've been playing a lot with my "scramble" shaft so that I can get more roll, it's a long drive optimized grafalloy blue 3x that I play at 48". I play the Oban at 44.5 and I'll switch back to that when winter is over.
I'd highly recommend it if you find one at a decent price. For a 60 gram shaft it has the best feel of any haft I've ever played and keeps my usually sky high flight down to an acceptable height.

Never played it, but a buddy of mine bought a LD shaft somewhere, where I have no clue. It's already playing as XX, he measures it out and decides it's 4" too long. What does he do, class? Yep, you guessed it, he tipped it 4" without knowing what he was doing. He was playing said shaft in a 9.5° driver and was quite excited that this thing was going to absolutely bomb it. I saw him hit roughly 10 tee shots with it, each one of them moles were ducking at 100 yards from this white satanic round beast that was being blasted through the air no more than 20 feet off the ground at its highest, then rolling for 50 yards at least. To this day it's one of the funniest golf related things I've seen. Every time we play, by the end of the round he's teed off and someone has told him to "get the Sadlowski driver out."

I take a good rip at it around 112-115 and honestly....

Graffaloy Prolaunch Red X - which is on the firmer side of the flex charts.

I had it in a 9* PING G10 and I can honestly say, I only ever hit that driver good once.

I was talking on the phone with my cell phone provider before I got to the course and I was trying to fix a BIG mess, I ended up being on the phone until the 3rd hole and I was so mad, I ripped at one at it went forever. Smooth 325 up hill. The other 200 drives...not even close. lol

Shaft was a beast.
+1. Nothing but low fades with a Grafalloy Prolaunch Red X in a 909D2.
I've been using Grafalloy Prolaunch in X for 6 months or more in all my woods / Hybrids. I swing at approx 112-114mph with a brisk transition. So not 'silly' quick by any means.

In my drivers i play it tipped 1/2" - 3/4" and have no trouble drawing it or fading (My more normal shape). I also like lighter swing-weights which stiffens the flex up a bit too. But i do like a stiff feeling shaft for sure....

I was warned this was hyper stiff; but i dont find it any stiffer or boardier than a Tipped UST V2 for example which i also used extensively a few years ago.

Bought a PX X-7a3 pull a few years back. Turns out it was tipped about 2 1/4". I still have it in an Adams A4 head, and played it for about 2 years. Definitely need to bring the heat to feel any amount of loading. When I was in a bit better shape I could hit into the low 120's but I've since dialed it back.

Anyone know what the CPM would be on this shaft tipped that much?

In my youth I played a 43" persimmon driver with an X-300 shaft but the stiffest driver I ever hit was a MacGregor metal made for Greg Norman. He liked to be able to release it as hard as he could without fear of a hook. He had it with that driver.

For irons, the DG X7 shafts are the stoutest I've hit.

In the late '80s, Bridgestone put a crazy stiff and low torque shaft in their J's Professional Weapon. My buddy was a pretty hard swinger and played an R in that club that felt like a stout S. The stiffer flexes were ridiculous with that tiny, top weighted head. They used a lot of boron in the tips of the higher end shafts back then with torque ratings in the low 1* range in some cases. Swing a little (gray, dimpled) 7.5* Burner with an Aldila HM-55 X flex and you'll never complain about the lack of forgiveness in any modern driver head.

Hmmm. I might be weird, but the only times I notice a shaft being "too stiff" are when I am not swinging well. If I put a good swing on the ball, it is rare I even notice flex unless the shaft is a complete noodle.

Played a scramble with a guy who had a grafalloy Prolaunch blue... it was marked stiff. I was curious, cuz he was built like the Rock and swung it with no reservations. I asked him about it, he said that he tipped it "as much as he could". I couldn't try it out (lefty problems), but i can only imagine the boardiness of it.

He's probably talking about the RIP Alpha, super low torque (what makes 'em feel "boardy") in the heavier shafts. The Beta and Gamma versions were much higher torque and felt much smoother per flex.

I don't know what the other guy was talking about, but I was talking about the Alpha. I've heard a lot of people complain about it being boardy, but I just love it. Ordered a 105x to try in a hybrid.

Played a proforce prototype that was tour X and the stated cpm was 296, installed in a bore through 983e head.

Current driver shaft is an Altus lt XX FLEX but it doesn't feel that gnarly. Actually the only shaft I've swung that I felt was too stiff was a 90x rip, it just felt dead and like doesn't feel any load

I swung a couple of long drivers with HoF XXX flex and one with a UST XXXX flex. Both were built to 49.5" LDA length so they don't really play as stiff as you would think. Still felt like rebar and I had a 125 mph swing speed at the time with driver.

Threadomancy!!! LOL

But what the hell, I'll play.

Back in the day, Graphite Design used to have a shaft called the D03. It was heavy (over 90g IIRC), super low torque (1.5°?), and was a full flex stiffer than the flex designation. It didn't just play that way, it really was stiffer. :)

A local 2nd Swing shop had gotten a Precept 260LS driver that had a D03 installed, in XX flex. If you wanted, you could take a few swings in the cage. I'd been playing a Composite Dynamics HP/M Tour shaft in 2X flex, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I hit it about four or five times and felt like I'd just spent an afternoon as a muy thai sparring dummy.

I can't imagine the swing of someone who would need a stick like that...
