Stiffest shaft you've ever seen/played

Tyler Harris

Recommended Posts

I never hit them but back in the day I used to make clubs for a Long Drive guy, used to mess with Penley and Harrison 4 and 5 X flex shafts..Put them in Bang heads.

As an aside, the longest shaft I have ever worked with is 8' (FEET!!) Back when Apollo shafts were made in England. Had a few specially made for a trick shot guy. That was fun.

Back when I was competing in LD was an Accuflex Assassin XXX, on a Bang 5.5* head, best combo I have ever used.

1st shaft that comes to mind is a Penley Platinum XX that came in a Biggest Big Bertha proto 6 deg. Head.. i won this on a bet from... I think it was Bob Gilder and a callaway rep at the BC Open in like 2000.. Iactually gamed that for quite a while.

More recently i hit some guys 4 deg. Krank with a HOF Platinum in XXX... even at 48" it was tight.. it actually was insanely accurate too.. couldnt really get the launch up but i was one hopping the range with bullets...

Only shaft I've ever played that I felt like I couldn't load worth a damn was the Speeder 7.2 Tour Spec X.

Sold it immediately after trying it out in a R1 I bought off the bay as an experiment.

Holy old thread!

Anyways, I slapped a ProjectX Blue HB6 with an inch of tipping into my 3 hybrid as an experiment. It lasted about one range session before I had him pull it.

A bag of left-handed junk.

Played with another lefty couple 3 years ago. He had a 7.2 speeder x flex in a 3w with tipping to boot. He asked if I wanted to swing it. It was laughable. I think it messed my swing up the entire round.

Probably the stiffest shaft I've hit would be a Project X 10A2 that had been tipped somewhere between 2"-2.5", but I quite liked the way it felt. Stiff but not harsh, it just felt very tight. Kind of like I could 'point' where the ball would go.

I did briefly have a Matrix HD10 in X flex tipped 1" (the 'standard' recommended amount for a 3 wood) that felt horrible to me. I would occasionally hit it well, but it felt like I couldn't get it to load at all, and I had no idea where the ball was going.

I've hit a couple of XX Matrix shafts, but those models did not feel anywhere near as difficult to load as the HD10.

Matrix black tie hm3 105Xx I just picked up for my driving iron. Feels as close to a legit telephone pole as anything I’ve hit. And it’s perfect.

I had one of David Duval's backup drivers from around 2010-ish. A Nike VR Tour 420cc 8.5 with the original Diamana Whiteboard 83x shaft. Not just stiff but the swingweight was up there too, thing felt like it was steel-shafted.

In graphite it was the Alila HM55. 1.4 degrees of torque. 110gram range, boron re-enforced tip so very tip stiff. Most PGA Tour players thought it was harsh and not responsive. Those that tried it preferred it in an R flex

I heard Mark OMeara was one who tried it and put it in play

wasnt told it was the R flex!

As a teen I had a set of Cleveland TA7 with DG S300 sensicores that also came with a 2 iron with some manner of DG X100 shaft in it. It felt ridiculously heavy compared to the other clubs in the set (don't know why) and I couldn't elevate it much higher than 40 feet off the ground, striking it all over the face.

A friend of mine who was a legit +3, ss (guessing) upper teens, got hold of a 6* Bang with a Proforce Gold X that had been tipped to make a 45" driver. At the time, I was 100-105 ss and could still play. I hit that thing about 10 times on the range and (bragging) finally carried one about 145-150 with an odd little slice. Even with a good strike, it felt like neither the head, shaft or grip absorbed any vibration. Went right up through the hands, arms and finally into the molars. The driver ended up in my friends closet of death.

I bought a Titleist prototype lob wedge a while back, still have it. Must have been for Phil Blackmar or similar, about an inch (maybe 1 1/2) over with a PX 8.0 shaft.

Two come to mind, fuji fuel 70x tipped just over 2inches and a 7.2 ts speeder tipped 2inches.

How does the 7.2 feel? Thinking if switching from my rogue I/O listed above.

Being tipped 2 inches the feel was awful. Reminded me of a ctaper 130x driver shaft. I only swing it 112mph, if you can bring 120+mph it may be okay but I couldn't feel any loading at all. I know play it in a 5 wood and its fine. I much prefer the feel and performance from the Diamana series. I can tip them 1.5 and they feel fine.
