Stiffest shaft you've ever seen/played

For me, KBS X-flex C-Tapers in my prior set of Taylormade MC / CB tour preferred irons. PW through 7 / 8 iron wasn't the issue, 6 through 3 iron were a handful. After "making" those work for 2 seasons, I tested a set of KBS stiff flex C-Tapers in my old R9 irons, and really liked the feel and performance. As a result, I have been playing KBS stiff flex in RBZ tour irons ever since.

In driver, the stiffest was the Diamana ahina X-flex. A bit too stiff (worked well swinging well, diasater when I wasn't swinigng well). . . Went back to the Kai Li X-flex after a season nd a half experiment.

115 gram TX tour only version of Diamana Thump hybrid. An absolute telephone pole.

If you don't like it, ship that my way. The D+ 100-X tipped to length isn't impressing me. And I love my Thump X.

Two come to mind. First, working at the driving range 1979, there were the usual assortment of golf clubs for us to use when not dodging range balls in the picker, or hunting down those that escaped the net, wearing a helmet resembling a catchers mask welded onto a construction hard hat. There was a driver with a (then) oversize head of about 140 cc's, laminated, with a steel X stiff shaft. That was the most brutish club I have ever swung, nothing got over 5 feet off the ground and stung your hands no matter where you made contact. No one could make it work, not even the Pro, and he could play. Second, I was having problems keeping the ball down with my 1996 TaylorMade Tour Spoon, I took it to the club repair guy that did all the country clubs repair work for free, and played at all of those clubs for free, pretty sweet deal. He didn't believe me when I described my problem, had me try a shaft he said would bring the ball down, tip stiff, high flex point. Still the same story, ball ballooning up into the air and losing distance. He went into his shed where he kept old or generally unneeded shafts, came back with a Precision Rifle stepped steel shaft FCM 7.5. I don't remember if it was a full uncut shaft, but he cut 2 inches off the tip (taper tip?!) and said I Beam, between 8.5 and 9.0 now, go hit it and tell me the ball goes too high. Well, same story, 14 degree off the deck spinning up into the sky and coming down at about 4 iron distance. He built me a new strong 3 wood, I don't remember the shaft, but it worked. He then asked me to play with him at his member guest tourney, we came in second, he was disappointed, but built me Titleist Tour Model (97-98?) in Dynamic gold x100 shafts hard stepped one time (cut off 1/2 inch off of the 36 1/2 shafts for the 9 and PW), I think he won some side action I was not privy to. Still have that set, though its usually August before I'm making swing speed anymore, 116 with a J's Professional Weapon 43 1/2 inches, 1996, still have that club too. Now, just tipping my Stiff rated Driver shafts, but not quite X any more (unless you have some new secret shaft that still works at 108 -110!)

My friends PX 7.0 iron shafts are like a solid steel bar to me,just feel horrible and he has a 1 inch tipped Grafalloy Blue X in a 44 inch driver with 7.5* which he hits high but just worm burners for me.

sounds like Stenson's specs from a few years back

That's because the post is from a few years back...

After trying almost every iron shaft out there, DG Tour X7, definitely. But they aren't that bad.

Woods? Back around 2001, everyone had some posts. Graphite Design had the VJS110PLUS. 107g, rated as an X, but was stout and about 1.6° torque. I had that in a Bridgestone J33 driver and could beat the crap out of it. It was great in high winds.

The best fujikura shafts were the Tiger and VJ protos, which were both based of the Speeder 1061 profile. I had a TGW-02-W-XXX proto in a 7.5° R7 (at the time, the absolute bomb) that I used for LDA. I was playing another 7.5° R7 with a "normal" Speeder 1061-XX. 116g, 1.5° torque, and the bend point was under your lower hand. Tipped to length, because there was no spin reduction built into shafts back then. I still have some 1061-XX and XXX shafts for fairways.

Of the modern shafts, the Graphite Design P9003 TX is still my favorite driver shaft, along with the Project X-10A2 in the fairways. They are a "smooth" boardy and cut spin much better than the older shafts.

I still remember the 1061 I got from you, what a GREAT fairway shaft

Aldila VooDoo XPP105. A 105g proto VooDoo in with Protopype profile made for Sergio. Or I once had a XXTW unpainted shaft that was bascially like a Fujikura HKPRO-110 XX made for TW to try in his 5W. John Daly XX Rombax 80. Still have an HD10XX in my closet.

All of those were for my swing 7+ years ago. Now I'm toying with SX. haha

I got a club from a champions tour player that was an diamana 80x in his driver......

I have one of these.. 80x is part of the model #.

Great shaft!

Mike

this was an old driver from Andy Beene or Bean. I worked with his daughter for a few years and he sent old clubs to the golfers at work. she said he had at least 9 or 10 bags full of clubs from over the years. he was big enough to be a lineman in pro football.

to still swing that shaft at 65 years old or older(?) was pretty impressive.

the stiffest shaft I ever used was a project x graphite in my 910. shaft said 5.5 but measured to 6.5. that combo was crazy long but explained why I had trouble occasionally.

Came across an old school Aldila XVS7xx that was like 307 CPM. Monster shaft!

Aldila RIP Alpha 80 tour x was stupid stiff

Always thought the Fuji Motore F1 4.0 was pretty legit and underrated as well.

The closest thing I've hit to 904hb is the Mitsubishi Tensei Pro White hybrid. It's Tour only at the moment but I think this is THE hybrid shaft that all the 904hb guys will absolutely love.

Over the summer i was messing around and tried to replicate Tigers old 975 driver. Bought an x100 for cheap, tipped it 1" and put it in an old 975D head at 43 1/2" D4 swing weight. Sucker was a cannon but I had to absolutely swing out of my shoes to launch it. Felt like swinging a 2x4 and very straight. Pretty fun to mess around with and a good workout but I never took it to the course. Gave it to a buddy who was putting together a Tiger slam bag for his man cave. As far as irons I had a set of Apex 5 Hogan PCs I got from the goodwill and those were some worm burning implements. Found out whoever had them before me must have had them hardstepped twice after I did a little research and comparison to other Apex 5s i had.

the only guy that would hard step Apex 5s would be Mr Hogan himself!
