My club wont allow any members that have played in at least 1 pro event to compete in club championships.

This is probably different state to state, club to club.

Yep I can see where that can vary==== I guess it depends on the Board of Directors or the Tournament Commitee

Played in a pro event competed as a pro?  I feel like there is a very big distinction.  I played in the Ohio Open a few times in college as an amateur and have been a (somewhat) competitive Am at the local level since then.  I would hope that wouldn't be disqualified.

Registered as a pro in a recognized event, Mackenzie tour for example.

He's quite right, pros are allowed to play in the regular comps here, provided they have a hcap. Granted, they usually don't win the net.

I am not sure about the Club Championship though, I don't think they can play, at least in our club.

So one of the guys I play with now and then was on the practice green talking about playing Torrey Pines.

One guy said it was a very hard course but at least he made a par on the 18th green.  The other guy said that he made an eagle on the 18th green, "driver then 3 wood".  The best part was he said it was when he was playing persimmon woods when he made the eagle.

Must be a sad day for a pro when they want to whip up on some amateurs in a club tournament, no matter how good the AM's are.  Probably time to go start selling insurance.

Not really, here's an example, Brett Rumford who used to be a touring pro was also a member at our club. Being at the tail end of his career he stayed sharp playing our Wednesday morning comp. His hcap was +2 or 3 at the time, so his chance of winning weren't that high in Net, he would regularly win the Gross, but not always, few of our members are proper players. Just like any clubs I suppose, our members have some ex sports professionals in need of some competition.

"Who taught you how to hit bunker shots? Everyone knows you aren't supposed to close your stance in a bunker." Right after I lipped out a 20 yarder on the practice green.

If global thermonuclear war ever happens, all that will remain will be bees, cockroaches and these tees.

Get one of the short ones, peg a ball up, and hit down on it like Mark McCumber with a 9-iron. You won't break it.

Yeah but what tees was he off of with the persimmon? How far was his 2nd shot? Or did he fly it in from the fairway with a 8 iron. Endless possibilities

  • 1 month later...

I was playing in a 2 day local amateur event about 15 years ago. Paired on the 2nd day with a guy that I find out later is universally known around the area for being a little egotistical (aka an a hole)...

We’re on the 11th hole, and we’re both in a greenside trap that is in bad shape, bone dry. I blade mine a little, go long and make a 5. He gets his up and down for 4. Walking off the green he announces to our 3rd and I- “yeah, that was a low bounce 60. I’m carrying 2 lob wedges, low bounce and high bounce. I’m probably the first person to ever have 2 lob wedges in their bag”.  🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

So first off, nobody asked him a thing. Second, i strongly doubt that someone playing in an amateur tournament in central PA is the first person in the history of golf to do anything.

May not have been on the range, but that was probably the most ridiculous! Close 2nd was a guy telling me he was going to lay up on a 190yd par 3 in our club championship to take the trouble out of play 😂

At my old home course, The Golf Club at Blue Heron Hills, this was actually a viable strategy on #17. A par-3 playing 190-200 yards with water left and short right, and not much room behind the green, there is a small sliver of fairway you can bail out short playing at the left center of the green. Some guy actually just played wedge-wedge both days and made his pars while other guys put up some big numbers, and I believe he ended up winning the club championship that year. Sooooo, I wouldn't consider that strategy ridiculous if it works.

Well, good for that guy! The hole i’m referencing has no water whatsoever so I stand by my original statement 😂

Stall to my right (I’m right handed, so I’m facing it) has a guy hitting balls quickly…and badly. Slice, top, smother, repeat. His friend is leaning on the hitter’s golf bag, smirking while watching. I figure he might be holding back some advice.

Nope. When the smirker finally steps up, it turns out he’s getting instruction from the hacker!  Needless to say, it wasn’t great instruction. And he insisted on swinging the driver a lot. Which included plenty of complete whiffs.  It was very hard to ignore all this!
