Yeah nice story, similar story in Ireland/European Tour this week as former pro Gareth Maybin has decided to retire at 36, was once in the top 100 of the world rankings. Like Wi, he played well for years but never won, it just shows you the security that a few wins can do to you. Hard to maintain a lifestyle that involves constant travel if you're not making enough to make it worthwhile as well, and the older you get the more weary you get too. Very understandable.

was lucky to have met him and had a short conversation with him -- very genuine, friendly guy. i wish him the best and hope he plays the champions tour.

its a shame that he lost that competitive edge. I was curious what had happen to him. Kudos to KJ for appreciating the friendship and seeing the good side of Wi.

Thanks to the OP for posting that link.

Hoping Charlie much success in his latest endeavor. Teaching young players sounds like a lot of fun.

He stack and tilted his way into retirement.

He stack and titled his way to an amazing career. I'm not a stack and tilt guy, but his work with snt turned him from a decent player who could putt the eyes out of it, into a darned good player!

and yes, he's a good guy

his last 5 seasons is a reading off missed cuts.

mentally weak and stack and tilt ruined him.

pressure on and start hitting wild shots, guess there is a connection there somewhere.

“You’re only one swing away from either starting to play good or starting to play bad,” Bill Haas once told me.

Wi would concur. “People don’t know this, but you’re always constantly under stress,” he said. “You’re stressed when you’re not playing well. And when you’re playing well, you’re stressed that you have to keep playing well. It’s unrelenting.”

“I was one of those guys who could turn 73 into 69, and now I was turning 70 into 74 or 75,” Wi said. “The anxiety was getting to me. On practice days, I could make 100 putts in a row, but in a tournament, I couldn’t get a putt on line to save my life.”

I suppose it's difficult to comprehend why someone would voluntarily walk away from a career that 99% of the people on this board would love to have. Hell, we've all had the dream about being that good at the game we love.

At least Charlie Wi walked away on his own terms.

(I'll bet 5 years of teaching fires up his competitive juices and we see him at Champions Tour Q School)

I never heard of him until he started Stack and Tilt and started cashing huge checks and showing up on TV everywhere. He is retired at 45, cashing in on FedEx cup annuities, and is financial secure for life. Mentally weak? this take is weak.

Funny, I was wondering out loud to someone the other day about what had happened to Charlie.

He had a nice run there where he was on the leaderboard a lot. Sounds like he's found a great way to spend his time.

I knew Charlie when he turned pro, and played some Nike (or Buy.com) before he headed over to Asia and started to really see success.

And I can tell you from watching, that he was ridiculously better as a SNT player than he was coming out of college.

You can hate any method you want, but I was pretty darned impressed with the improvements Charlie made, and he had a career that most do not.

He and KJ Choi are looking good. Would be pretty awesome if they won and he got 2 years of PGA Tour starts

The stress must be unrelenting when you have $10 million in the bank and a pension to draw on in your mid 40's. I'm glad most Americans don't have to experience that hardship.
