Callaway Epic

Any information on Callaways new Epic forged irons? Are they solid players or another hollow microspheres and tungsten stuffed Game Improvement club?

The only upcoming Cally irons that I know of are the XForged Star irons

Sounded like they were coming in August. We’ll see soon I guess.

They are releasing 5 versions of the Epic irons, with the final version being a players blade called the Epic Tour Subterranean Triple Diamond Hot.

TXG's review here:

TLDR; Strong lofted irons (6i was 24* loft) but insane ball speed. Spin was a little bit on the low side, but height was good.

$300 retail price tag per iron, and most of us higher speed h0es will be wanting after market shafts to go in there so this being utilized as a driving iron will be a pretty expensive club.

Unless this puppy is somehow more forgiving than Rogue/Flash 5wood, I'm not sure I could justify this price tag.

Dude... you would be hitting a 18 or 19* 3i like 280-290 if Ian is hitting the 6i 215 in the air lol.

The reality is you don't... you play 5-GW and maybe weaken the lofts 1* in certain cases instead of 4-PW using "traditional" lofts. These aren't really meant for professionals or low HC who already can hit a 48* wedge 130+ yards.

I'd like to see these vs M6 vs F9 in a 4i shootout to see who the king of ball speed is and which might be the best driving iron 'replacement'. Wonder if we will see Phil with a 3 or 4i in this club at the Open?

these lofts are an absolute disgrace, callaway should be ashamed

I’m a big Callaway fan but I have 0 interest in these irons. A 24* 6 iron is flat out stupid. I don’t want to hear the counter argument that the loft is brought down to achieve a certain trajectory because the irons are so forgiving with a lower CG yada yada yada.

Callaway messed with the length as well. A standard 6-iron is 37.5 inches. This one is 38.25 inches.

About half that ball speed increase is coming from the extra length of the club.

Bingo! That's the biggest mistake here. Loft jacking is actually a good thing if you really think about it. All other things being equal, is it going to be easier to hit the middle of a club face with a 35/degree club that's 36" long, or a 35/degree club that's 37" long? Obviously the 36" 35/degree club will be easier, all other things being equal.

Callaway basically takes away the real advantage of loft jacking by increasing the lengths and reducing the static club head weights.

I never understand all the comments like "the lofts are an absolute disgrace" Clubs are made to suit a specific player. There are guys out there who want to hit their irons long and like this sort of thing. Those folks probably will not be searching through the ping blueprint thread.

Normally I'd agree with you. I'm mostly a "it is what it is" kind of guy - it it works for you fine if not go look elsewhere. But the logic of something working for those that need stronger lofts kind of breaks down when the manufacture also has to add a second gap wedge into the set.

stronger lofts do not make you a better player

Ideal for anyone playing an 8000 yard course. Useless for someone wanting a knock down draw to a tight pin. 24 degrees loft is a strong 4 iron.

I don't think though, that the "intended audience" is all that concerned about hitting knockdown 4i's. Plus, the 4i in this set I believe is 19*.... how many times per round are you trying to hit a low flighting 19* club into a green? Most of the time you want height on your long irons/hybrids/fairway woods coming into the green.

Not here to defend the lofts of these irons, what or why Cally made these but this type of design has been around now for like 4-5 years, and clearly consumers are buying, because companies wouldn't be spending the money to make them if people weren't. The number on the club is just a number... how far is goes and how it gaps with the rest of the set is really all that should matter.

Judging by the head girth and shaft selections, this set is definitely targeted for the aging demographic. Seems like good technology. Whatever pushes other manufacturers forward is good for golf.

Understand what you are saying......I am no way a fan of this type of iron, just saying that I know a lot of guys who enjoy the game much more since the jacked loft distance irons have hit the golfing world.....Not saying they are scoring better, just saying they enjoy these irons.....

Really upset with the looks of the epic flash hybrid, was hoping for a refresh of the OG epic/big bertha hybrid, but instead we get a massively bulging toe like the rogue hybrid. ugh.

as much as i dislike what they did this these irons, the epic flash hybrid actually looks pretty good

Did Callaway take the Triple Diamond Driver off their website? I don't see it anymore..

So this is pretty much what ping call power specs... Jack the lofts. Creates a nightmare in your bag for gapping (trust me I know this for a fact) and all the irons and pretty much -1 off the number written on the bottom?
