Where are all the 2 woods?

Played in my first club championship this weekend. It went poorly. Obviously it has nothing to do with my game, and everything to do with equipment (this isn't actually true). But I played 3 rounds with 7 different people and most of them refused to hit driver more than 6 or 7 times a round.

I saw hybrids, three woods and driving irons... I did not see a 2 wood. One guy informed me I didn't need to hit driver on every hole. I disagree, as I have more confidence in my 460cc head than I do my 200cc three wood. I'd rather take a 3/4 driver swing than hit three wood, as I find the results more consistent.

I would LOVE a 350cc 2 wood. These guys likely would love one as well... Is anyone making a BIG three wood? I can't think of any.

Yeah, that seems to be it on the market, and it's still not over 300cc.

I'd be curious to see how a 13 degree 300cc 43 inch club did on the market. Basically Phil's frankenwood all over again.

Yeah, it would be helpful for me, I just found it interesting how little people hit driver on the course over the course of the tournament... and, honestly, they didn't hit the hybrids or 3 woods much straighter...

There has been tons of offereings in recent year given the rather small market for this. TEE has been making 11.5 degree fairway woods for years now. Why not just go pick up a 983K and give it an updated shaft?

I rotate from time to time an Adams 9015D 10.5 with a TT X100 at 43.25" and is a blast (tho bigger than the foot print you're looking for).

I am a big fan of 2-woods and play about half of my rounds this year without a driver in the bag. I've used the following:

-Callaway Big Bertha Warbird (deuce)

-Callaway XHot 3 Deep - 13*

-Callaway X2Hot 2 deep - 12.5*

-Taylormade RBZ Tour Spoon - 13*

Currently in my bag is the warbird deuce. I have a lot of confidence in it and its a straight up fairway finder. I prefer to play courses that take the driver out of a players hands (tight, doglegs, etc). I like hitting a 2 wood or 19* hybrid. Like you said, I've found that many cannot hit them much straight than a driver so I excel on those courses.

My personal belief is that a 2wood should be able to hit off the ground well. That's why I prefer essentially a stronger lofted 3 wood and carry a 19* hybrid. I also prefer the lower trajectory of the 2-wood and its versatility in being a fairway wood and off the tee club.

I think the issue with a 300+cc club is that it will be very hard for most people to hit off the ground. And for the majority of people, I'd bet it's not going to be any straighter than swinging easy with their driver. I played a 3 Deep for a while as a driver replacement when I got back in the game. But I found it wasn't any straighter than a driver and arguably the worst mishits were even worse due to the smaller clubhead.

I'd also suggest the 11.5 degree 983K if you can find one (365 cc) and really want to try it out.

Some interesting thoughts and suggestions in this thread... Ideally, I'd be carrying a club in my bag that I was confident with and could carry (and stop) at around 260 yards. It might end up being a 13 degree driver with a three wood shaft in it.

I'd be giving up a three wood to slot it in (maybe... I haven't built my new bag yet) but there are about 6 holes on my home course where the driver risk / reward isn't there, so I'd like a shorter club designed to be hit off a tee (and still have it go 260 yards...).

But I'm a weird exception... I can and will still hit driver on every hole. It ends poorly for me on occasion (both in misses and good hits carrying the fairway) but the people I played with would have been better off missing their drivers rather than hitting a mediocre hybrid shot.

Ryoma is the only company I know of that makes a legitimate full Ti 2 wood, and calls it a 2 wood. And for just shy of $600, you can own one. YMMV. I'd try to find a Rapture 13° or any TEE in that category if you're dead set on a 2W.

Cobra Long Tom 2 wood is awesome. Circa 2012. 45in 12.5 degrees. I used this as my driver for a few months. At the time was every bit as long.

As others have said the Taylormade The One would be the route to go. That said, as someone who also prefers hitting the driver over a fairway wood, the 2 wood fantasy doesn't really play out well. You'll still end up wanting to hit the bigger headed driver off tees and the 2 wood will go way too far to be used as a layup club, while also being complete garbage off the deck. I'd suggest the TaylorMade M6 -- it's big enough that I feel more confidence but it can still be hit off the deck and used as a lay up club. Could just be me though.

I have a Callaway Great Big Bertha Hawkeye Deuce (Titanium head from circa 1999). Tried it a few times, but prefer my driver (see below). Woods had a 60-gram shaft, a lighter one for the era.

Another variant is called the Thriver. This was a high-lofted driver head with a 3-wood length shaft to improve control. Check out the Hireko golf offerings and Hireko on eBay to find one.

If you want more control off the tee and don't plan to hit the club off the fairway, one of today's high-lofted drivers with a shortened shaft will perform like a 2 wood (aka Brassie).

0wnuyl59ve15.png

And, check out KickX golf, part of the company that brings us Medicus swing training aids. The KickX brand offers the Blast Driveway, a 12.5* control driver that can also be hit off the fairway. It comes with a **black boxing glove head cover**, guaranteed to intimidate your playing opponents.

The KickX brand makes a range of iron sets, woods and hybrids, along with the botique KickX Tour-Z golf balls, which are popular with several small-college golf teams.

I normally use my driver instead of the BD, because driver goes farther and a get solid control with it. BD is the choice for shorter, super-tight golf courses I encounter on occasion.

What college golf teams are those? Especially since the Kick-X golf balls are not on the USGA conforming ball list. Did you simply post old misleading ad copy from Kick-X or are those your "actual" words? Then there is this.

I'm looking at the TEE stuff... my local golf store is a distributor.

I hit 3w off the deck maybe once every five rounds... and it's always chasing after a par five (usually out of the rough). A good 2 wood that I was confident with off the tee would remove the need for that shot.

My big Q is .. if you are never going to use off the deck then is it better to have a 12 or 13 three wood or just carry a second driver at 13 or 14 degrees with a shorter shaft?
