Bigger iron = easier to hit?

AngryKoreanMan

Recommended Posts

Game improvement irons have bigger head than players irons and it's supposed to be easier for beginner.

But for me, as a beginner, it is not true.

When I see bigger head face in address, I kinda lose confidence because it's just too big and not sure if I can hit middle of the club.

When I hit smaller ones, I feel safer.

Is it just me?

Some people have this issue. I had that issue at one time, but I realized it is just a lack of focus. If I focus on specific contact with a bigger club, there is no difference. But if I just allow myself to swing a bigger club without that focus, I will miss the center more often. There are several ways to practice this. Impact tape or foot spray can do wonders for your ball striking.

You have to go with what suits your eye.

Difference is the size of sweet spot. Small forged blade has the sweet spot of a dime, you miss it and forgiveness almost non existent, you will lose 10-15 at a VERY minimum.

SGI clubs have a much larger sweet spot. I can hit a PXG off the far toe and only lose 5 yards max and a few mph in ball speed

Exactly.

When I was younger I played blades and loved them. Midsized clubs looked huge and ugly to me. Eventually I found some CB's I could tolerate looking at and the forgiveness advantage was clearly helping my game. Further on down the road I've gone to full size GI clubs and absolutely love them. My bias against the look of large clubs is gone and a whole new world of club options has opened up.

As an aside, I find it curious that we have so many people on GolfWRX that hate larger clubs yet these same people play 460cc drivers. How come the blade and small CB advocates are not all playing mini-drivers? Go figure.

Sometimes you have to make the journey before you realize that there was an easier way to get there all along.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

It's not only with golf clubs but with many things in life. Once you tell yourself something like that, you'll make it true. But it will be true for you, so make of that what you will. It's a powerful human ability that can be used both positively and negatively.

In comparing irons, SGI clubs feel clunky at impact (and look a little big).

SGI clubs and players clubs both feel (and look) better to me. But, I hit much better shots with GI irons.Takeaway: Go with what works on course, not what allows you self-delusion over drinks at the 19th Hole.

I don't agree with a lot of the responses you've gotten here.

There is nothing in your post that actually matters. Do you have any data to suggest that what you feel over the ball translates into the ball coming to rest closer to your target?

This is another variation on the feel vs. real debate. Your feel isn't real. Words like "confidence" and "feel" are what people use when they want to use a club but can't articulate why. Words like "GIR per round", "proximity", etc... are what people use when they are making a meaningful evaluation of irons.

Does it matter? I don't know. I guess. Its a part of it. But a much, much bigger part is to play 10 rounds with each and see which one hits the most greens. Then use that one.

Your question about the 460 drivers is easy Ness. I'm trying to hit my driver as far as I can. I'm not trying to do that with my irons. But I also am going to put a mini driver back in the bag this year. I love mini drivers.

Lately, I almost feel like I deserve a medal for being able to maintain a 0.0 index while playing SGI clubs. There seems to be unanimous online agreement that they make you worse.

If i played blades I'd probably be Brooks Koepka.

I got the thinnest butter knives in my basement (1971 Wilson Staffs) to the chunkiest of shovels (1997 Callaway Bertha Golds) and I can tell you from personal experience that I feel a little more confident in hitting scary shots (like a 190y carry over water on a par 3) but would rather play the smaller headed irons because they just feel better because of more mass behind the sweet spot.

You would need an ego bigger than any SGI club to be Koepka.

As for the argument on different clubs, I say to each their own. I feel like I can play most club types. Clubs with too big of a sole and too much offset to not work well for me though. And performance is what matters most to me. Do I love the way my PXG 0211's feel? Yes. They feel amazing. But if they did not perform well for my swing, they would not be in my bag. Same thing goes for sound. I have played everything from the Nike 5900 to the PXG 0811x. Anytime something went in the bag it was because it performed and I felt like it could help me score better. I don't understand how some people will pick up a club and say "it plays amazing, but I could never put it in my bag because it sounds bad", or the "turbulators are to ugly". Again to each his own. But for me, the words "deep rough" or "in the trees again" sounds far worse than the Nike 5900 driver ever did. And looking at a bogie or a double bogie on the scorecard because of a bad tee shot looks a lot uglier than some "turbulators" on top of a club. But...to each their own.

Yeah to each their own....I agree. But it just feels like nonsense with 17 threads about this same subject now in the last month, when in real life I've maybe heard one person say this in 16 years playing golf

I'm like Ricky Gervais at the golden globes now. I dont care anymore, fine ....everything is the opposite

Blades are better, playing 10 clubs is actually easier than 14, not using a driver is better than using a driver. Not using a rangefinder is easier than using one Etc etc .

You are right about it being beaten to death on the forums.

And a lot of it is done for ego stroking and self brags.... IE: "if I hit blades or players irons better than GI clubs it must mean I am a better player". Or i"f I play better without a range finder it means I have superior distance control and awareness". Or " I hit my 3 wood so far there is no reason to hit a driver" or "is it bad that I hit my 3 wood too far" and the list goes on and on.

And you know what Jeff? There will probably be 17 threads next month just like this! I will say one thing, if it was mandatory we had to play irons all the way to a 3 iron I'd never even look in the direction of a blade. Thank God for hybrids!
