Terrible bunker players - sure out 2 versus c3i

Recommended Posts

While I don't own the Sure Out 2, I have played the Sure Out 1 64* since it came out.

When they came out with more lofts I also added the 60*.

For bunker use I found the 60* was more friendly. With the 64* I had a tendency to barely get the ball out of the trap and sometimes it would roll back in. You really had to be aggressive with the swing and could not baby it.

The 60* seemed to get the ball out further and the odd thing was even higher too than the 64*. I quit using the 64* for bunker play but I left it in the bag because I love it on full shots from 60-65 yds. Its also handy around the green if you need to pop it up really quickly for short sided shots. Or if you want more height on a chip shot or short pitch.

The 60* Sure Out was an odd bird. While I loved it from the bunkers I didn't have the same magic with it on full shots as the 64* so I ended up selling it off and bought a Cleveland CBX 60* to replace it.

I had been playing a 56* CBX and was using it from the bunkers with some success.

I have no experience with the c3i but my golf spy did a test on the Sure Out 1, the c3i, and the Cleveland Smart Sole and the c3i won the test.

Yeah, I know it's not what you wanted to hear @sethg but this is spot on. My first reaction was, _why not just spend an hour hitting some bunker shots and figure it out!?_

Everyone sucks at bunker play until they learn it. And there's no learning without doing.

So considering you're just trying to get the ball to go 10-yards I have a hard time believing you are physically unable. Just takes a few balls and go hit some shots on the course.

Open your stance a bit. Open the clubface a little. Aim an inch or two behind the ball and just splash it out. By shot #6 you'll probably figure it out.

All good advice here re lessons, technique and practice, but I have to put a plug in for the Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth; I recently picked up one in 56* ES and it is crazy how easy it is to use in bunkers. I had been in a bunker slump; this wedge was a slump buster. I have no idea how the design of that sole works so well but it does. Good luck!!

I'm sorry, haha. That's just funny, lol.

Very true. This is GolfWRX where people change clubs weekly seeking an additional 5 yards off the tee.

To the OP, it's personal preference but I like the Cally wedges.

That is where practice and feel come in to play. There is no best loft for all situations. With proper technique, you can get away with even using a PW as a SW. I've heard stories of Seve using a 3 iron to get the ball out of bunkers in a 1 club tournament.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300

2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

I tried the C3i, ended up with the Callaway Sure Out 58 (first version). Makes getting out of the sand much easier---and yes, I've taken lessons and gotten instruction on sand shots, but I'm still better off with the Sure Out. The C3i is 65 degrees, which means it's got no range. The Sure Out 58, for me, has been useful in spots around the green, in rough, not just out of the sand. So I've been happy with the Sure Out. Have not tried the second version, but will do so to see if the changes make any difference. I'm a 13-14 hi, aging hacker, don't pretend to be anything I'm not, I practice and take lessons, but I also have a demanding job and a familly and a dog and a horse, and I'll play any club of any color, size, or shape if it'll help me on the golf course.

The PM grind is nothing special out of the bunker, I have a 58* PM grind and a 64* Sure out. Their both good from everywhere but the sure is noticeably better from the sand.

> Has anyone tried both of these? Any thoughts. For those with sure out 2 - what do you find the easiest loft is to consistently get out of green side bunkers when you are playing it square.

Buddy of mine has the C3i wedge. Worst bunker player on the planet, yet at his peak was down to a 5. Ugliest Swing known to man, He hoods the snot out of clubs you gotta see his driver setup, face is almost point to the sky, wild.

Anyway, He WILL NEVER get lessons he will NEVER change and does not want to change. So he avoid bunkers like the plague and hes pretty decent at doing so but once in a while he goes in and its a "blast" usually blows up and takes 3-7 to get out.

He bought the C3i and his swing works with it. Again he hoods all his irons has a steep AoA. So basically the 64* and the super wide sole helps him get the ball out. It aint pretty for him but works.

If you are not one for lesson while HIGHLY recommended ...... I have seen a crazy golfer with the ugliest swing... use it and it works better than anything else he's tried or does LOL!

The Sure Out works as advertised. If that makes it a “gimmick club”, then so be it. In fact, I’d take 13 other gimmick clubs in my bag if I could find them.

The new PM grind is the 2nd best club I've ever used out of the sand. The only one I can think of that was easier was the Vokey Wedgeworks K grind with 16* of bounce.

So buy a wedge for cheaper than a hundred bucks or so for a couple bunker lessons where you will easily learn how to use any decent sand wedge to get out of the bunker, or keep chasing the next "sure" "guaranteed", "bunker buster" wedge?

Seems like a pretty easy decision.

Totally agree with those telling you to learn the technique. This isn't like a driver or a set of irons. Sand play requires a very specific technique (maintaining loft while hitting the correct spot hard). Without that technique, its hopeless. If you gave someone who had never played golf before a driver and tee'd up ball they could intuitively figure out how to hit it. You can't do that in the sand. The correct answer, in this case, *is* get better. No club can fix loosing loft or missing low point on bunker shots. And before I get a thousand "You can't fix a bad full swing either!" replies, that misses the point. The driver can help a F swing by in bounds and 210 yards instead of OB and 190 yards. The ball either gets airborne out of the sand or it doesn't. There is very little in between.

Also keep in mind that many people are WAY too harsh on themselves about their bunker play. The best bunker players in the world get up and down less than half the time, and that is out of absolutely perfect bunkers. Find a youtube video you like, spend an afternoon figuring out how to hack it out and two putt, and never work on bunker play again.

Not the club you asked for but I used this when I sucked from the bunker.

https://www.rockbottomgolf.com/golf-clubs/wedges/worx-golf-wedge/

Basically it's idiot proof. Good or bad swings the club comes out. I used this until I got the feel then switched to an Eye 2 Grind until I was confident, and now getting out with ease using a traditional wedge.

Not sure why those suggesting take a lesson is a bad answer, bunker play really isn't hard unless you are in some soupy stuff or rock hard, then you just have to focus like a regular shot...
