Wow, some classic quotes in that article ... anyone that isn't playing Taylormade irons and balls is just leaving at least 10 yards at home ... it is nice to know that every word is 100% truth and there is no marketing spin on it at all ...

After a lengthy discussion with a reliable source I was informed that Rory Mcilroy will sign with Callaway Golf this season. This should not be a surprise as the only thing not Callaway in his bag are his wedges and golf ball which are Titliest. My source advise that Mcilroy had a great interest in Taylormade but they could not agree on contract terms. I was curious why Mcilroy had not signed to Callaway and I was advised that Mcilroy wanted 10 Million dollars a year for 5 years. Callaway and Mcilroy's agency could not agree on terms and the agreement is that Mcilroy will play the equipment and they will go back to the table after a few tournaments. I think Callaway should agree with the terms now because if Mcilroy wins the Masters or any majors unsigned his stock is going to get higher and he will ask for more money when they go back to negotiate.

This episode perfectly illustrates why TM is in the financial state that it finds itself in. They already had 2 players in the top 5 and 4 in the top 10 of the OWGR (including the world #1 and winner of most recent major), and now they sign over $100M over the next 10 years to McIlroy.

Let's assume (and that's a huge assumption) for just a minute that the "reliable source" above was correct and Callaway balked at spending half the amount TM just layed out and over half the contract length. They were (rightly or not) confident that McIlroy would not help them move enough product to justify their capital investment in him. But now here comes TM and they agree to pay TWICE that amount and agree to a contract over twice as long. A baffling business decision really, when put in full context.

#FakeNews. The deal was not 10 years $100,000,000. TM sources have already put that rumor to bed. I guess it is more fun to believe it is true though - and it fits the rhetoric.

Well I heard from an even MORE reliable source that Mcilroy has signed for Taylormade to use all their clubs, ball and bag for the next decade at $100m. It's the ball that clinched it for him as the best ball he has ever hit.............;)

no need to thank me.

I will divulge ALL my reliable sources at the drop of a hat...............;)

Whatever the $ amount actually is, it's still a weird business decision for TM and one that it's difficult to see paying appreciable dividends.

Looks like Callaway might be the winner. After the big signing of Tiger Woods, it seems like they have signed another bad back. Rory played with a stiff back again. Still from the rib injury earlier in the year. Not healed yet HHMM. One of the holes he was walking like El Tigre. Maybe time for a text to his hero so they can both yuk it up they are representing TaylorMade. Beginning to sound like Tiger.. new clubs new fantastic ball poor score ouch my back...

U should get advise from u reliable source on u use of English. Lots of punch Packing coming Up.

Your response using U in a sentence and criticizing my use of the english language is taking away from the thread as you are unaware of my education level likewise I am unaware of yours. I am not going to go back and forth with you and resort to pettiness and demoralized the ethics of this site and stain this lovely golf platform with ugliness. Been there, communicated with the moderators and I am committed to respecting the rules of this site and will stick to the topic on thread. Wish you the best.

Great example of staying on topic

While I have no idea about OP's actual sources, or lack thereof, I think it is pretty obvious that Rory has been playing Callaway and TaylorMade off against each other in order to get the deal he wanted. It may well be at one stage that he was more likely to sign with Callaway or that he started playing their clubs in order to put more pressure on TaylorMade. Same with the idea that that he was not going to sign for anyone at all in 2017 (put out through his friend NoLayingUp). All just seems a negotiation tactic.

Where is @nolayingup on this signing? He said Rory would NOT be signing any deal in 2017.

I'm right here. This is why the equipment game reporting is so pointless to me, and why I'm so hesitant to get involved. Rory himself told me he would be a free agent in 2017. I'm not sure what changed, but things did, and here we are. There isn't more to the story than that. So I'll own it for being wrong, and swear off the equipment game for real this time.

I think what changed was the recent Nike extension. I think it renegotiated the equipment portions of his previous contract and freed him up.
