Marc Leishman On 18 - 260 Out, Down 2, and Layup?

I don't think many people expected Leishman to carry it to the pin, but knowing he needs to eagle I was surprised he left himself the shot he did. He knows his game best, but one wouldn't be crazy to ask if he was really going for the win and nothing else.

I bet the man has holed more bunker shots than full wedge shots.

Big difference for amateurs, not pro's. Pro's can hit 2U real far.
35 yards and US Open Rough amounts to a huge difference.
There is no way he could have held the green with that 2U assuming he had the distance.

I'm not trying to prove a ANY point. LOL! If you didn't see the tournament on TV. The yardages, shots, and course layout is all here at Shot Tracker.

http://www.pgatour.c...ttracker.html#/

Day hit the green from the left side of the fairway from 237 and had an eagle putt. Perez from the middle had 245 and layed up. Leishman had a decent angle from 260.
He may have had a decent angle but did you see the freaking rough man? Did you watch that tournament? No one is hitting it 260 from that rough and landing it soft. How hard is that to understand?
Why are you so stuck on landing soft? Leishman has a 2 hybrid which can easily make the center of the green by rolling it up there. What's the landing soft all about? The guy had a great lie with the ball slightly above his feet. He can easily carry that club 245-250 and roll it up there. How hard is that to understand?

Perez just wimped out totally. 245 to the pin from the middle of the fairway. He was hitting his 3 hybrid at least that all day.

Why risk 2nd place money right? Perez and Leishman would probably fold pocket Aces in a 10 player sit-n-go because they don't want to go all in. That's obvious.

Stallings could have layed up. He went for it and won. Big difference.
You make me want to beat my head against the wall. Stallings was in the fairway. You do realize that right? Leishman was in the rough. I'm not sure how you can characterize that as a good lie at Torrey this past weekend. But hey what do I know. You are a couch legend who knows more than I. Holing out with a wedge had much better odds than going for it in two. Don't you think you would have seen more guys going for it if it were doable?

All he had to do was roll it up there!

You know that landing strip seven pieces wide next to that tiny pond, with a little right to left spin, and have it ride the slope a bit.

Here's something that one can learn from this thread:

If you find that PLHR and playa(aka mr smith) are siding with you, you should step back and re-think your position.

You're welcome

For the 3rd time, can we please move past the Leishman discussion (which is ridicuous), and talk about Pat Perez? That is a debate actually worth having. 245 out from the dead center of the fairway and he pulled a Zach Johnson. Did he have a bad lie? Divot?
Perhaps start a thread with PEREZ in the title rather than Leishman?

This guy is hitting the same club Leishman has. Titleist 712U Iron 250-268. Depending how you play it. Does anyone grip down .25 or .5 inches anymore?

LOL yes, some guy taking rips at it off short grass at a driving range is so comparable to hitting out of thick rough at a tiny landing area on the 72nd hole of a PGA tournament. At this point I'm surprised you haven't called Jordan Speith a chump for laying up off the tee - hole-in-one ties Stallings there, so gotta go for it, right?

His lie was garbage and if you watched his layup shot you wouldve seen how mushy and muddy that lie was. There is no way anyone on tour is pulling that shot off from 250 late in the chilly evening air. That pin was ripe for a wedge in and his odds were much better for a hole out than a 250 yard 3 wood.

Marc Leishman Career Earnings:$8,712,017.

He's down 2 and needs to eagle the 18th. He's 260 out decent lie in the rough after taking a drop. What does he do? He lays up and finishes with birdie. Cashes in $366,000.

Worst case scenario: He ducks it in the water, pitches up, and one putts for par. That pays $190,116.67.

Best case scenario: He hits the green or gets within chipping distance, makes the eagle, gains momentum, heads to a playoff and wins $1,098,000.00.

Good course management or bad course management? Champ or Chump?

I'm going for it. Thanks!

This, in part, is why Tiger Woods has 14 major championships.

The competition in this era does not know how to win.

Why?

And yet, apparently Scott Stallings knows how to win.

It's fascinating that you think that someone laying up from 260 in the rough when it's cold and not foolishly throwing it away by going for it is somehow indicative that people don't know how to win.

Tiger has 14 majors because he's shot lower scores than anyone else 14 times in major championships. If people these days didn't know how to win, then he would have won a whole lot more than 14. Similarly, if, for example, Doug Sanders could putt from 2 and a half feet, Jack would have only won 17. People have choked in majors for a long time and I suspect that they will continue to do so.
