How about dullness or loss of the original shine?  Concern?

That looks ok to me - just regular old chrome loss from going in and out of the bag.  I like to polish them up myself with a product called Wenol.  It's just a metal polishing paste but it works great and will bring back the shine.  The chrome is still gone of course and the metal will again get dull with time but there's nothing you can do about that other than replace the shafts.  I suppose a guy might wipe them with some thinned lacquer or poly after polishing but I haven't gone that far myself.

Well basically I do pull grips in this case. But getting a sense of feel on the range along with the visual may be ok. Hard to say

I've used Rust-Oleum Metallic Chrome Silver paint to touchup surface rust spots on shafts. Spray a pool into a cup, then dab it on with a brush.  Prevents further corrosion.  Then as above, shine with metal polish.  Happen to use Simichrome, but any good paste polish will work.  All this after a good rub with #0000 steel wool first.

Has anyone sent a borescope down a golf shaft and if yes what would be the telltale signs a shaft is weak?  Assuming it would be rusting?  Anything else to watch for?

I have a scar on my right hand with a nice story.

I took my now wife to a driving range to hit some balls. We weren't even dating at the time and not on great terms necessarily. I was supposed to leave the next day to go with a friend to work for a few months between college semesters. The place we were working was a few hours away. 

Anyway, I had a set of Nike Blades with X100s and was hitting the 4 iron. On one swing, the thing snaps underneath the grip on the downswing and the club goes out into the range. I start laughing as I've never seen anything like that before. I then realize my knuckle on my right hand is torn open and bleeding quite heavily. It was deep enough you can pretty easily see the bone.

What happened is the head of the club went into the ground and the shaft pointed upwards long enough that my hand still in motion hit the end of it. 

I got the thing stitched up, and still have a mishaped knuckle and scar. My tendon was partially cut but luckily not all the way through, that's why it still looks misshapen to this day. You can imagine, I wasn't able to go do my construction job after that, so stuck around town where my wife was. We hung out all summer and ended up getting married the next year. I kept the shaft, of course. It's partly responsible for the start of my family, lol.

OK, back to new acquisitions. I was in the neighborhood of two thrifts stores today and stopped by both. I almost skipped the second because its been dry for months now, but I'm glad I didn't. I came across some Tom Watson TW 805 persimmon. I wasn't all that excited at first, but the more I looked at this driver, the more I liked it. Its a really nice shaped head, good grain, a nice dark stain, a cool insert, and I think it will play well. Once home, I compared it to my other clubs and it is shaped a lot like my Palmer P31, which I crush. It also has a back weight port like a Louisville Golf or Cleveland. I don't think they were in the persimmon game long enough to make their own, so I assume someone made these for them. Whoever it was, they did a good job.

 

I don't remember this club from the 80s, which is odd because the pro I worked for was on Ram staff for a few years, and I would think I would have remembered this.  Every time I look at it, I like it a little more. The face is flawless, but the poly has some issues. I'm going to try the sand and dip approach and see if I can bring the shine back without a full refinish. Then I'm going to pound some balls and see how it swings.

Another set of Stan Thompson woods made their way to me,  this time an original condition set of early 1950’s.   Unfortunately the 2-wood is missing but still a very cool set.  I’ve never seen a set of Stan Thompson’s with the all-white insert.

Very nice!  Ram sure made some sweet equipment and those are excellent examples.  Does that say "Graphite" on the face of the insert?  I wonder what that is?

Ram TW805, awesome.  I'm a big fan of my TW805, like the graphite insert, and the stain color.  Good stuff.

More swingin' Stan's - very nice.  I'm really liking the Stan Thompson stylings.  They seemed to go out of their way to make things a little different than the status quo which is very cool.  The all white insert, the huge club-number stampings, the stylized top stamping...  all really neat.  Are these in line for a rebuild?  I'd love to see the results of that.

It does say “Graphite” on the insert. The decal has come off a bit on the driver, but it is completely intact on the 4 wood. Doing some reading today, it looks like the 800 had a red plastic insert and the 805 had a black graphite insert. It had an interesting weave that looks like carbon fiber.

Nope, these will stay original.   My philosophy is to save them if possible and refinish only if needed.  I will pull the sole plates and face inserts and reset them with new epoxy and probably give them a new coat of nitrocellulose clear lacquer to seal them, but I don’t want to lose any of the original patina.

I believe these are 1959-1960?

Tommy Armor FC4000 SS2. Shaft labels are gone but I’m guessing pro-pel 2 as to that’s what’s on the D.S.

 

Having been regripped these may be just right for throwing in the Jones bag for my walks to the local par 3 this spring

New to me but I believe these are 1963 FC4000s.  Another set I got these rather cheap and they may make for another set to bring out to the par 3 this spring.

 These are the coolest ferrules too!

That's a beautiful set in beautiful condition.  Those MacGregor crown ferrules are my favorite ever.  I wish someone would reproduce them.

Ha!  Yes... fetish might be the word.  😆   I'm the same way and just love the long colorful ferrules of the past.  When it comes to ferrules we can honestly say "they don't make em' like they used to" 

I wish I could find some appropriate colored plastic in rod form so I could turn my own.  I don't know how I'd go about making this crown style but I'd get it figured out somehow!

What I have to admire about those crown ferrules is that they absolutely nothing to enhance the performance of the club, but someone somewhere decided to go ahead and make them just because they looked fantastic.

 

And they did.

Indeed.  Like the tail fins on a '59 Cadillac or some nice pinstriping there is no real "need" for it but that artistic touch is what makes it stand out.

I met a nice guy at one second hand store a few years back, as we rummaged thru the rack together. chatty fellow.

I had gotten there first, so he asked me what I was holding and what was in the bin.

as we checked out together, he invited me to take a look at a set he had picked up earlier that morning at a church sale.

they had the same crown ferrules as your set, @coldwareragolfer.

first time I had seen anything like them.

As a golfer who chooses his clubs primarily for their looks (my ability level makes it pointless to choose for performance), I've long been a ferrule fan and MacGregor produced some of the best.  My clubs are mostly UK made and their ferrules can't compete with MacGregor's finest but there are some nice ones.

 

I can feel a new thread coming on; "Ferrule Art" 🙂

Seems rich to me.  Just what the heck would you do with it all?  Lots of interesting clubs, but I'm not sure how you actually make a profit from it all factoring in your time and overhead.  If he got a clean offer for $2000 I think he would be nuts not to take it.

Agreed!  He says in the listing that he started by selling some things piece by piece so that makes me think the collection has been picked over a bit.  I can't see the juice being worth the squeeze.  Who was the guy who had the massive haul on here years ago???  Did those pictures survive the website redo?

I agree. I was looking to see what he had, and while it's hard to work it all out, I reckoned $3,500 was on the high side. Didn't seem to have any rare drivers in there, which would bring up the price (though I fully acknowledge that my untrained eye may have missed some. I would like to get my hands on a Ping Eye2 7w, which I did see in there). Also with the irons, it was hard to see if they were full sets or not, and what sort of condition they were in. And if they were original or reproductions.

That lucky fellow was @Ironmaster Oddities and the stash in question was affectionately known as the Niles Hoard.  As for pictures, I may have seen one since the redo.  I will look.
