Stopped in a Dick's Sporting Goods to take my first look at the Ping G400 driver. As a long time Ping player quite impressed with look and setup. Below, are comparison pics of the G and G400 driver. I remember Frank Thomas saying sometime ago when 460 heads began to proliferate the marketplace that eventually companies would go to an optimum headsize of 440-445. Will be anxious to try the G400 this spring.

Took advantage of my 90 day credit and boldly traded the g400 back in towards a 917 d3. Had the 917 out for the first time a couple days ago and while it’s not quite the g400, it is very good. The g400 kills it in forgiveness but I was really impressed with what the D3 has to offer performance wise. To offset my Ping craving I found a G head, 9*, on eBay so I will pair that with the same 661 evo I had the g400 on and see what the differences are. If none (besides sound/feel) I may stick with the G, but I will also have no issue bringing the D3 back and snagging another G400 if the G doesn’t quite sit right with me. I think Ping hit a homerun with the head size and forgiveness of the 400, great tech in that driver.

after a fitting, I have an 8.5 degree lst g400 on the way with an aldila 2kxv green. Hopefully it works out good

Tell me more about this shaft PLEASE!

I've played the Tour Green, I had fond memories of the NV from 15+ years ago. What made you go with the 2KXV?

It just gave me the best numbers and I had a good smash and dispersion on trackman compared to the others shafts and drivers I hit.

I hit it and got good numbers when the g400 line first came out in the summer but wanted to wait until the fitter had more shafts. I didn't get back there until about a week and a half ago and got the exact numbers I did in the summer.

As far as feel , I generally don't have a the ability to tell a ton of difference in a lot of shafts. I usually just like a certain weight/balance. I play dgs300 in my irons which are tip stiff and butt soft. II think this one felt a touch smoother around the hands/mid section than the rogue silver I was playing before.

Ping is going to tell you to have your retailer order it for you. I had DD send me one and they didn’t even charge for shipping. Discount Dans = awesome customer service

Never thought id like the look of everything going on with the crown, the more it grew on me. Ive been wanting a smaller driver head, and this may fit the bill. Good to see so many positive reviews.

Initiallly, I had the exact same feeling. I strongly prefer the nice clean look of my 816 DBD. After some time w/the G400 though, I barely notice all the “noise”. I really like the smaller head size as well.

I joined the G400 club! High Five and secret handshake with the brethren! :drinks:

Compared to the G30 I've been playing the performance seems identical. I wasn't expecting otherwise to be honest and it's only been one round so we'll see if my opinion changes but doubt it. Main thing I notice is the smaller size and more muted sound. Head cover is a lot easier to get on and off than the G30 cover, which we all know is critically important!

It's all good as far as I'm concerned. Please don't ask me about launch monitor data and the like because I'm not into that sort of thing. Only thing I care about is hitting fairways and confidence standing over the ball (which means "ball fly far")

What shaft? Stick with the Rogue Silver?

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

As much as I loved this driver on great swings it was just far to hook happy to stay in the bag. I gave it every chance to hang around but in the end it just didn't compete in FIR with my M2.

Funny how a club performs differently for people. This is the most anti left driver I’ve used.

Cant imagine you are referring to the standard model. Are you speaking about the LST model? I’m guessing you are...

I had the same hook issues early on with my G400 (regular). The more I used it the better it got but still had the occasional left/hook. I haven't had maybe but 2 of those so far with my 917 D3. I am sacrificing a little feel and sound but being deep in the fairway or close to it has been a lot of fun. I would put the G400 back in the bag at any time though, awesome driver.

I thought the LST was a little fade biased?

On paper, I think some would assume it is fade biased in some sense: i.e. the lower spin.

But I don't think so. In my opinion, the lower spin (and less heel/toe strike forgiveness as a result) is what helps support a nasty hook (not the lead role, just a major supporting actor). I had the G30 standard and the G30 LST and I hit significantly (I mean that) more hooks than I ever hit with the standard version. I used both for FULL seasons and largely with the same shaft AD DI 7X. Playability on course and with miss hits were much different.

Spin is very often your friend with the driver. I think some guys get caught up thinking low spin is king. It only is when you make a perfect swing each time....which none of us (AMs) do.

Curious: Did you get trackman data on your G400 before you dumped it? And then compare that data to the 917?

I would be willing to guess that the G400 setup was too low spinning for you. I think that is why guys like the 917 line.....they tend to spin.

No trackman, just GC2 at my local Ruger Dunn... These were the only two drivers I have hit that gave me ball speeds in the 153 range.... Spin rates were close with the G400 being in the 2200-2400 range and the D3 being anywhere from 2300-2600. Not huge differences... D2 gave my higher spin rates. It basically is coming down to what I like to look at at this point and I have always preferred the Titleist drivers. These numbers were with different shafts so not apples to apples.

question (and maybe a dumb one)

are these heads coming in at 200gm from the factory and made for a counterbalanced shaft?

if you put a non counterbalanced shaft in a heavy head like that, would it not cause a whole slew of issues, like high weak fades or low and left misses?

meaning - the heavier head making the shaft play weaker than its suppose to?

maybe I have no idea what Im talking about here....

I tried the G400 LST today and liked it a lot, nice driver for sure

The bolt-on weight is replaceable so you can adjust head weight to whatever you desire. In the stock configuration the head a little heavy but that's a good thing because if you want to shorten the club or use a non counterbalanced shaft the heavy head works in your favor because you can get a nice swingweight.
