Taylormade P790 Irons

^^ 10 yard gaps are too small IMO and leave an awkwardly large gap on one side of the bag potentially. I want closer to 15 or so and maybe even 18 in my longer irons. 12-13 yards is ok for wedges in my book, because you need to be pretty precise.

Which is why very few tour players or accomplished amateur players will have a full set of these in the bag

And that's why I said "if the gapping (including carry and total distance) for the clubs is where the player wants it" in my post. And if you want to stretch out your longer clubs as much as 20 yards, hybrids are probably going to be in your bag - which it appears is the case for Z1ggy. (and which ties neatly into what gioguy was saying.)

My only point was that the loft difference doesn't tell the whole story.

for tour players or accomplished amateurs, there's a distinct chance they wouldn't be ordering a full set of these but just a few of the long irons. dont' quite see why you're harping on the loft gaps so much man. truth is, as a forged club (just as any forged club in the P700 series) -- you can bend them to your specs appropriately. you don't have to play them at stock.

And once you've bent them to your specs you've altered the bounce/offset/turf interaction. The loft matters because you'll see great players everywhere with a full set of ap2s because of appropriate gapping.

wait, are you getting the clubs for your proper gapping, or are you getting them b/c you HAVE TO HAVE specific bounce/offset/turf interaction? now you're changing from gapping to other factors for purchase/fit...

you're talking about two different arguments at the same time.

you'll also see those same great players with different irons at the top of the bag, hybos, other fairways, etc. See: jordan speith, justin thomas, bill haas, (should i keep going?)

Think about how you hit your irons. You are much more likely to change how far you hit a club in your short and mid irons by changing the force or "smoothness" of your swing. I don't know my good players who pull out a 3 Iron and really try to take a really easy swing as things like shot height and descent really come into play.

Think about it this way, someone who its a 3iron 220 on a "normal" swing may tone it down to hit 200, call it a 9% reduction. But that same person hits a 7 Iron 180, with the same swing can tone it done to 160, the same yardage decrease, but it is a 11% reduction. This tells me that you can cover more yardages in the shorter and mid irons and can thus spread your lofts out a little bit more. It's obviously all swing dependent and AoA of a short vs long iron plays a huge part.

AP's have appropriate gapping but 790's don't?

Let's see

AP's - 3 to 4 (3*), 4 to 5 (3*), 5 to 6 (3*), 6 to 7 (3*), 7 to 8 (4*), 8 to 9 (4*), 9 to PW (5*)

790's - 3 to 4 (2*), 4 to 5 (2.5*), 5 to 6 (3*), 6 to 7 (3.5*), 7 to 8 (4.5*), 8 to 9 (5*), 9 to PW (5*)

I guess I'm in the minority because if you only looked at the numbers it appears to me that there was more thought put into the gapping on the 790's than the AP's. Now that said, I am sure both companies gave good thought as to how the clubs should be properly gapped.

As why the gaps in the longer irons have slightly smaller gaps (and it is pretty slight when you look at it) I would guess that either the they were getting more jump on the long irons or they wanted to make them a bit more playable for the average guy or both.

I'm talking ap2's - I don't know what irons you're referencing. The gapping stuff on the distance iron is a mess with most manufacturers. But if someone wants to smoke their 6 iron then all good with me.

Fixed it for 718 AP2's in the quote above not much difference really from my original post

Those look great. When did you order them?

9/14/17

two expensive vices. You could always get rid of a guitar for more sticks.

True that...that Mesa Boogie Amp/cabinet stack alone is worth approx. $3000.

Yesterday when I put them in my cart (hehe, but I won't buy...) it was 5-PW with Nippon Modus3 120S, said shipping on 9/28. Lefty heads though so demand is much lower. I can't imagine spending $1000 on something then waiting weeks and weeks for it.

One of the only benefits for us lefties, haha.

TM website now says earliest shipping date for the heads is 11/15/2017. After having to send mine back because they had the wrong shafts, I'm worried I won't touch a P790 until winter...

Depends on the set your looking to get , if you do 3 or 4-pw it comes up ship date of 11/15 now if you only do 5-pw it comes up 9/28

A few have asked why I dont have a AW or 50 degree wedge. I custom ordered 3 Milled Grind wedges same shafts and they just haven't got to me yet.

50.09

56.10 (One degree strong to 55 degrees)

60.09

Out of curiosity, did you order the bronze/antique milled wedges? Enjoy the new irons, really like mine.

I did not I got the chrome as I get them stamped after I get them.

Thanks for the swift reply.
