The "You love/care about golf more than you do me" argument with spouse/significant other

I get the joking flack from mine... the whole "WOW... Golf again!!???!?!?!?"

 

"Uhhh babe, I played 1 week ago... -___- "

 

but part of me knows shes actually serious and just doesn't want to come off as controling. I suspect once the whole kids thing happen... I definitely won't be golfing anymore. I'll be lucky to play a few times a year.

 

I stopped playing from 94 to '13 - life took over and if I am honest I didn't mind. I only get the odd "what time will you be back" - and I ensure I ask the same when I get an opportunity, to level things up :)

I get this a lot. And it is probably true to an extend.

 

I try to spend as much time with her when I am not golfing.

 

I mean let's be honest, sometimes she doesn't think rationally. Sometimes no one does.

 

sometimes I'll come home from work and she will say she needs space so I go into my office, then when she goes to bed I walk in to say good night and she is upset because I didn't hang out with her. I can't win sometimes. Damned if I do damned if I don't.

 

But for me it's all a matter of perspective.

 

You can tell yourself. "wow, my wife is complaining like the queen of England"

 

Or you can tell yourself "I married the queen of effing England!!"

 

I try to just keep it positive and let her self sooth long enough to come in and tell her how great she is. And how much I love her.

I have two lovely ladies in my life, a wife and a live in girlfriend. I've been with my wife ten years, the gf 4. The wife saw me pick up the game, and the gf was there when I picked it back up so both of them expierienced the massive change in time and attention that gets devoted to them when this game gets its tools in me. Honestly, having two has surprisingly made it easier. Yes, there is a small amount of bickering when I make it plain that men's league is more important to me than an outing with her family, but one is always there to remind the other that all out is just how I do everything, words which, if said by me,or any man, would sound like juvenile excuse making, but coming from their own kind reminds them that I am a man of uncommon passion and intensity. A man who doesn't go with you to shop for a new bed frame, he builds you one and carves the words to your song into the wood. He doesn't listen to the drama going on with your friends, but he'll take you camping on your birthday and listen to the wind with you. Now, this life isn't for everyone, God knows when they gang up on you it's like being in a burlap sack with a badger, and actually doing the romantic gestures of that magnitude seems to most like too much bother, but it works for me.

 

When it doesnt, I just say, "golf never maxed out my credit card and wrecked my truck on the same day"

That's correct, I do. And "interesting" is not usually the word id use to describe it, lol. Sometimes, bliss is the word, sometimes, trial is the right one. ;)

Thankfully my wife is supportive of my golfing, it certainly doesn't hurt that I have a few days off during the week and I can get in a round on those days before she comes home from work.

 

That being said I think it is important to be understanding with each other. I love to golf but I also realize that it is important to have balance between golf and the other aspects of your life as well

Glad I'm not dealing with this any longer.......I had an ex gf that would get mad I'd spend my day off playing golf rather than with her.

 

Her way of getting back at me? Not responding to any of my calls or texts for days on end.......that silent treatment cuts much deeper than anything she could say or yell or scream at me!

 

That's the relationship that made me realize I can't marry a girl who doesn't accept golf as being a part of my life. Maybe that's why I'm not married yet lol.

My wife loves "conversation," and when she says "talk to me," it's like my mind goes totally blank. So one day back when we were still dating (should've taken it more seriously as a warning), we were eating dinner after I had been out to play 9 holes. "Talk to me," she says.

 

"What do you want to talk about?" I asked (dumb response, I know).

 

So she groans and asks me to tell her about my golf game. So as just about everyone else who plays golf can do, I started telling her the shot-by-shot (another dumb response, I know).

 

After a couple of holes of shot descriptions, she says, "I wish you could remember that much about our relationship and the things we do." Or something like that.

 

We've been married 5.5 years now, and the conversations haven't gotten better. :swoon2:

Early in our marriage we had some drop down drag out fights over golf... I was playing 3-4 times a week. As she found her group of friends and started running the resentment became less, she had her hobbies and I had mine. I ended up starting to skydive and this always worried her. New Years Eve 2016 she witnessed a guy terminal in about 80 yards away from where her and our friends were standing, no chute ... a Chinese lantern ceremony was going to begin when the last jumpers landed, hence the large group of people out to celebrate the last jumps of the year. This really affected her.... a couple weeks later while we were walking our dogs she told me " I will never complain about you golfing again if you stop jumping". I had already gone thru two surgeries, knee and shoulder... both caused by a bad landing and told her I was done. She now encourages me to play and practice. Life and relationships are crazy...

I have never had to deal with it. I have always been lucky with all of my girlfriends and now my fiancé. The only time I head a peep is when I refuse to attend a family function because of golf. My buddies always get crap from their wives/girlfriends over golf. We were just on a golf trip and were trying to plan a fall golf trip. 4 of the 8 guys said flat out my wife/girlfriend would never let me go. I personally could not live like that and would rather go through life single. That's just me though.
