So who's playing a 4-wood?

Taylormade R11 4 wood. This is my longest tenured club in the bag, and it does not appear to be going anywhere. Great fairway finder when my driver is misbehaving.

I picked up a 16.5* TMag AeroBurner with the stock stiff shaft and it is awesome. I struggle to hit my 15.5* off the deck but that one additional degree seems to make a big difference. Surprisingly, I don’t lose much distance. It’s still a toss up because I like my old 3 wood from the tee box on some of the shorter par 4’s I play regularly. I am planning to try an old school 17* Cleveland Launcher FW from 2012. Those have always had a cult like following and I want to see how the look-aid tastes.

I love golf

For years I played 13 & 17 Cleveland quadpros. Over time they just lost their pop. I think it was as the spin rates for balls came down they didn’t spin enough and didn’t fly like they used to. I have a Callaway x hot 4 wood now but it’s not in the bag because my x hot 2h does everything I’d get from the 4 wood better.

The Quadpros were hall of fame fairway woods. I gamed them for a good long stretch myself.

Best Fairways I ever had. I hit the 13 past my driver when I first got it. Did you ever play the quad pro driver? Good for a bomb every now and again but overall not a good golf club. It just didn’t have the pop of the fairways.

I'm fairly certain I've posted in here before but I'll post again... Playing M1 5 wood with the loft dialed down to a 4 wood or so loft. Also, M2 3HL is in the bag. I think the M1 5 dialed down launches lower than 3HL. Could be shaft could be weight placement, could just be swing or imagination but I think they're about the same length in distance overall. I'm not sure which one I'll leave in the bag but I will say both are ideal for my home course and are great both off the tee and into par 5 greens. The 3HL might hold greens better but it's got a higher launching shaft in it so that's why the apex height might be a touch higher and it holds greens a bit better but it's a very difficult choice between the two.

Am not at the moment, but in the past have dialed a 5w down to 17 degrees quite a bit. Very nice to have ~240 yards and a soft landing in the bag. And, for me, takes notably less swing maintenance than a 15 degree 3w. For the time being, I am compensating with a 16 degree 3w in the more forgiving variety. If I get to play more this summer, I may make a change.

Could never hit a 3w off the deck, despite having the speed and being a relatively high ball hitter. Switched to a 4w years ago and it's always held a solid spot in the bag. A well struck 3w off the tee for me would put me in the same areas I'd want to avoid with a driver- it's just too much distance.

The "old trusty" G15 is back in for now, selling my Rogue 4w to go back to something with a flatter lie angle. The next experiment is to bag a 18° Rogue SZ as the only wood and see if that has any promise.

Currently have a Fly Z+ 3/4 wood set to 16*. I don't hit it as high as I would like to, and the gapping between my 19* hybrid isn't as big as I would like it to be, so I just ordered a Bio Cell+ 5/7 wood head online and set it to 16.5* or 17.5*. Should increase my carry and make it easier to hit into longer holes and hold greens better.

I've got the flyz 5/7 wood set at 17 at the moment and it is the exact club you are describing you are hoping for with the biocell 5/7.

I too have that club, 5/7 set to 17*. The shaft is quite long for a 5/7 wood. I really liked this club because I couldn't elevate my previous 3 wood and wanted to try a 4 wood.

I just got a XR16 3 wood at 15* so i'll be changing my 5/7 to fit the gap between that club and my hybrid.

Got the Bio Cell+ to the range yesterday, and like the possibilities at 17.5* with my Elements Earth shaft in it. Surprisingly, the 18.5* setting is a possibility as well. Ball just takes off in either loft setting, and gets up in the air quickly. I like both ball flights for different reasons. I’ll get it on the simulator this weekend just to get a comparison of the differences between the two lofts.

EX10 Beta 16.5 at 42 1/4" and lead tapes to D3

I was a convert to 4W-oodish a few years ago from threads on here. Several brands, with several TEE 16.5 models.

For several years I was playing a G25 4 wood. Switched to the G400 SFT 16* last Fall. I sttill consider that a 4W or at least a 3 1/2 wood.

I stumbled upon an almost new TEE EX10 Beta 16.5 a couple of weeks ago (not common in Canada) with the Tour AD 50 Reg shaft. What a pretty club!!! It was hot off the face, but I didn't think it was the right shaft for me. I let a buddy use it yesterday and he bought it for basically what I paid sio he is happy, I'm happy.

Next club after my G SFT 3/4 wood is a G 7wood that I also acquired recently, played at the big minus,. Early days indicates it is a 7 wood that is a good gap progression after the "4W" for my swingspeed, (and pretty straight and high), instead of a 3H. Other 7 woods I tried in recent years were more a 4H replacement .

Updates:

I'd been trying my G400 SFT 16° at the small minus for a few rounds to try for a few extra yards. It was ok and straight but probably less carry in the real world (vs the range) where it counts. This thread reminded me that as a slow speed senior with a sometimes iffy back, elevation from a fairway wood, and confidence to elevate without feeling I need to overswing is a good thing. Plus the lie probably doesn't need to be as good at 16°. I'm putting it back to the stock setting.

In other news my buddy really likes the TEE EX 10 Beta 16.5 he acquired from me recently, though only course time are the few shots he tried with me. On the range, head to head with his older three wood it performed better, higher and longer, by eye and using a portable cheapo launch device.

Good to hear

I really liked my ex10 beta 16.5 the one round I played with it

My weekly league course is short enough that 18* xcg7 beta is all the length I need for an alternate tee shot club to driver

Will have an eye out for an 18* ex10 Beta 5 wood head...

Played for the first time this weekend with my new TEE EX10 beta 16.5. First shot at the range the night before I loved it right away. First two shots on the course were okay, great misses really. Third shot though was a 25 yard uphill 230 yard par 4. Made a more aggressive swing and hit it dead straight at the hole. Came up a few yards short in the bunker right in front of the green. Compared to the 3 wood I had previously it is just way more consistent and honestly goes nearly the same distance.I'm going to love this thing I think.
