G400 driver replacement in January

Am I the only one concerned about whether this is Ping's jump the shark moment? For years, they've said they won't do movable weight because there is too much of a compromise in the mass properties caused by the structures that are necessary to support the movable weight. I can't see how a weight track (regardless of design or material) can be more efficient (in terms of driving cg low and back, which has been Ping's theme) than a fixed structure.

I haven't seen conclusive pictures but a movable weight and a weight track are not the same thing.

Looks like just three positions have to be reinforced for the weight positions, as opposed to a full track.

Unseen, in the background, Fate was quietly slipping the lead into the boxing-glove.  P.G. Wodehouse

Ping burned me with the release of the G400 Max right after I bought the G400. They say the G400 Max will stay current, but now that the PXG 0811XF is the highest MOI driver on the market (and at a competitive price) they will have to move up the G410 Max release which will be a maxed out MOI driver with no weight track. I'm just guessing here but since I'm not buying a Ping driver for a few years, I won't have to worry about their new erratic release cycles.

Unless Ping forced you to buy a G400, they didn't burn you.

Mid March is release date I got from Edwin Watts.

I was in PGA Superstore last night, and the mgr stated he'd have the demo's on 1/21 and the line goes on sale on 2/7.

No LST model, same as everyone has said, they could not build one better than the current model. They even had the new bags out on the floor. He said the driver is very good, the staff enjoyed the performance. He said the weights were movable and removable by clicking them in and out, so should be interesting if he got that right, didn't sound right, but we shall see.

Says the crossover is 100% better looking, like a normal driving iron --and the 3 wood out-performed almost everything he has hit for fairways. Adjustability in the fairways/hybrids he also confirmed. Turbulators on driver looked larger than current model, and the butterfly/design is removed. Great stock options like Tensei, Smoke, etc no upcharge. Says that the Alta shaft is still stock and it looks great, all black with Red accents. Also said the headcover is actually a great design, it was hard to explain he says. We shall see, bags look better than last year in all the models I saw.

oh and he also said that the 455 profile on the driver pretty much looks like the 460 size. It's much larger so those that have the max, probably can't tell the difference between the max and the 410, which didn't surprise him.

It's not your fault but his info on LST is incorrect.

-LST is coming, they missed launch due to QC/conforming issues. Late Spring/summer most likely.

Same story they gave us for G400 LST. Starting to become unbelievable.

I asked about the irons because I play the i210 irons today, so I wanted to hear the comparison. His comments were that they were a "very clean look" similar to the 210 as far as clean lines and design a bit larger than that the i210 but more compact than the G400--exact words "somewhere in between" on size. He says they look very nice at address and offer some offset but not nearly as much as the G400, so he thought they'd appeal to a broader group of people. He said the lineup was really impressive.

Well, to be fair that means that they couldn't build one that's better. It's just the 'why' is a little different than one would think.

While moveable weights don't necessarily mean there's a weight track, if you have a weight track then the weights are moveable.

Yeah it was a dog act by Ping. I would’ve been furious if I bought a G400 just before the Max came out.

They should be releasing standard, LST, SFT and Max at the same time.

The Ping G410 is going to make a big splash. flat black and red are the color scheme. No Lst head in the drivers both heads are 455CC the std head will also have a new 8 way sleeve that has a flat setting the std G410 has 3 weight ports where you can move the weights from the toe and heel if you choose. The G410 Sft has a 14 gram weight near the heel. The 3 wood will come in a Lst option. The hybrid had a adjustable sleeve also.

FYI - There will be a LST head in the driver..

Ping should of stuck with 2 models. The max and LST. Having a regular and adding the max is a little confusing, especially with the timing of the release. And it doesn’t help that the max was a huge hit and overshadowed the regular G400. Maybe that’s why they are going with the 410 plus model (although I’ve read they plan on doing a max head later in the year).

And before anyone points out that the regular and max are 2 different heads, the max does everything the regular head does and better. If you wanted the smaller head you’re probably going with the LST head so the regular model fits in this no man’s land. At least that’s my take from testing the heads and what I’ve read on here about peoples preference.

Perhaps not, but a movable weight still requires some sort of structure to house it. So, for example, if there were three positions, you've got some sort of structure in those three positions that: (1) wouldn't be there if the weight was fixed; and, (2) isn't being used when the weight isn't there. Therefore, by definition, that weight is not as otherwise low and back as it could be.

I can't agree with this at all. There are valid reasons why the multiple lines worked. The max did not have the sound, feel, or looks that the regular 400 had. There was a market for each of the heads.

I see your point but I'm not as structural engineer so I really couldn't tell ya.

But I'm thinking Ping does have some structural engineers on their payroll; at the very least as consultants. :beruo:

Is this true? “PXG has the highest MOI driver on the market”? Higher that the 400 MAX? If so I have learned something today. I didn’t realize there was a higher MOI driver than the 400 MAX. Those in the know please comment.

I went thru a fitting and expected the lst to win out or the max but after testing the 3 heads with different lofts abd several shafts the regular g400 head gave the best numbers.

Imo ping having the various heads is a good thing. It offers something of every flavor for everyone and more options to get consumer dialed in on your product doesn’t hurt the brand.

While I wish they would release all the heads at the same time knowing they won’t release a specific version until it proves itself is something that’s missing from most brands that have yearly release and in many cases aren’t putting out anything that’s significantly better than the previous model

PXG stuff... look, it's premium, and everyone who has it is clearly a little better in the personal finances. But for me, I find it funny that in every long Ping thread, people have to jump in and try to justify their luxury brand purchase with the concept that it's somehow also technically an equivalent. Just go have your PXG threads in those threads. If you want to stray from the topics there, I suggest trophy hunting or silicone implants.

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.
