I am British but live in the US but hold no illusions of what is coming . But if they told the truth on the Golf Channel we would all get sick of hearing it , at least we can pretend it will be competitive.

 

You really think that? I'm not predicting anything, but the Euros look plenty strong to me. BTW, is this a course that the European Tour plays a regular event on?

 

Yep, the same course as the French Open venue, great course, super down the stretch, It's a pity that the great hole 18 will not be played that much. But I guess they have fiddled around with the course setup

As for the chances for the US team I'd say they are pretty good. A lot of Euros are a bit out of form, I guess there will be a Tigermania that will help the US team. And the atmosphere will have to be made by Irish and UK fellows. I know that the tickets are sold out, but I doubt that golf can create any kind of Coupe du Monde 98 feeling among the natives. I'll be surprised if there will be any kind of Hazeltine atmosphere there.

Their "coverage" so far consists of:

 

- Talking heads telling us all about Team USA's problems

- British guests smugly predicting European success (with no one even questioning them)

- Endless replays of Phil's bad drive at the 2004 Ryder Cup

 

Hey GC, Phil's done some good things at the RC too. He had a great singles match at Hazeltine. Why not show that?

 

If I had big money I'd start my own golf channel. And it wouldn't be like GolfChannel.

I don't think it would be the major factor but definitely a consideration. Phil has been spotted practicing with a Brdigestone over the last couple of days as an example of that. That would tend to suggest that there is a good prospect that he plays with Tiger or Bryson in foursomes.

 

Hadn't heard that. You are doing a good job of hiding your excitement at the prospect! Loved that Frank said yesterday the Euros would love to see a Phil/Tiger team.

 

I don't think Phil should be on the team, I wouldn't be surprised if he's doing everything he can to play with Tiger, and I think Furyk could very will be influenced to do it.

Would love for it to happen. They are both used to pressure but their last team outing was so horrifically bad that the pressure would be ramped up so much more. It would be a shocking decision if Fuyrk did go with that as a combo. In fact, Phil playing with anyone in foursomes is something that Europe would love to see.

But the way Spieth and Reed pair in Fourballs they have said that they are out there trying to beat each other and, as long as one is beating the other on every hole, they know they will go low. If there is animosity, I think that only ramps up their intensity to beat each other, so why not pair them?

 

They are one point way from joining the likes of Seve/Jose Maria, Faldo/Woosnam, Westwood/Clarke as the only duos to earn 6 points - it's nonsense.

Not sure if everyone is aware, but I didn't realize that in Foursomes they can actually switch balls every hole, so any talk of not being used to another player's ball is kind of nonsense. On a Par 3, you can always use your own ball and I'd assume on any driver hole they would use the ball that the second player will be hitting to the green. Sure, there could be some minor differences for feel around the green, but they can't be THAT different. Off the tee these guys could hit range balls and it wouldn't matter.

They could quite easily add a monthly offset on a sliding scale, to get a more realistic points total leading up to the event. I don't think anyone other than Phil & Furyk think Phil should be on the team.

He might not even play on Day 1. With Fourballs in the morning Friday, the US has to put out it's 4 strongest teams, and that doesn't include Phil in any way - and we all know he can't be put in Foursomes. Our Fouballs teams have to be some combo of:

 

Koepka/DJ

Tiger/Bryson

Reed/Spieth

Finau/Bubba???? Where else do you put these guys???

Phil was a "legacy" pick and I'm fine with it. He doesn't add anything to the team, but who else do we add that would have improved this team? Kyle Stanley for Foursomes, maybe, but that's it.
