This course really has me leaning towards a EURO win, looks to be a fairly tricky layout based on specific yardages and angles off the tee and into the greens. The have played an event on that course for years, have seen it in varied conditions. US players aren't exactly arriving red hot.

The only thing I've been saying over the past couple days is that the US needs to continue to learn from it's mistakes. One of those being Tiger Woods teeing off at the end on Sunday. My opinion is that Tiger needs to be one of the first couple off. If the guys who go off behind him see that he's doing well, it can be inspiring to the whole team. I haven't exactly gone back an analyzed it but if I remember correctly the last 3 or 4 times he's played, his match hasn't meant squat because the US was already behind and/or has lost already. That needs to change. I say the same with Phil, the need to go out in the beginning, not the end.

 

Great interview with Zinger by Shane Bacon on this subject:

- don't put Tiger out early as IF he loses it would give the Euros too much motivation

- don't waste him at 11 or 12 as they hardly ever influence the result

- he would put him at 8,9 or 10 as these are the spots which usually decide the cup

 

I suppose the first question to answer is do you expect Tiger to win.

Some aren't, but US players finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th and 7th in the last event.

I think the edge the Euros are being given in accuracy is vastly overrated. Stenson is #1 in driving accuracy, but he mostly hits 3 wood, so that's deceiving. Yes, the US has some inaccurante bombers, but the Euros aren't that much different. Rory is 165th, Rahm is 125th, Hatton is 101st, Fleetwood is 64th, Casey is 82nd etc. I don't see a huge advantage there for Europe.

Just got back today - was fun and actually enjoyed watching some of the celebrities (Condoleeza Rice and James Blake nearly hit 3-4 people out of the sand) but overall very disappointed in the organization of the event. Gates opened 20-25 minutes late due to security not being set up and then only had one security line for bag check. Layout not really conducive to fans getting close with many gates and roped off areas. Fans lining 5 deep for autographs at 18 caused a log jam lasting about an hour because there was only one way in and out across the 18th hole in that area - marshals and security had no clue how to control the crowd. Relatively small crowd compared to Augusta on Monday, or any of the practice rounds I've been to at the US Open or PGA - relatively quiet.

 

When do the practice rounds usually start in the morning? Will be there tomorrow.

The Euros average 63.4% FIRs and the USA 58.6%. That's about 2/3 FIR per round.

 

Euro SG Off The Tee average is 0.436, USA is 0.380

 

The USA has a much better average SG Putting stat. USA 0.254, Euro 0.055.

 

USA weakness is driving accuracy.

 

Euro weakness is putting with four players (Molinari, Stenson, Rahm, Garcia - 2017 since 2018 not available) having negative SG putting.

Colsaerts, Detry and Luiten aint exactly Billy Ho’s either. Now you good Belgian and Dutch forum members are free to rebuke me, but my impression of The low-land people I have met is not a happy, innocent lot but rather grave and strern ladies and gentlemen. Rather formal and strict in business meetings, and all the the crazy Dutch in Paris after the 1988 win in the European Cup, thats the only time when I have met low-land folks seemingly being happy without sarcasm.

No jealousy, like you said, Canada has noone to send anyway. Rory is my favorite player because his game reminds me of my own in that everytime you step on that 1st tee it's a crap shoot lol

Read some French online newsapapers, learned some French since I was in and out of France a lot back in the days, wanted to see the coverage of RC and it was not much. found this in Le Figaro.

 

Mais mardi et mercredi, les parties d’entraînement se sont déroulées dans une atmosphère assez policée. Les fans français, qui représentent 43 % du public, n’ont pas trop donné de la voix.

 

Either you understand or you can goo trans it, but anyhow this is kind of what you would expect. The euros will probably not get the fantastic support that the good people of Minnesota gave to the US squad two years ago.

Phil is Phun! As I recall he wasn't playing all that well prior to the last RC, but he pulled it together at Hazeltine.

 

If he has it going on, he could be a real lightning rod for the USA team. If he stinks it up in his first match, we won't see him again until Sunday Singles.

One way or the other he will likely be a lightning rod - he gets paired with Woods lightning is likely to strike Furyk. Sounds like a BD pairing more likely based on the above, but really, who else likely wants to play with him? May be interesting. Strangely, I could see Phil and Koepka a tough pair, but that doesn't seem to be setting up that way, and Koepka with about anyone else may be really, really tough.
