Irons that gave you the most enjoyment.

I dont need new clubs, but I want to buy some and I was thinking what the criteria for choosing them should be, and it has to be fun. This is pretty hard to quantify with lumps of metal, but i remember the first time I hit a set of Taylor Made R7 irons and the ball just jumped off of the club face, the sound was brilliant and I loved the clubs. Which clubs did you enjoy the most?

Just put a set of 900 Forged in the bag with ProjX LX 6.5s - WOW. Different class of ball flight. Crazy forgiving.

I have owned so many different sets of irons over the last 30 ears as I seem to remember something good about almost all of them. The one set is my current set and maybe it's because I'm much older now but I have pulled off some remarkable shots with my TM P790's. I have reached more par 5's in 2 with my long irons plus I'm using my long irons to sometimes Tee off on some tight and shorter par 4's. Of course there has been many other shots that come to mind with my mid to shorter irons as I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I put 800+ rounds on a set of Titleist DCI 990 irons from roughly 2001-2009 so obviously that's the most total enjoyment I'm ever going to get from a set. None of the irons I've owned before or since have stuck around for longer than 250-300 rounds (2-1/2 years).

The biggest "Wow" experience I've ever had was when I switched in 2011 from "players cavity-back" irons such as Razr X Forged and those DCI 990's to a set of Ping G20 irons. Being able to hit 10-15 really high, straight, long, solid iron shots in a round instead of maybe 3-4 times a round when I happened to make an unusually good swing was eye-opening.

I can't go back now, the "enjoyment per round" has been much higher with my Ping G-series irons (G20, then G30, now G) than with the smaller-headed, thinner-soled players clubs. Who knows, maybe I'll still be playing the G set in 2023 and blow through my old cumulative enjoyment record!

.... Amen. I had 210 to a back pin with a bunker guarding the entire front right half of the green. So not only did I need a long shot, I needed accuracy too. My P790 4 iron put me just on the back left fringe with a 15 foot birdie putt. That certainly gives me the most enjoyment. Combined with a very nice feel and a great look at address, I love these irons. So all things considered especially at age 65, P790's give me the most enjoyment.

... That said, I love playing my Honma 737's too. The feel is extraordinary, the sharp leading edge cutting out an effortless divot. But not as forgiving, especially in the long irons, the lack of forgiveness diminish my enjoyment. I also play Cobra Forged Tours that are a combination of the P790's and the 737's. While I doubt I could play the 737's all the time and be happy, I could easily play the Forged Tours. But until TM comes out with a new version of their P790's, they will continue to be the most enjoyable irons I have played.

Titleist 690mb with DG X-200 shafts were my favorite clubs. Played them for a long time but then got a job and had to quit practicing as much. Went to cavity backs (AP2) for a while and now back to a mixed set but with completely forged club heads.

Titleist TSr4, 9, Fujikura Ventus Black 6x

Titleist TSr3, 16.5,, Mitsubishi Chemical AV Raw Blue 75-TX

Callaway 2021 Apex UW, 21*, Kuro Kage XT 80TX

Titleist T100 4-PW, Dynamic Gold X100
Titleist SM9 52F, 56F, 60M, Dynamic Gold S400

Also Titleist 990's but now the PXG combo set is to die for!

To die for would be about right if I ever brought a set of those home and showed them to my wife!
