Does any fan really care who wins the Fedex Cup?

The FedEx Cup was created in part to make sure the big names in golf actually play a decent amount of tournaments, and you have to dangle enough money out there to make it worthwhile for the big names to go after.

Β

If you get rid of the FedEx Cup and the playoff system, you're gonna see the big names in golf play fewer tournaments, because there's nothing to chase at the end of the season. Perhaps with Tiger and Phil on the downhilll side of their careers its not as big of a deal as it was 10 years ago. But with the sponsorship money at the levels they are at and the purse levels as they are currently structured, the big names would play the majors and the tournaments that their sponsors obligate them to play in order to meet their commitments, and not much else.

Another year, another set of rules to determine the season-long champ. One less tournament too.... At least (I think) they got rid of the 2 winners (Tour Championship and Fedex) scenario.

As a long time golf fan, and muni player, I agree with this statement.

To be honest I'm only interested in the final round of the Tour Championship and the top 4 guys who can win it outright. So just like game 7's of the NBA, World Series etc that last day is what really matters.

I don't agree. The FedEx cup just changed what events they play.

The cup started in 2007. This is just one example, but Phil averaged 22.5 events prior to 2007 and 21.1 since 2007 including 24 last year.

Phil played 24 events last year because he was desperate to make the Ryder Cup team on points.

Thanks for reminding these goofballs why the FedEx cup was invented.....how quickly they forget. You virtually could not get the big name match ups and some was going over seas for the appearance money. Now we have golf eleven months a year and the complaints is mine blowing...Again, Justin Rose was the leading money winner last year with $18M after winning the FedEx Cup and is now saying that it is not good for golf.....really?! I'll believe that when he gives the money back...

In the US, matchplay does notoriously poorly in ratings and they just shrunk the number of events in the playoff. So, no I don't think it's going to play like the NCAA BB tournament, nor grow in anything but what the players are going to win, any time soon.

The FedEx cup does nothing to engage this viewer. I'll go so far as to say, it means NOTHING to the average viewer. It's a way for FedEx to promote their business to the TV viewer segment with a write-off.

Seriously though, I have no problems with the FedEx Cup, and I do like that they implemented. It is supposed to reward the most consistent player on Tour every year, and makes watching until the final tournament something to look forward to.

I'm just surprised to see someone jump so much in the standings after they do well in just one tournament though.

The FEC will never be seen on the level of a major, but it’s still entertaining. However, I don’t like messing up the major schedule just to accommodate the FEC. Get rid of the other playoff events or at least 1 or 2 of them, have the PGA the first weekend in August, and get the TC done the Sunday before NFL kicks off. And get golf out of the olympics.

I do not care who wins the FedEx Cup and the fact that the whole PGA Tour is presented as the "race to the FedEx" Cup is insulting. The 4 Majors are where the prestige is and they should not have to compress their schedule for the manufactured FedEx Cup which may be important to the winner but not many others. I admit to watching and enjoying the Tour Championship but the FedEx Cup is unimportant to me.
