it really is a shame that Titleist produced such a poor ball last time around that it got folks looking at the TM ball... Good for TM , but i tend to agree that the latest iteration of the prov1 and prov1x is the worst ball theyve made since the wound days. I scored a box of 15 V1x 2 weeks ago and put them back in play and the difference is night and day . The new ball is effected by the wind, spins too much off a wedge and a driver... Lets hope the new Titleist ball is a rework that puts it back on track. Ill be trying the TP5x when it hits ..But it will have to wow me to beat out The Bridgestone offerings that ive been playing since titleist tanked..

all that being said Im sure Rickie could get whatever V1x version he wanted , so maybe the TP5x is really good.. on the other hand i bet the pay to play it is really good too....

so, all this over a ball and a glove deal? Am I missing something? I guess I never knew what ball he played before, to be honest.

To be fair, that email wasn't a press release meant to spark interest to all of us. It was some kind of internal email it seems.

This is huge for TaylorMade to get someone of Rickie's pedigree to make the switch after playing Titleist his whole life. The performance of the new TP5x is no joke. I tested the new TP5x vs the ProV1x recently and the two balls weren't even comparable. TaylorMade truly is a ball company now and I'm sure he won't be the last to sign this type of deal.

but for how long ? they change balls so often .. will the TP5 line remain or will it be the "lethal speedzone " or similar next ?

You don't think internally at TaylorMade this isn't huge news? The email wasn't directed toward the general public. It was intended for employees/reps of TaylorMade.

I dunno I think it's a big deal since people tend to think about TaylorMade being an equipment company that also makes a golf ball. Titleist and the ProV line has long been in the bags of players who play a variety of clubs outside of the Titleist brand. This is rare that a non staffer for TM is going to switch to their ball.

It's pretty bad we've gotten to the point where no one believes anything anymore.

How do we know you're really Djuga06 and not Djuga05 posting under an alias?

Reminds me of an old Steven Wright joke about someone replacing everything in his apartment with an exact replica.

No matter how you slice it, the #11 player in the world switching ball companies is a big deal. It's a bigger deal when you consider he's a lifelong supporter of the most used brand in the game and is switching to a brand that's hungry for market share. And there's no way he's doing it for the money, so it's clearly a performance play. That should make everyone stop and think about it for a moment, at least.

It's also no secret here that the people who seem to think its a very big deal are guys with a lot of TM in their signatures, or judging by their other posts are big TM honks. Nothing against the ball. I played the TP5X for a while in its first iteration and its an outstanding ball. I've also no doubt he changed for performance reasons. But big deal? No.

With Fowler being the new "face" of the TP5, the ball will get a lot of instant credibility with the average golfer too. It's definitely a good and surprising get for TaylorMade. The TP5 has been gaining A LOT of momentum over the last 12 or so months around here. Sold as many of those as I did any other premium ball. This will only mean more sales and more demand.

Of course, many of us are fans, obviously. No denying it. But I test every new ball from the big five OEMs and play what works best for me. Prior to a few years ago, the signature had said Pro V1x for a LONG time.

I view this as a big deal because it goes against the common perception around here, and in the market, that Pro V1/V1x are just better. Look at all the free agent talk here over the past year. How many times have people stated that free agents would choose Pro V1/V1x if no money was involved? It's blindly accepted by most that the balls must be better, without any real discussion. So when a longtime loyalist switches away from that ball, I view it as news because it flies in the face of accepted truths and should force one to reconsider any preconceived notions they might have.

If someone like DJ or JDay switched from the TP5x to a Pro V1x, I can guarantee you that would be viewed as a huge deal. So why isn't the reverse treated the same?

Because this is one of the first instances of a non-TM player choosing to play their golf ball. It'll become a bigger deal if/when other players follow suit.

Because it would be promoted by Titleist of the continuing dominance of the #1 ball in golf (as they like to say). It wouldn't be treated the same because they are not in the same market position. I give TM credit for trying to grow position in the ball market. They may well succeed - I don't know. This is probably going to be seen as a bigger deal internally for TM than externally to the market. It will take a lot more signings (of hopefully more successful players wins-wise) to get them there, but Fowler is a recognizable face and likable personality so he doesn't hurt.
