Congratulations to Rickie Fowler a great comeback on a difficult golfing day . The demons must have been flying through his head . Great for him to pull out the win in front of his Grandfather and the rest of the family . I hope he bags a major this year too , he has been so close so many times .
Two wins in three weeks for the F9 driver. Just sayin.

I thought there was a new rule that if your ball moved without you causing it to move you get to replace it with no penalty? Why is it any different if it rolls into the water?

The water is irrelevant. If it had rolled into the hole, that would have counted, too (no strokes added ).

The penalty stroke was for getting it OUT of the water.

If you hit your ball onto a hill, and it stops for several seconds...and while you are in the way to your ball it decides to roll down to another spot...you play the ball from where it ends up. This is no different.

I think the reason this feels bad is because the ball was just placed after a penalty. I feel like since the ball moved without any interaction from Rickie, that relief was never actually taken. I am fine with this happening if the ball wasn't placed due to penalty right before. I guess from now on players can wait to place the ball until they are ready to hit...

Of course! But it’s always been this way. And certainly can’t be the first time this has happened.

If the ball is sitting in a precarious location that could go bad (no matter how it got there), it’s prudent to go and hit the ball. Under the new rules, if that location is in the geeen, you can just hurry to mark it.

It was a terrible break for sure but he only got screwed out of 1 stroke after all the melodrama. Announcers making it sound like the worst break ever in the history of golf is a bit over the top. I really hope it doesn’t affect the outcome though.

Agreed. Rule is good, break is bad.

haha rule is good... No

Just FYI. Anybody that has played at that level has had to place a ball on a lie that is dicey. Often times after trying different spots to actually get it to stay still.

I can’t tell you all how many times an official has said to me when I finally found a place to place it

“Okay, the ball is in play”. We all know (or should know) that if it rolls we have to deal with it

I had a few time when I hit it quickly for fear of it rolling again

I'm pretty sure that he's right. We do it all the time without thinking. Taking a drop pegs down, happy with drop, pegs up and balls in play.

The pegs don't have anything to do with ball being in play. Once ball is dropped (or placed) and it stays in appropriate location, it is in play.

Correct, which is why you will regularly hear the rules officials saying the "ball is now in play" well before any marker tees are picked up

Glad to see Rickie pull it off! Really impressed with how he keeps his mental and emotional composure even when things go wrong. That is a lesson I really need to learn myself.

The penalty was unfortunate but I get it. It does seem like making the ball in play only after the playe addresses it could lead to fairer outcomes in a situation like this without much downside, but the rules are the rules.

When I left the house earlier, Rickie was down by a stroke and I was afraid heading out of contention. What a great surprise when I just checked out the PGA website and see Rickie holding the trophy! Congratulations to a deserving young man who I greatly respect. I just wish I could have seen his fiance greet him on the green.

Dude! No kidding. I'm one of those guys who could care less except until the World Series, the Majors, the Super Bowl. The announcers (lots of talk about announcers lately) seem kinda snoozy too.

what's your point doesn't make it a good rule. Usga wants to simplify things and make things more common sense and this is the opposite. No fault of player for ball moving. Guy is on the green and the ball that sat there for 3 min then rolls in water. Sooo common sense simplified would be put the ball back where it was no penalty. If this was the last hole leader up 1 at let's say u.s open or if agusta had water on 18 and this happens and they lose buy 1 it would be a joke.

What a crazy final round. First Rickie makes par from the cart path and Kuchar 3 putts...and it felt like that was a huge turning point...then it looked like it was over after the birdie on ten. Then the adventure on 11.

And then nobody played well among the leaders except Grace. That final group was a combined 8 over par.

Rickie had some serious demons at this place. He should have won in 16. He hit driver through the green on 17 and into the water. I remember the shot - like the announcers said it looked good and Rickie didn’t even watch it land because it was right down the pipe. It hit on the downslope in front of the green and ran for 50+ yards straight into the water. He still had chances but that was just one of those golf God moments that you can’t explain. And then last year he played poorly on Sunday (but I think he scored better last year than he did today!)

Anyway. I’m really glad Rickie got the win here - he’s my favorite young player for sure.
