You missed the most important aspect of Spieth historical run; his putting. He putted his a** off to the umpteenth degree for a couple years. His strokes gained putting were unreal. Everyone knew it was not sustainable.

He's making alot of putts again. Hope he wins again soon.

Well he is putting his a** off again and someone needs to lead strokes gained putting.

Finished -2 today @ Bay Hill. Anyone who watched his round care to comment on how his game looked?

He did grind it out. Putted well, and got away with some (Word not allowed) shots, both off the tee and into the greens.

The driver is still the big question mark, IMHO. Still not consistent enough to be a threat.

But, no doubt he is making progress.

I'd agree with the guys that mention he grinded it out and got away with some good breaks. Over and above that though, I was relatively impressed. This isn't the type of course that I am, at this moment in time, looking at him doing very much on.

Things definitely seem to be getting better with his game and heading in the right direction but it's not like he is back to 100% and a course set up in the way that Bay Hill with thick rough, is not one that I can see him getting too much out of with him still seeming pre-disposed to the occasional wild wild drive. That he went round in -2 yesterday though was solid work and I am looking forward to see how he goes later today.

Simple fact is, JS has to hit fairways. Sacrifice a little distance and hit fairways.

I believe the biggest problem is he started to chase distance. That’s not his strong suit.
A lesson for us all. Play to your strength.

Today was a good day, 10/14 fairways.  He's definitely trending in the right direction, and he'll always be one of my favorites to watch; his ability to pull off shots (chip shot on the 18th today) is entertaining.

To me he looks like he's almost back. When he's on, he's still grinding from the rough and the occasional blowup hole. But with beautiful approach shots, long putts and a chip-in now and then.

With the competition as tough now vs 2015, I dont think spieth will be #1 again or winning a fed ex cup. But I still see him winning more majors and tourneys.

Why do you think the competition is better now? I doubt it

I have no stats to back it up. Just that in 2015-2016, the best players were DJ, Day, Reed, Stenson, Rose, Scott, Bubba, Rory, Furyk (im sure I'm missing a few).

These guys are still around today, but now we also have Koepka, Morikawa, Rahm, Shauffele, Thomas, Bryson etc at the top of their games.  And possibly even Old Tiger if he recovers.

Never been a fan but he has days, like today so far, that defy the golf gods. Through 5 holes he’s made a 19 foot putt, a hole in one, a ball in the water off the tee followed by a 31 foot par putt, a routine par five and then hole a 14 foot par putt.  Not exactly stellar golf. The phrase “Ben would be rolling over in his grave” comes to mind but he’s -3 through 5.  SMDH.

Maybe he’s been possessed by Seve”s ghost?

Hole out from the bunker for a birdie then another bomb on 10.  He is the Golden Child after all.  LOL.

I was going to say he can certainly be a threat, he's proven it with his consecutive 2nd place finishes.

What he's doing this week is more of the same. 64th out of 71 players off the tee combined with brilliant putting and iron play.

Watching the replay.   It’s a fluke I tell you.  A fluke.  Largest eye roll possible. 🙄

If he plays tomorrow like he did today what is the likely score? Today was -4.....so tomorrow is? 74? 76? A hole in one...a holed bunker shot....a handful(if you have big hands...otherwise it was more than a handful lol) of long putts.
Is that really sustainable good golf?

As an admitted Spieth fan, I want to be irritated by posts like these. It's as if people don't want to accept that making a lot of putts & having an otherworldly short game is not a skill like being a great ballstriker.

But then I think of Tom Weiskopf's quote many years ago about Mark Calcavecchia: "Guts & a putter will only take you so far" & I think maybe Shilgy's got a point...I guess time will tell. Maybe we've seen the best of Spieth at the beginning of his career or maybe he'll win another 3 majors or more before his career winds down. I will say I've never seen a player reach the highs he did, suffer through the slump he has & (apparently) come out the other side all before the age of 30.

I think the answer is around -4.   He putted well.  He’s known for doing that.  The hole in one was the only “ once in a blue moon “ thing.  Holing bunker shots and putts is literally what he does.

Yea but consider who that quote came from.  Tom came up short more often than not. And he was a great ballstriker. Me thinks guts  and a putter were what he was jealous of.  Right ?

Right.  Which is tied to nerve , thus mental game.   His putter was also hot garbage.

I love to watch him hit a ball.  Love it. Much like jack or hogan or Norman.  But he couldn’t putt to save his life.  And usually that’s tied to a mental block.   A deep self doubt. And guys often discount the things they are afraid of.  Or that they don’t posses.  It’s a coping mechanism to convince themselves to carry on , even with their shortcomings.

Yes, he is one of the tour”s best betters. But making 140 feet of putts plus two hole outs?

How many times does he have to do this before it’s recognized as “ he’s a great putter and has a great shortgame “

he doesn’t have to do this every round for that to be true.  We tout Rory as the greatest driver out there.  And I agree. He is. But he will host one OB sometimes.  Still finds water. Still misses  fairways.

I said he is one of the better putters on tour. Sometimes. For all the flash of the last few weeks he is 55th in SG putting this season. His putting is like what Phil”s short game used to be. It wows you but is not consistent.
And driving is a more reliable commodity. Making a handful of 30+ foot puts and bunker hole outs and hole in ones to shoot -4?
