What up with Jordan?

McCormick went on the telecast during the PGA last year and said:

”Jordan needs to be committed”

I’ve never heard a coach blame a player quite like that.

I assume there was more and some context is required. “Committed” could mean (in increasing order of throwing under the bus ranking):

1. Jordan needs to be committed to whatever they are working on.

2. Jordan needs to be committed to golf in general and needs to work harder.

3. Jordan must be involuntarily sent to a mental hospital.

Nice to see Jordan play well. He makes Butch Harmon look like a genius and Cameron McCormick look like a fool!

Except Butch only confirmed that what Jordan and Cameron were working on was the correct path.  Does that also make Butch a fool or Cameron a genius?

I’m rooting hard for Jordan, but I just don’t see his game can close the deal tomorrow. That 2 long bombs are hardly repeatable. He got couple of lucky bounces. And the last 2 wayward tee shots.

Just go out there tomorrow and be fearless. His game is trending up, and he doesn’t need one tournament to validate the results.

Golf is so much joy when Jordan is contending.

It’s amazing he is losing strokes off the tee and still leading.

SG: Approach is always more important that SG: Off the Tee.

Aron Oberholser pointed it out after the round.  There's a high correlation w/ SG:Off the Tee and winning this tournament.  Schauffele is middle of the field (that made the cut) while Spieth is #1.  It's funny, Oberholser implied that Xander is getting it done with smoke and mirrors this week, while the consensus from the Spieth haters here is that Jordan is, b/c of his performance off the tee.

How is the SG for this tournament calculated?  Is it only based on all the shots this week (i.e. sum up all categories for all players and you get zero)?  Or is it based on the historical tour averages (this course not as penal off the tee --> historical stats over-estimate the impact)?  Either way, isn't his rank more important?  I guess if it 56 out of 66 (players to make the cut) it's not so hot but as others have pointed out the absolute magnitude here is small compared to the other categories.

Regardless, his driver swing path is completely different from what it's been.  Seems to be slightly from the outside and hitting a little bleeder fade (vs. trying to sling it from the inside).  Amazing what this guy can do if he's not OB or in the trees (same as Phil from years ago).

I was thinking the same thing...long putts, a couple of fortuitous bounces. I will be curious to see how he handles tomorrow.

We all know how fickle the world rankings are.  He could win tomorow and next week and rise to 3rd or something.  That is if the voodoo algorithm lines up with the smoke from the chimney and of the ground hog sees its tail while brushing his teeth.  Good lord man.  Who knows how they rank these guys !!

It’s not that complicated.

I don’t know if he shoots 65 or 75, I’m just glad he’s in it. Should be fun to watch.

Being poor SG off the tee means nothing when you are 1st SG approach to green.

I dont understand the SG driving stats. How can he be “losing” strokes?  No tee balls in water, no OB. He was missing on the safe sides.

golf stats can be very deceiving.  Expect total score, only stat that really counts. The whole strokes gained concept to me has always felt a bit contrived.

18/42 fairways. He has only hit one tee ball in the water I believe but that’s more of a result of the course they’re playing. He has has 4+ balls over 50 yards offline this week that would have been in hazards or cost him strokes at other places.

But this isn’t other places so if it doesn’t hurt him how is he “losing shots”

there are lies, damned lies, and there are statistics.

Because instead of having 130 from the fairway which carries a certain scoring average he has 165 from the rough, desert, or the next hole over which has a higher scoring average from that location. This is also why his SG approach is so high. When he hits a great approach shot after a terrible drive he has lost SG off the tee and gained SG approach.

Exactly why stats can lie. He thrives off of that stuff.

You don't understand it, so it must be BS?  LOL

For three years people have been saying he’s got to eliminate the 2 way miss. For three rounds he has and he’s playing great golf. He’s playing a miss to take trouble out of play, but he’s “losing strokes”. All I’m saying is some stats don’t explain what is really going on.

so anyone who says he’s driving it poorly based on those stats IS using it incorrectly.

I completely understand it, that’s why I think it’s a very misleading stat.
